Instability and momentum bifurcation of a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate in a shaken lattice with exotic dispersion

Abstract

The authors study BEC dynamics in a shaken optical lattice, where a BEC evolves from an unstable saddle point. Surprisingly, the condensate bifurcates into two solitonic clusters traveling along trajectories in momentum space under the influence of dispersion, potential, and interaction.

Instability and Momentum Bifurcation of molecular BEC in Exotic Dispersion with Shaken Lattice

Kaiyue Wang, Feng Xiong, Long Yun +2 more

We place a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate in a 1D shaken lattice with a Floquet-engineered dispersion, and observe the dynamics in both position and momentum space. At the initial condition of zero momentum, our engineered dispersion is inverted, and therefore unstable. We observe that the condensate is destabilized by the lattice shaking as expected, but rather than decaying incoherently or producing jets, as in other unstable condensates, under our conditions the condensate bifurcates into two portions in momentum space, with each portion subsequently following semi-classical trajectories that suffer minimal spreading in momentum space as they evolve. We can model the evolution with a Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which suggests the initial bifurcation is facilitate by a nearly linear "inverted V"-shaped dispersion at the zone center, while the lack of spreading in momentum space is facilitated by interactions, as in a soliton. We propose that this relatively clean bifurcation in momentum space has applications for counter-diabatic preparation of exotic ground states in many-body quantum simulation schemes.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of a Bose -Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

Uttam Shrestha

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in an optical lattice driven out of equilibrium and the subsequent dynamics are investigated in the limit of weak atom-atom interactions both within the classical mean-field approximation and by incorporating an approximate model for quantum fluctuations. A prediction of pulsating dynamical instability in which atoms periodically collect together and subsequently disperse back into the initial homogeneous state is made. This instability is a unique feature of this Hamiltonian system characterized by a single unstable mode and can be considered as a remnant of the integrability of the non-integrable system. A phase-space model has been employed to incorporate the quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. It is observed that the quasiperiodic behavior of the pulsating dynamics persists in the individual stochastic realizations that represent the typical experimental outcomes, but the effect of quantum fluctuations is manifested in the ensemble averages of various properties of the system. Quantum effects are increasingly prominent and the revivals of the ensemble averages of the wave function become progressively weaker when the effective interaction strength is increased. Motivated by these predictions, we apply similar methods to two-component BECs. Within the mean-field model we demonstrate a spontaneous emergence of a vector soliton like structure, a bound pair of a soliton and an anti-soliton, from the homogeneous imbalanced mixture of two BEC species. This is a feature that uniquely combines phase separation, pulsating instability, and formation of a dark-bright soliton pair when the parameters involved are tuned properly. ^

Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a horizontally vibrating shallow optical lattice

Alireza Valizadeh, Kh. Jahanbani, M. R. Kolahchi

We consider a solitonic solution of the self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional external potential of a shallow optical lattice with large periodicity when the lattice is horizontally shaken. We investigate the dynamics of the bright soliton through the properties of the fixed points. The special type of bifurcation results in a simple criterion for the stability of the fixed points depending only on the amplitude of the shaking lattice. Because of the similarity of the equations with those of an ac-driven Josephson junction, some results may find applications in other branches of physics.

Dynamical instability and dispersion management of an attractive condensate in an optical lattice

Giovanni Barontini, Michele Modugno

We investigate the stability of an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional lattice in the presence of radial confinement. We find that the system is dynamically unstable for low quasimomenta and becomes stable near the band edge, in a specular fashion with respect to the repulsive case. For low interactions the instability occurs via long-wavelength excitations that produce an oscillating density pattern in both real and momentum space instead of spoiling the condensate coherence. This behavior is illustrated by simulations for the expansion of the condensate in a moving lattice.

Pulsating and Persistent Vector Solitons in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Lattice upon Phase Separation Instability

Uttam Shrestha, Juha Javanainen, Janne Ruostekoski

We study numerically the outcome of the phase separation instability of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. When only one excitation mode is unstable a bound pair of bright and dark solitonlike structures periodically appears and disappears, whereas for more than one unstable mode a persistent soliton-antisoliton pair develops. The oscillating soliton represents a regime where the two-species condensate neither remains phase-separated nor is dynamically stable.

Dynamical instability of a two component Bose-Einstein Condensate in an optical lattice

Mehmet Emre Taşgın, Mehmet Özgür Oktel

We investigate the dynamical instability for a two component Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) in an optical lattice. We assume that the two components are in sinusoidal potentials with the same period but different phases. We find a swallow-tail type instability near the band edge, however an extra tail is formed due to the inter-component interaction. Depending on the phase difference of the potentials, the instability region may expand or shrink with increasing inter-component interaction.
