An Introduction to Quantum Communication

Vinod K. Mishra

Published Jul 25, 2016• 10 citations
OpenAlex

Abstract

Quantum mechanics is the most successful theory for describing the microworld of photons, atoms, and their aggregates. It is behind much of the successes of modern technology. It has deep philosophical implications to the fundamental nature of material reality. A few decades ago, it was also realized that it is connected to the computer science and information theory. With this understanding were born the new disciplines of quantum computing and quantum communication. The current book introduces the very exciting area of quantum communication, which lies at the intersection of quantum mechanics, information theory, and atomic physics. The relevant concepts of these disciplines are explained, and their implication for the task of unbreakably secure communication is elucidated. The mathematical formulation of various approaches has been explained. An attempt has been made to keep the exposition self-contained. A senior undergraduate with good mathematics and physics background should be able to follow the current thinking about these issues after understanding the material presented in this book.

Quantum Technology: Unlocking the Nature of Physical Reality

Alamgir Khan, Jamil Khan, Khalilullah +2 more

This book provides a comprehensive and organized study of quantum technology, focusing on principles, mathematical foundations, and practical realizations of quantum teleportation and other processes in the field of quantum information. It starts with the basic principles of quantum mechanics (wave-particle duality, for instance) superposition and measurement theory all helping as the theoretical backbone of current quantum science. In addition to these basics, we provide a concise introduction and discussion of quantum energy or the quantization of energy levels, energy eigenstates and Planck’s constant, which determines what happens in microscopic systems allowing quantum theory an overlap with data from physical observables. Building on these principles, the book introduces quantum states and quantum entanglement, highlighting their non-classical correlations and their crucial role in facilitating quantum communication protocols. This book also discusses quantum gates and quantum circuits as the units of quantum computation and how quantum information is computed and manipulated by using controlled unitary operations. Also, it discusses the impact of both quantum decoherence and environmental noise which pose significant difficulties to coherent quantum systems and dependable information transmission. It discusses methods of error correction and coherence . This book further expanded to quantum cryptography and secure communications with more importance on protocols like quantum key distribution which make use of quantum principles to provide provable security. Quantum computing architectures and algorithms are also measured and various physical implementations and computational models that strive to produce scalable quantum processors are outlined. Problems and limitations of quantum teleportation are critically examined and these are, reliability issues, channel losses, scaling, and resource limitations. Lastly, the book ends by outlining the future of quantum technology, investigating the new technologies and opportunities, the possible advances, and the revolutionary use of quantum technologies in the fields of computation, communication and secure information processing.

Introduction to Quantum Information Processing

Eduardo R. Mucciolo

This book introduces quantum computing and quantum communications at the undergraduate level for students in the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics, assuming no prior knowledge of quantum mechanics. It is a self-contained guide assuming only that the reader is familiar with physics at the college level, calculus (up to and including ordinary differential equations), and some matrix algebra and complex numbers. The book brings the reader up to speed with fundamental concepts in quantum information processing and builds a working knowledge of basic quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, and quantum communication protocols. It covers various models of quantum computation and some of the most common physical realizations of qubits. There is a good number of practice problems and exercises that rely on computer programming with the Qiskit language. The book can be used to prepare students of physics, mathematics, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, optics and photonics, and mathematics for internships and research experiences in quantum information processing, both during and after their undergraduate studies. It also helps those who plan to apply to graduate school and do research in this area. Key Features: Self-contained coverage of quantum computing and quantum communications, from the motivations to the fundamentals and applications, including key concepts and contemporary topics. Contains practice problems and exercises, including some that require programming in Qiskit (the python-based, high-level language for programming quantum computers, adopted by nearly all quantum hardware providers and completely open source). Very light background knowledge assumed, making this book accessible to a variety of majors in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

Elements of Quantum Information Theory

Tudor D. Stanescu

We may be on the brink of a quantum transfor -mation driven by our increasing ability to realize, detect, control, and manipulate high-purity quantum states. For decades the quantum world has crept into our lives through modern information technology, the most visible side of science that permeates almost every aspect of our daily conduct. Yet quantumness in its full glory remains a promise for the future, as existing mainstream technologies are essentially based on properties of mixed quantum states realized in, e.g., metal–oxide–semiconductor heterostructures. The scientific backbone of current technologies combines quantum theory with information theory and the theory of computation, everything being sprinkled with a healthy dose of mathematics and brought into reality by remarkable engineering achievements. This multidisciplinary approach has enabled us to understand key physical phenomena and material properties, to communicate and process information efficiently, and, ultimately, to build functional devices that provide us with unprecedented convenience and mastery over nature, possibly with the price of being in danger to become the slaves of our computers and gadgets. However, our technological success is built on a combination of essentially distinct and largely independent scientific fields. Harnessing high-purity quantum states, on the other hand, sets these previously separated “continents of knowledge” on a collision path. The main goal of the last three chapters of this book is to provide a bird's eye view of the “collision zone” and prepare the reader to explore, enjoy, and perhaps exploit the newly raising mountains. We start with a brief introduction to basic concepts in quantum information, which also includes a summary of the operational formulation of quantum mechanics (the “natural” language of quantum information theory) and a synopsis of classical information theory ( Chapter 10 ). For a thorough treatment of concepts, problems, and techniques in quantum information theory the reader is referred to the books by Nielsen and Chuang [ 389 ] and Wilde [ 548 ]. The book by Watrous [ 530 ] focuses on the mathematical theory of quantum information. An undergraduate level introduction to this subject can be found, for example, in Schumacher and Westmoreland [ 458 ]. Some of the philosophical implications of the relationship between quantum mechanics and information theory are discussed in Timpson [ 505 ]. Our survey continues with Chapter 11 , where we discuss a few key aspects pertaining to quantum computation, which can be viewed as the quintessential quantum technology involving the controlled realization and manipulation of high-purity quantum states within a large Hilbert space. Finally, Chapter 12 focuses on topological quantum computation, a promising approach to overcoming the fundamental challenge associated with quantum decoherence based on harnessing the underlying robustness of topological quantum states. This also marks our final return to the realm of topological quantum matter.
