Abstract

Abstract Spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in optical micro-/nanofibers is studied theoretically and experimentally. Joint spectral intensity of the biphoton field generated via SFWM under excitation of femtosecond laser pulses is measured and calculated considering self-phase modulation of the pump pulses and SFWM throughout the tapered fibers. In comparison with the previous study (Shukhin et al 2020 Phys. Rev. A 101 053822), replacing picosecond pump by a femtosecond one with the same average power makes it possible to increase the photon pair generation rate tenfold.

Heralded single-photon and correlated-photon-pair generation via spontaneous four-wave mixing in tapered optical fibers

Anatoly Shukhin, Jameesh Keloth, K. Hakuta +1 more

We study the generation of frequency nondegenerate correlated photon pairs and heralded single photons via spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a series of identical micro- or nanofibers (MNFs). Joint spectral intensity of the biphoton field generated at wavelengths of about 880 and 1310 nm has been measured under excitation by 100-ps laser pulses demonstrating good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The measured zero-time second-order autocorrelation function was about 0.2 when the emission rate of the heralded photons was of 4 Hz. The MNF-based source perfectly matches standard single-mode fibers, which makes it compatible with the existing fiber communication networks. In addition, SFWM observation in a series of identical MNFs allows for increasing the generation rate of single photons via spatial multiplexing.

Studying joint spectral intensity of spontaneous four-wave mixing in optical nanofibers

Alevtina L Shmakova, Anatoly Shukhin, А. А. Калачев

Abstract Joint spectral intensity of the biphoton field generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in an optical nanofiber was studied both experimentally and theoretically. The measured two-photon frequency distribution agrees well with the theoretically expected one that is calculated taking into account the spatially inhomogeneous profile of the taper. It is shown that measuring joint spectral intensity of the biphoton field makes it possible to determine the nanofiber radius with high accuracy.

Photon-Pair Source Working in a Silicon-Based Detector using a Micro/Nanofiber

Jin-Hun Kim, Yong Sup Ihn, Heedeuk Shin +1 more

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the generation of near-IR correlated photon pairs via Spontaneous Four-Wave Mixing (SFWM) using a 13 cm-long MNF which has air-cladding waveguide structure with sub-micron diameter [1]. Since the dispersion property of optical fiber is heavily linked to its diameter, each wavelength of pair photon can be engineerable by tapering an optical fiber to the desired diameter satisfying the phase matching condition. Here, by using the tapered-MNF with 615 nm-diameter, signal and idler photons are generated at the wavelengths of 850 nm and 632 nm, respectively, in which Si-based single-photon detector has the high quantum efficiency (Q.E.) more than 50 % for both wavelengths.

A continuous-wave photon-pair source operating in L-band through spontaneous four-wave mixing in birefringent ZBLAN fiber

Taeho Woo, Kyungtaek Lee, Namwook Joe +1 more

A continuous-wave (CW) photon-pair source operating in the L-band was successfully realized based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) by using short length of a birefringent ZBLAN fiber. A type-III phase-matched SFWM process was utilized by pumping a birefringent ZBLAN fiber with pump photons polarized along the slow axis, where signal and idler photons were generated with polarizations aligned to the vertical axis of the birefringent ZBLAN fiber. The phase-matching curve was calculated, and the joint spectral intensity was analyzed under 1310 nm pumping conditions. Then, we experimentally generated signal and idler photons with center wavelengths of 1117 and 1578 nm using a 1310 nm CW laser as a pump light source and measured their quantum optical properties. The maximum coincidence-to-accidental ratio was calculated to be 22, resulting in a photon-pair brightness of 3.16 × 10 4 pairs/s/nm/mW. The results show the feasibility of using ZBLAN fibers in quantum optics as an efficient platform for generating a quantum light source.

We experimentally tailor the joint spectra of photon pairs produced via dual-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing, achieving a joint spectral intensity without side-lobes. This work presents a new route towards generating spectrally uncorrelated photon pairs.

All-fiber broadband photon pair generation in dispersion flattened highly non-linear fiber

Anadi Agnihotri, Pradeep Kumar Krishnamurthy

We report on a spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) based broadband correlated photon pair generation using a dispersion flattened highly-nonlinear fiber (DF-HNLF). The DF-HNLF is pumped by a stable mode-locked laser (MLL) which generates pump pulses of 250 ps FWHM at a repetition rate of 94.509 MHz. The joint spectral intensity (JSI) data indicates photon pair generation across entire S, C, and L bands. The intrinsic photon pair generation rate, after accounting for spontaneous Raman scattering (SpRS), system loss, and detector dark counts, is ≈ 100kHz although due to detection gating limit we measured the rate to be 1 kHz at peak pump power of 70 mW. The use of an arbitrary waveform generator for establishing pump MLL and gating of the single-photon detectors (SPDs) allows for precise synchronization of generation and detection of photon pairs.
