Heralding entangled optical photons from a microwave quantum processor

Trond Hjerpekjøn Haug, Anton Frisk Kockum, Raphaël Van Laer

Exploiting the strengths of different quantum hardware components may increase the capabilities of emerging quantum processors. Here we propose and analyze a quantum architecture that leverages the nonlocal connectivity of optics, along with the exquisite quantum control offered by superconducting microwave circuits, to produce entangled optical resource states. In contrast to previous proposals on optically distributing entanglement between superconducting microwave processors, we use squeezing between microwaves and optics to produce microwave-optical Bell pairs in a dual-rail encoding from a single microwave quantum processor. Moreover, the microwave quantum processor allows us to deterministically entangle microwave-optical Bell pairs into larger cluster states, from which entangled optical photons can be extracted through microwave measurements. Our scheme paves the way for small microwave quantum processors to create heralded entangled optical resource states for optical quantum computation, communication, and sensing using imperfect microwave-optics transducers. We expect that improved isolation of the superconducting processor from stray optical fields will allow the scheme to be demonstrated with currently available hardware. Frequency-multiplexed hybrid optical entangled source based on the Pockels effect

Alfredo Rueda

In the recent years important experimental advances in resonant electro-optic modulators as high-efficiency sources for coherent frequency combs and as devices for quantum information transfer have been realized, where strong optical and microwave mode coupling were achieved. These features suggest electro-optic-based devices as candidates for entangled optical frequency comb sources. In the present work, I study the generation of entangled optical frequency combs in millimeter-sized resonant electro-optic modulators. These devices profit from the experimentally proven advantages such as nearly constant optical free spectral ranges over several gigahertz, and high optical and microwave quality factors. The generation of frequency multiplexed quantum channels with spectral bandwidth in the MHz range for conservative parameter values paves the way towards novel uses in long-distance hybrid quantum networks, quantum key distribution, enhanced optical metrology, and quantum computing.

Multipartite high-dimensional entangled state generation through soliton-induced dynamical Casimir effect on a chip

Ali Eshaghian Dorche, Ali Adibi

An integrated photonic approach for complex quantum state generation through dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) is demonstrated. This approach provides a scheme to realize multipartite high-dimensional entangled states in the microwave (MW) and terahertz (THz) regimes, through the modulation in a MW-resonator coupled to an optical microresonator supporting temporal optical solitons. The states at the MW-resonator evolve from the ground state, realizing real-photons from the virtual photons at the ground state. The periodic modulation of the MW-resonator through a Kerr-induced refractive index change in the optical microresonator, along with the localized spatial distribution of the dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs), enables photon-pair generation and inter-mode coupling at the MW-resonator. This allows generating highly persistent multipartite high-dimensional entangled states in a wide range of spectrum. The proposed approach paves the way for a hybrid integrated platform for generation of multipartite entangled qudits (high-dimensional qubits) at the MW and THz regimes using highly coherent ultra-short optical pulses in a monolithic integrated platform. This architecture can act as an entangled state source, as a necessary resource for exploiting a wide range of quantum protocols from fault-tolerant computing to enhanced sensing and teleportation.
