A Short Introduction to Quantum Computing for Physicists

Oswaldo Zapata

These notes provide an introduction to standard topics on quantum computation and communication for those who already have a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics. The main target audience are professional physicists as well as advanced students of physics; however, engineers and computer scientists may also benefit from them.

Introduction to Quantum Information Processing

Eduardo R. Mucciolo

This book introduces quantum computing and quantum communications at the undergraduate level for students in the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics, assuming no prior knowledge of quantum mechanics. It is a self-contained guide assuming only that the reader is familiar with physics at the college level, calculus (up to and including ordinary differential equations), and some matrix algebra and complex numbers. The book brings the reader up to speed with fundamental concepts in quantum information processing and builds a working knowledge of basic quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, and quantum communication protocols. It covers various models of quantum computation and some of the most common physical realizations of qubits. There is a good number of practice problems and exercises that rely on computer programming with the Qiskit language. The book can be used to prepare students of physics, mathematics, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, optics and photonics, and mathematics for internships and research experiences in quantum information processing, both during and after their undergraduate studies. It also helps those who plan to apply to graduate school and do research in this area. Key Features: Self-contained coverage of quantum computing and quantum communications, from the motivations to the fundamentals and applications, including key concepts and contemporary topics. Contains practice problems and exercises, including some that require programming in Qiskit (the python-based, high-level language for programming quantum computers, adopted by nearly all quantum hardware providers and completely open source). Very light background knowledge assumed, making this book accessible to a variety of majors in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

An Introduction to Quantum Computing

Phillip Kaye, Raymond Laflamme, Michele Mosca

This concise, accessible text provides a thorough introduction to quantum computing - an exciting emergent field at the interface of the computer, engineering, mathematical and physical sciences. Aimed at advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in these disciplines, the text is technically detailed and is clearly illustrated throughout with diagrams and exercises. Some prior knowledge of linear algebra is assumed, including vector spaces and inner products. However, prior familiarity with topics such as tensor products and spectral decomposition is not required, as the necessary material is reviewed in the text.

An Introduction to Quantum Communication

Vinod K. Mishra

Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory for describing the microworld of photons, atoms, and their aggregates. It is behind much of the successes of modern technology. It has deep philosophical implications to the fundamental nature of material reality. A few decades ago, it was also realized that it is connected to the computer science and information theory. With this understanding were born the new disciplines of quantum computing and quantum communication. The current book introduces the very exciting area of quantum communication, which lies at the intersection of quantum mechanics, information theory, and atomic physics. The relevant concepts of these disciplines are explained, and their implication for the task of unbreakably secure communication is elucidated. The mathematical formulation of various approaches has been explained. An attempt has been made to keep the exposition self-contained. A senior undergraduate with good mathematics and physics background should be able to follow the current thinking about these issues after understanding the material presented in this book.

Quantum Computing: Principles, Algorithms, Technologies and Applications

Babu Chinta

Quantum Computing: Principles, Algorithms, Technologies and Applications provides a comprehensive introduction to the rapidly developing field of quantum computing. The book explains the fundamental principles of quantum information and connects quantum theory with algorithms, hardware, programming, security, and real-world applications. Beginning with the fundamentals of qubits, superposition, measurement, interference, and entanglement, the book gradually introduces the mathematical concepts required to understand quantum computation. It covers quantum gates and circuits, major quantum algorithms such as Grover’s algorithm, Quantum Fourier Transform, Quantum Phase Estimation, and Shor’s algorithm, along with their computational significance. The book also explores modern quantum computing technologies, including superconducting qubits, trapped ions, photonic systems, neutral atoms, semiconductor spin qubits, and quantum annealing. Readers are introduced to quantum programming and software concepts, quantum simulators, circuit compilation, hybrid quantum-classical computing, and practical quantum development workflows. A dedicated discussion of quantum error correction, fault-tolerant computing, quantum cryptography, quantum key distribution, and post-quantum cryptography explains how quantum technologies influence cybersecurity and secure communication. The book further examines applications of quantum computing in optimization, artificial intelligence, chemistry, drug discovery, finance, materials science, and other emerging areas. Designed for students, researchers, educators, engineers, and technology enthusiasts, this book provides a structured foundation for understanding both the theoretical principles and practical technologies of quantum computing. It also discusses current challenges, scalability, quantum advantage, and future directions toward fault-tolerant and large-scale quantum computing.
