Generation and characterization of ultrabroadband polarization–frequency hyperentangled photons

Hsuan‐Hao Lu, Muneer Alshowkan, Karthik V. Myilswamy +3 more

We generate ultrabroadband photon pairs entangled in both polarization and frequency bins through an all-waveguided Sagnac source covering the entire optical C- and L-bands (1530-1625 nm). We perform comprehensive characterization of high-fidelity states in multiple dense wavelength-division multiplexed channels, achieving full tomography of effective four-qubit systems. Additionally, leveraging the inherent high dimensionality of frequency encoding and our electro-optic measurement approach, we demonstrate the scalability of our system to higher dimensions, reconstructing states in a 36-dimensional Hilbert space consisting of two polarization qubits and two frequency-bin qutrits. Our findings hold potential significance for quantum networking, particularly dense coding and entanglement distillation in wavelength-multiplexed quantum networks.

Polarization–frequency hyperentangled photons: generation, characterization, and manipulation

Hsuan‐Hao Lu, Joseph M. Lukens, Karthik V. Myilswamy +4 more

Frequency-bin encoding is massively parallelizable and robust for optical fiber transmission. When coupled with an additional degree of freedom (DoF), the expansion of the Hilbert space allows for deterministic controlled operations between two DoFs within a single photon. Such capabilities, when combined with photonic hyperentanglement, are of great value for quantum communication protocols, including dense coding and single-copy entanglement distillation. In this talk, we present an all-fiber-coupled, ultrabroadband polarization–frequency hyperentangled source and conduct comprehensive quantum state tomography across multiple dense wavelength division multiplexing channels spanning the optical C+L-band (1530–1625 nm). In addition, we design and implement a high-fidelity controlled-NOT (cnot) operation between polarization and frequency DoFs by exploiting electro-optic phase modulation within a fiber Sagnac loop. Collectively, our hyperentangled source and two-qubit gate should unlock new opportunities for harnessing polarization–frequency resources in established telecommunication fiber networks for future quantum applications.

Stimulated emission tomography: beyond polarization

Mario Arnolfo Ciampini, Andrea Geraldi, Valeria Cimini +4 more

In this work, we demonstrate the use of stimulated emission tomography to characterize a hyperentangled state generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion in a cw-pumped source. In particular, we consider the generation of hyperentangled states consisting of photon pairs entangled in polarization and path. These results extend the capability of stimulated emission tomography beyond the polarization degree of freedom and demonstrate the use of this technique to study states in higher dimension Hilbert spaces.
