Humanity’s social, economic, and technological progress could not have been made without communications infrastructure. The need to attain the sophistication of long-distance communication has grown steadily since the dawn of civilization. The modern global communications system is the single greatest infrastructural project in human history. The global telecommunications grid which uses satellites, deep-sea fiber-optic systems, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microwave and other radio, and optical-frequency communications networks are tremendous in coverage, unparalleled in connection, and ubiquitous in application. As we approach the middle of the 21st century, this system’s next major update will incorporate quantum communications technology. Quantum communication, in tandem with quantum computing and quantum sensing, constitutes one of the three pillars of second-generation quantum technology and promises an array of novel applications. Considering the reliable transmission of quantum information often requires the transport of individual particles of light photons through a world inundated by trillions upon trillions of photons, quantum communication systems are an engineering marvel. To provide a technological alternative for existing public-key encryption protocols, which are now susceptible to the threat posed by future quantum computing systems, nascent commercial quantum communication networks aim to realize the potential for cryptographic security provided by the laws of quantum mechanics. However, a number of obstacles must be overcome before quantum communications can be widely adopted. This study focuses on the current state of quantum communication, the promise of its prospects in the near and far future, the obstacles it faces, and the breakthroughs and applications developed by the United Arab Emirates.

Over the last few years, we have witnessed an impressive growth of data traffic and a progressive Digital Transformation of Industry and Society: the deployment of the ultra-broadband and low latency network infrastructures (e.g., 5G) are leading to a global digitalization of several domains. These techno-economic trends are expected to continue and even accelerate in the next decade, at end of which, 6G and smart networks and services will be exploited. Innovation will continue to drive the global economy into the next decade. This paper draws some technology trends and applications scenarios for this horizon, where Quantum Optical Communications are likely to disrupt Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Telecommunications. Among the enabling technologies and solutions moving in this direction, this paper briefly addresses: quantum optical switching and computing, THz-to-optical conversions and advanced metamaterials for smart radio-optical programmable environments and Artificial Intelligence. The paper concludes with the description of a future application scenario, called Quantum Optical Twin, where the above Quantum Optical Communications technologies are exploited to provide services such as: ultra-massive scale communications for connected spaces and ambient intelligence, holographic telepresence, tactile Internet, new paradigms of brain computer interactions, innovative forms of communications.
Quantum communications represent a cutting-edge frontier in secure information exchange, with satellite networks emerging as a promising platform for their implementation. This paper provides an overview of the trends and challenges in leveraging quantum technologies for satellite communications networks. Beginning with a brief introduction to quantum communications and satellite networks, the paper delves into the fundamentals of quantum key distribution (QKD), teleportation, and entanglement, highlighting their relevance to satellite-based communication systems. The paper then explores recent advancements in quantum satellite communications, including the development and deployment of quantum satellites and the achievement of long-distance quantum communication via satellites. However, alongside these advancements come notable challenges. Technical hurdles such as atmospheric interference and signal degradation over long distances pose significant obstacles to the practical implementation of quantum communication in satellite networks. Moreover, practical challenges such as high development costs, regulatory complexities, and integration issues with existing infrastructure further complicate the adoption of quantum technologies in satellite communications. Looking ahead, the paper discusses future trends and opportunities in the field, including advancements in satellite technology, integration with 5G networks, and the expansion of quantum network applications. Despite the challenges, the potential benefits of quantum communications for satellite networks are substantial, offering unparalleled security and the ability to establish secure communication channels over vast distances. By addressing the identified challenges and leveraging emerging opportunities, quantum communications hold the promise of revolutionizing satellite networks and paving the way for a new era of secure and efficient global communication.
