Abstract

Abstract We theoretically investigate the optomechanical interaction between an optical field and a mechanical mode mediated by a Kerr nonlinear medium inside an optical cavity and simultaneously driven by an external amplitude-modulated pump field and a probe field. We show that switching between bistability and multistability is influenced by the rocking parameter and Kerr nonlinearity. Further, we study the quantum fluctuation dynamics of the system, which shows the quantum coherence and interference effects resulting in the transmission of the probe field from opacity to amplification. We also find that the rocking parameter, Kerr nonlinearity, and the optomechanical coupling influence the transmission spectrum. In addition, we also show that the rocking parameter significantly enhances the optomechanical coupling, which can be a new handle to control the entanglement between the optical and mechanical modes. The results show that such a hybrid optomechanical system has potential application in designing and optimizing all-optical switching and optical sensors.

Controllable optical bistability and Fano line shape in a hybrid optomechanical system assisted by kerr medium: possibility of all optical switching

Aranya B. Bhattacherjee, Muhammad Sami Hasan

We theoretically analyse the optical and optomechanical nonlinearity present in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum dot(QD) coupled to an optomechanical cavity in the presence of a nonlinear Kerr medium, and show that this hybrid system can be used as an all optical switch. A high degree of control and tunability via the QD-cavity coupling strength, the Kerr and the optomechanical nonlinearity over the bistable behaviour shown by the mean intracavity optical field and the power transmission of the weak probe field can be achieved. The results obtained in this investigation has the potential to be used for designing efficient all-optical switch and high sensitive sensors for use in Telecom systems.

Controllable bistable optical switch and normal mode splitting in hybrid optomechanical semiconductor microcavity containing single quantum dot driven by amplitude modulated field

Vijay Bhatt, Sabur A. Barbhuiya, Pradip K. Jha +1 more

Abstract We theoretically explore optical bistability for the possible signature of all-optical switching and their performance in a hybrid quantum optomechanical system comprising of two semiconductor microcavities coupled optically. One of the cavity is driven by an external amplitude-modulated pump laser while the second cavity, which contains a quantum dot (QD), is indirectly driven by light transmitted from the first cavity and a transverse optical field. The generated bistable behavior due to optomechanical nonlinearity shows a typical optical switching behavior and it can be controlled by changing the laser power, QD cavity coupling, modulating amplitude/frequency and the optomechanical coupling. A clear signature of energy exchange between the mechanical and optical modes is visible from the mechanical displacement spectrum. These results suggest that the present system can be used in sensitive optical switches and optical sensors.

Optical bistability and absorption characteristic of an optomechanical system embedded with double quantum dot and nonlinear medium

Surabhi Yadav, Vijay Bhatt, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +2 more

Abstract Objective: This paper theoretically studies a hybrid optomechanical system embedded with two coupled quantum dots (CQDs) and a third-order Kerr nonlinear medium inside the cavity. The optical bistability and absorption spectrum are analyzed for the proposed system. Methods: From the Hamiltonian which describes the proposed system, a set of quantum Langevin equations are derived. Using these equations of motion, the steady-state mean field analysis is done which gives the phenomena of optical bistability. The performance of the optical switch is also analyzed in terms of gain and switching ratio. Further, the absorption spectrum of the system is derived and analyzed from the fluctuation dynamics. Results: The optical bistability has the potential to design tunable all-optical switches. The absorption spectra display peculiar characteristics of negative absorption (transparency dip). The transparency dips are found to be strongly dependent on the frequency of the mechanical resonator. The results of our investigation reveal that the proposed system can be used as an optical switch and has numerous other applications in quantum communication systems.

Bistable optical response of a three-cavity hybrid optomechanical system: effect of Kerr nonlinearity

Hamidreza Foroughi, Nader Daneshfar

In this study, we theoretically investigate the optical bistability (OB) in hybrid triple-cavity optomechanical systems (OMSs) composed of three coupled cavities (two optical cavities and one optomechanical cavity) in the presence of semiconductor quantum dot molecules and a Kerr medium with a Kerr coefficient of χ when the optomechanical cavity is driven by a pump laser with frequency ωp and the amplitude Ep, which results in optical pressure on the movable mirror of the OMS. The dynamical equations of motion for this triple-cavity hybrid system in the steady state limit are solved using the Heisenberg-Langevin equations to achieve OB. We have demonstrated that it is possible to adjust both the width of the hysteresis loop and the switching threshold by controlling the Kerr coefficient . t is found that by properly tuning the physical parameters, the bistable thresholds of the system can be switched on and switched off, which is useful for designing and optimizing sensitive all-optical switching .

Optical bistability and entanglement in two optically coupled cavities under the effect of a nonlinear medium

Surabhi Yadav, Vijay Bhatt, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee +1 more

We theoretically investigate optical bistability and entanglement in a hybrid nonlinear system of two coupled cavities via a single-mode waveguide. The left cavity contains an ensemble of N quantum dots (QDs) and a Kerr medium to enhance the nonlinearity as it causes to observe the bistable behaviour of the system. We study the Kerr medium, QD ensemble, and cavity coupling effect on bistability response shown by mean intracavity photons in the left cavity. In addition, we have shown entanglement between different subsystems and found that entanglement can be generated between the two coupled cavity photons, cavity photons, and QD ensembles. Additionally, we investigate the effect of different parameters on entanglement. Our findings show that Kerr nonlinearity and the hopping parameter between the two cavities can effectively control the optical properties of the proposed hybrid system, which can be used to design efficient optical devices and the entangled optical photons have applications such as quantum information transfer.

Optical switching and normal mode splitting in hybrid semiconductor microcavity containing quantum well and Kerr medium driven by amplitude-modulated field

Madhav Kumar Singh, Pradip K. Jha, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee

We theoretically investigate optical bistability/multistability for all optical switching signature in a hybrid semiconductor microcavity system comprising a quantum well and a Kerr nonlinear substrate. The system is essentially two optically coupled microcavities with one of the microcavity being driven by an external amplitude-modulated pump laser. We show that the switching between bistable and multistable behaviour is influenced by the modulated pump laser, Kerr nonlinearity and the optical coupling between the two microcavities. We further investigate the intracavity spectrum of quantum fluctuations which exhibit the well-known normal mode splitting (NMS). The NMS behaviour is also found to be influenced by the system parameters. These results demonstrate that the present hybrid nonlinear system can be used in designing sensitive optical devices.
