Far Resonance Kapitza-Dirac Diffraction: from Raman-Nath to Bragg and Multiple Beam Atomic Interferometer

Abstract

Abstract Near-resonant Kapitza–Dirac diffraction theory is extended out of familiar Raman–Nath approximation. New solutions with initial superposition of equidistant momentum states, applied to one- and two-optical grating atom interferometer schemes, reveals certain output patterns, usable as large-area multiple beam atom interferometer.

Raman - Nath approximation for diffraction of atoms in the laser field taking into account spontaneous emission of atoms for ground and high energy level

L Hovhannisayan, A. Zh. Muradyan

The problem of resonant Kapitza – Dirac diffraction is solved in Raman – Nath approximation out of familiar Bessel function approximation (applicable in zero and very large resonance detuning cases). It shows new and promising results for the atom optics and atom interferometry if the atomic momentum state has been prepared in a form of discrete Gaussian distribution. Namely, instead of monotonic broadening within the Bessel function approximation, our formula yields in splitting of initial distribution into two identical peaks, whith preserving form, which symmetrically move away from the distribution center for the interaction time. A table-shaped form for the ultimate momentum distribution also is in frame of new distributions. As to relaxation processes, they have only quantitative influence on the pattern of diffraction.

Tight binding approximation for a two-level atom Kapitza-Dirac diffraction

Lilit A. Hovhannisyan

We extend the study of Kapitza-Dirac diffraction in Raman-Nath regime removing the limitations put on resonance detuning. Discussing the case of extended Raman-Nath regime we develop an approximation for the case of strong standing waves which will correspond to the well known tight-binding approximation for periodic structures. Due to internal structure of the diffracting particles the system eigenvalues and eigenfunctions show important differences from the generally known cases.

Raman-Nath approximation for atom diffraction in the laser field of counterpropagating waves: instantaneous turn-on of interaction

Lilit A. Hovhannisyan, A. Zh. Muradyan

The problem of Kapitza-Dirac diffraction is solved in the Raman-Nath approximation without limitations on resonance detuning. A formula for the scattering amplitude in a definite integral form is obtained. It shows that in the case of initial superposition state of discrete Gaussian form the scattering spectrum has a new regularity, more usable for atomic optics.

Improvement of the Raman-Nath approximation for the resonant Kapitza-Dirac scattering

Lilit A. Hovhannisyan, A. Zh. Muradyan

On the basis of the well-known Raman-Nath approximation, we have obtained a new analytical form for the amplitude of the resonant Kapitza-Dirac scattering of an atom in the field of counter-propagating laser pulses. Comparison of the obtained formula with that in the Raman-Nath approximation shows that the former describes, in addition to coherent diffraction, also channeling of atoms in a periodic field of counter-propagating laser pulses.

Exchange force in the near-resonant Kapitza-Dirac effect

Georg Lenz, Paul H. Pax, Pierre Meystre

We study the influence of the quantum statistics of the incident atoms in the Raman-Nath regime of atomic diffraction by an optical standing wave. The diffraction pattern of fermions shows a clear signature of the ``exchange force'' between particles.

Laser Running Waves for the Kapitza–Dirac Diffraction in the Atom Interferometer

G. A. Muradyan, A. Zh. Muradyan

The scheme of multi-momentum atom interferometer based on the resonant Kapitza–Dirac diffraction is considered. The conclusion is made that the arms of counter propagating waves forming the standing wave, which scatters the atoms, should have the equal length.
