Abstract

Since its beginning, quantum computing has opened up a plethora of new perspectives and advantages., including its ability to exponentially accelerate computing processes. A large amount of research has been devoted to developing innovative methods for solving a variety of engineering problems by designing quantum versions of numerous mathematical processes. In this paper, we review the state of the art in these new techniques from the standpoint of quantum computer creation and efficiency enhancement, with an emphasis on the most widespread mathematical optimization techniques for engineering applications. It also emphasizes the obstacles and constraints associated with the use of quantum computing, as well as the major prospects for future contributions. This paper is providing a useful resource for engineering researchers who are likely to seek solutions from quantum computing.

A Brief Review on Mathematical Tools Applicable to Quantum Computing for Modelling and Optimization Problems in Engineering

Yousra Mahmoudi, Nadjet Zioui, Hacène Belbachir +2 more

Since its emergence, quantum computing has enabled a wide spectrum of new possibilities and advantages, including its efficiency in accelerating computational processes exponentially. This has directed much research towards completely novel ways of solving a wide variety of engineering problems, especially through describing quantum versions of many mathematical tools such as Fourier and Laplace transforms, differential equations, systems of linear equations, and optimization techniques, among others. Exploration and development in this direction will revolutionize the world of engineering. In this manuscript, we review the state of the art of these emerging techniques from the perspective of quantum computer development and performance optimization, with a focus on the most common mathematical tools that support engineering applications. This review focuses on the application of these mathematical tools to quantum computer development and performance improvement/optimization. It also identifies the challenges and limitations related to the exploitation of quantum computing and outlines the main opportunities for future contributions. This review aims at offering a valuable reference for researchers in fields of engineering that are likely to turn to quantum computing for solutions. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-01-020 Full Text: PDF

A Comprehensive Review of Metaheuristic Algorithms Inspired by Quantum Mechanics

Sunita S. Biswal, Dipak Ranjan Swain, Pravat Kumar Rout +2 more

This article comprehensively reviews the recently developed quantum mechanics-based optimization techniques. The quantum theory has been employed to speed up the evolutionary method and enhance the possibility of finding the optimal solution of conventional optimization techniques. Current developments in quantum computing have demonstrated that quantum theory can offer significant benefits over conventional theory for certain optimization techniques. The future prospective and benefits and drawbacks of this fresh category of quantum optimization techniques have been presented in this review. It also enables new researchers and algorithm developers to use these simple but extremely effective algorithms for problem-solving. This paper aims to give readers an overview of the fundamental elements and recent advances in optimization techniques so that they can develop and implement these for various applications. Finally, a few findings are reached, and future study on quantum-based optimization techniques is discussed.

Practical applications of Quantum Computing for Optimization Problems

Lorenzo Zuccari, Fabio Previtali, Emanuele D’Agostini

This study aims to evaluate the capabilities of state-of-the-art quantum computing applications, with a particular emphasis on their effectiveness in solving optimization problems. Specifically, it focuses on Quantum Annealing algorithms, examining their potential advantages and inherent limitations, reviews the capabilities of existing models, replicates proposed solutions for addressing NP-Hard problems, and systematically compares the results obtained with those produced by classical algorithms. Through this analysis, the study seeks to provide a rigorous assessment of the practical effectiveness of quantum annealing in optimization tasks and its viability as an alternative to classical computational methods in the near future.

Pragmatic quantum computing for science and engineering

Apostolos Syropoulos

Based on an idea by Richard Feynman, quantum computing is a relatively new technological innovation that promises to very quickly solve problems that one usually encounters in Science and Engineering (i.e., optimization and numerical problems). Currently, there are no full-blown quantum computers; nevertheless, researchers are working on quantum technology, if one is allowed. to say so, propose new ideas, solve old technological problems, implement new hardware design principles, etc., and all these Developments are quite encouraging for the future of quantum computing. Given these facts, it makes sense to propose the use of quantum technology for the solution of common and not-so-common problems encountered in Science and Technology today.
