Abstract

We consider a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with contact and long-range dipolar interactions, under the action of the time-periodic modulation applied to the harmonic-oscillator and optical-lattice trapping potentials. The modulation results in generation of a variety of harmonics in oscillations of the condensate's width and centre-of-mass coordinate. These include multiple and combinational harmonics, represented by sharp peaks in the system's spectra. Approximate analytical results are produced by the variational method, which are verified by systematic simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This article is part of the theme issue 'New trends in pattern formation and nonlinear dynamics of extended systems'.

Generation of patterns and higher harmonics in 1D quantum droplets in tilted and driven quasi-periodic confinements

Maitri R. Pathak, Jayanta Bera, Utpal Roy +1 more

The generation of patterns by breaking the spatial symmetry in external confinement is a captivating area of physics. The emergence of patterns is a fundamental inquiry spanning various disciplines such as nonlinear optics, condensed matter physics, and fluid dynamics. The article investigates the generation of a variety of patterns in a one-dimensional binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensate forming quantum droplets. By solving the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the presence of tilted and driven engineered bi-chromatic optical lattices (BOL), the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of droplets under strong dc and ac fields are illustrated. Under the influence of a dc field, a stripe-like pattern emerges in the temporal domain, while the scenario with ac fields demonstrates temporal periodic and bi-periodic oscillations of density waves. The width and period of formed patterns are directly correlated with the strength of ac and dc fields. Moreover, temporal modulation of the BOL potential depth yields various harmonics in the oscillations of the condensate density pattern. Through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis, it is confirmed that these harmonics encompass multiple and combinational frequencies, suggesting potential applications in generating desired frequency combs within quantum droplets. We have also carried out a thorough numerical stability check of the obtained solutions and found them sufficiently stable.

Parametric and geometric resonances of collective oscillation modes in Bose–Einstein condensates

Ivana Vidanović, Hamid Al-Jibbouri, Antun Balaž +1 more

We analytically and numerically study nonlinear dynamics in Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) induced either by a harmonic modulation of the interaction or by the geometry of the trapping potential. To analytically describe BEC dynamics, we use a perturbative expansion based on the Poincaré–Lindstedt analysis of a Gaussian variational ansatz, whereas in the numerical approach we use numerical solutions of both a variational system of equations and the full time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The harmonic modulation of the atomic s-wave scattering length of a BEC of 7 Li was achieved recently via Feshbach resonance, and such a modulation leads to a number of nonlinear effects, which we describe within our approach: mode coupling, higher harmonics generation and significant shifts in the frequencies of collective modes. In addition to the strength of atomic interactions, the geometry of the trapping potential is another key factor for the dynamics of the condensate, as well as for its collective modes. The asymmetry of the confining potential leads to important nonlinear effects, including resonances in the frequencies of collective modes of the condensate. We study in detail such geometric resonances and derive explicit analytic results for frequency shifts for the case of an axially symmetric condensate with two- and three-body interactions. Analytically obtained results are verified by extensive numerical simulations.

Dynamical stability of dipolar condensate in a parametrically modulated one-dimensional optical lattice*

Ji-Li Ma, X. X. Li, Rui-Jin Cheng +2 more

We study the stabilization properties of dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate in a deep one-dimensional optical lattice with an additional external parametrically modulated harmonic trap potential. Through both analytical and numerical methods, we solve a dimensionless nonlocal nonlinear discrete Gross–Pitaevskii equation with both the short-range contact interaction and the long-range dipole–dipole interaction. It is shown that, the stability of dipolar condensate in modulated deep optical lattice can be controled by coupled effects of the contact interaction, the dipolar interaction and the external modulation. The system can be stabilized when the dipolar interaction, the contact interaction, the average strength of potential and the ratio of amplitude to frequency of the modulation satisfy a critical condition. In addition, the breather state, the diffused state and the attractive-interaction-induced-trapped state are predicted. The dipolar interaction and the external modulation of the lattice play important roles in stabilizing the condensate.

PARAMETRIC EXCITATION OF SOLITONS IN DIPOLAR BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

A. Benseghir, W. A. T. Wan Abdullah, Bakhram Umarov +1 more

In this paper, we study the response of a Bose–Einstein condensate with strong dipole–dipole atomic interactions to periodically varying perturbation. The dynamics is governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with additional nonlinear term, corresponding to a nonlocal dipolar interactions. The mathematical model, based on the variational approximation, has been developed and applied to parametric excitation of the condensate due to periodically varying coefficient of nonlocal nonlinearity. The model predicts the waveform of solitons in dipolar condensates and describes their small amplitude dynamics quite accurately. Theoretical predictions are verified by numerical simulations of the nonlocal Gross–Pitaevskii equation and good agreement between them is found. The results can lead to better understanding of the properties of ultra-cold quantum gases, such as 52 Cr , 164 Dy and 168 Er , where the long-range dipolar atomic interactions dominate the usual contact interactions.

Expansion of a Bose–Einstein condensate formed on a joint harmonic and one-dimensional optical-lattice potential

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We study the expansion of a Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in a combined optical-lattice and axially-symmetric harmonic potential using the numerical solution of the mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation. First, we consider the expansion of such a condensate under the action of the optical-lattice potential alone. In this case the result of numerical simulation for the axial and radial sizes during expansion is in agreement with two experiments by Morsch et al (2002 Phys. Rev. A 66 021601(R) and 2003 Laser Phys. 13 594). Finally, we consider the expansion under the action of the harmonic potential alone. In this case the oscillation, and the disappearance and revival of the resultant interference pattern is in agreement with the experiment by Müller et al ( 2003 J. Opt. B: Quantum Semiclass. Opt. 5 S38 ).

Dynamical instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate with higher-order interactions in an optical potential through a variational approach

Étienne Wamba, Subramaniyan Sabari, Kuppuswamy Porsezian +2 more

We investigate the dynamical instability of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with higher-order interactions immersed in an optical lattice with weak driving harmonic potential. For this, we compute both analytically and numerically a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation with higher-order nonlinearity and external potentials generated by magnetic and optical fields. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the ordinary differential equations for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbation. Through an effective potential, we obtain the modulational instability condition of BECs and discuss the effect of the higher-order interaction in the dynamics of the condensates in presence of optical potential. We perform direct numerical simulations to support our analytical results, and good agreement is found.
