Autoresonant generation of solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates by modulation of the interaction strength

Abstract

The autoresonant approach to generation of solitary structures in Bose-Einstein condensates by chirped frequency space-time modulation of the interaction strength is proposed. Both a spatially periodic case and a finite-size trap are studied numerically within a Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Weakly nonlinear theory of the process is developed in the spatially periodic case using Whitham's averaged variational principle. The theory also describes the threshold phenomenon setting the lowest bound on the amplitude of modulations of the interaction strength for autoresonant excitation.

Nonlinear resonance phenomenon of one-dimensional Bose—Einstein condensate under periodic modulation

Wei Hua, Shixing Liu

We investigate the effect of an external periodic modulation on the one-dimensional (1D) Bose—Einstein condensate with harmonic trapping potential. By numerically solving the Gross—Pitaevskii equation with symplectic algorithm, the nonlinear resonance phenomenon is shown and the corresponding Fourier spectrum is given. The autoresonance phenomenon is also presented under almost periodic external modulation, and it shows that the condensate eventually evolves into quasi-periodic oscillation.

Autoresonant excitation of Bose-Einstein condensates

Serge Vasil'evich Batalov, A. G. Shagalov, L. Frièdland

Controlling the state of a Bose-Einstein condensate driven by a chirped frequency perturbation in a one-dimensional anharmonic trapping potential is discussed. By identifying four characteristic time scales in this chirped-driven problem, three dimensionless parameters P_{1,2,3} are defined describing the driving strength, the anharmonicity of the trapping potential, and the strength of the particles interaction, respectively. As the driving frequency passes the linear resonance in the problem, and depending on the location in the P_{1,2,3} parameter space, the system may exhibit two very different evolutions, i.e., the quantum energy ladder climbing (LC) and the classical autoresonance (AR). These regimes are analyzed both in theory and simulations with the emphasis on the effect of the interaction parameter P_{3}. In particular, the transition thresholds on the driving parameter P_{1} and their width in P_{1} in both the AR and LC regimes are discussed. Different driving protocols are also illustrated, showing efficient control of excitation and deexcitation of the condensate.

Evolution and controlled manipulation of a Bose-Einstein condensate chirped soliton in external potentials

Feng-De Zong, Yang Yang, Zhang Jie-Fang +1 more

An extended variational method for describing the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) chirped soliton in the presence of periodic and harmonic potentials is developed. It is shown that the BEC chirped soliton dynamics can be deduced via the extended variational method to a set of four coupled nonlinear differential equations. This deduced set of equations agrees remarkably well with full numerical simulations and highlights the dominant physical interactions in the system, namely amplitude, width, chirp, center-position, and center-frequency dynamics. The extended analytic theory provides a useful, accurate, and greatly simplified description of the governing BEC chirped soliton dynamics. It further gives the critical strength ratio of periodic to harmonic potential necessary to support multiple stable lattice sites for the BEC chirped soliton and demonstrates that the BEC chirped soliton can move selectively from one lattice site to another by simply manipulating the potentials. In addition, some interesting results for the experiments and applications of the BEC are also obtained.

Parametric and geometric resonances of collective oscillation modes in Bose–Einstein condensates

Ivana Vidanović, Hamid Al-Jibbouri, Antun Balaž +1 more

We analytically and numerically study nonlinear dynamics in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) induced either by a harmonic modulation of the interaction or by the geometry of the trapping potential. To analytically describe BEC dynamics, we use a perturbative expansion based on the Poincaré–Lindstedt analysis of a Gaussian variational ansatz, whereas in the numerical approach we use numerical solutions of both a variational system of equations and the full time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The harmonic modulation of the atomic s-wave scattering length of a BEC of 7 Li was achieved recently via Feshbach resonance, and such a modulation leads to a number of nonlinear effects, which we describe within our approach: mode coupling, higher harmonics generation and significant shifts in the frequencies of collective modes. In addition to the strength of atomic interactions, the geometry of the trapping potential is another key factor for the dynamics of the condensate, as well as for its collective modes. The asymmetry of the confining potential leads to important nonlinear effects, including resonances in the frequencies of collective modes of the condensate. We study in detail such geometric resonances and derive explicit analytic results for frequency shifts for the case of an axially symmetric condensate with two- and three-body interactions. Analytically obtained results are verified by extensive numerical simulations.

PARAMETRIC EXCITATION OF SOLITONS IN DIPOLAR BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

A. Benseghir, W. A. T. Wan Abdullah, Bakhram Umarov +1 more

In this paper, we study the response of a Bose–Einstein condensate with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with additional nonlinear term, corresponding to a nonlocal dipolar interactions. The mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to parametric excitation of the condensate due to periodically varying coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52 Cr , 164 Dy and 168 Er , where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions.

Generation of higher harmonics in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates trapped in periodically modulated potentials

Jayanta Bera, Abdul Q. Batin, Suranjana Ghosh +2 more

We consider a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with contact and long-range dipolar interactions, under the action of the time-periodic modulation applied to the harmonic-oscillator and optical-lattice trapping potentials. The modulation results in generation of a variety of harmonics in oscillations of the condensate's width and centre-of-mass coordinate. These include multiple and combinational harmonics, represented by sharp peaks in the system's spectra. Approximate analytical results are produced by the variational method, which are verified by systematic simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This article is part of the theme issue 'New trends in pattern formation and nonlinear dynamics of extended systems'.
