Abstract

Since its emergence, quantum computing has enabled a wide spectrum of new possibilities and advantages, including its efficiency in accelerating computational processes exponentially. This has directed much research towards completely novel ways of solving a wide variety of engineering problems, especially through describing quantum versions of many mathematical tools such as Fourier and Laplace transforms, differential equations, systems of linear equations, and optimization techniques, among others. Exploration and development in this direction will revolutionize the world of engineering. In this manuscript, we review the state of the art of these emerging techniques from the perspective of quantum computer development and performance optimization, with a focus on the most common mathematical tools that support engineering applications. This review focuses on the application of these mathematical tools to quantum computer development and performance improvement/optimization. It also identifies the challenges and limitations related to the exploitation of quantum computing and outlines the main opportunities for future contributions. This review aims at offering a valuable reference for researchers in fields of engineering that are likely to turn to quantum computing for solutions. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-01-020 Full Text: PDF

Vikram Sehrawat

Quantum computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm with the potential to revolutionize computational tasks previously deemed intractable for classical computers. This paper explores the application of quantum computing algorithms in solving optimization problems, a cornerstone of numerous fields including logistics, finance, machine learning, and operations research. Quantum computers harness quantum mechanical phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to perform computations in ways fundamentally different from classical computers. This enables quantum algorithms to explore vast solution spaces simultaneously, offering potential exponential speedups over classical algorithms for certain optimization tasks. The abstract focuses on reviewing prominent quantum algorithms tailored for optimization, such as Grover's algorithm and quantum annealing approaches like those developed by D-Wave Systems. These algorithms target diverse optimization challenges including combinatorial optimization, portfolio optimization, and scheduling problems. We discuss their theoretical underpinnings, computational complexities, and practical implementations on current and near-term quantum hardware.

Exploring Quantum Computing for Solving Complex Engineering Problems

Raghav Agarwal

Quantum computing has emerged as a transformative paradigm, leveraging principles of quantum mechanics to tackle computationally intractable problems. This manuscript explores the potential of quantum computing for solving complex engineering problems—specifically optimization, simulation, and data analysis tasks—using technologies and methodologies available up to 2022. We examine both gate-based and quantum annealing approaches, outline experimental frameworks, and compare performance against classical counterparts. Results from simulated benchmark problems demonstrate promising speedups in select cases, though practical adoption is constrained by hardware limitations such as qubit coherence times and noise. The study concludes by highlighting avenues for integrating hybrid quantum-classical workflows in engineering, along with a discussion of current constraints and future directions. Over the past decade, research efforts have focused on understanding how quantum phenomena like superposition and entanglement can be harnessed to realize computational advantages for specific problem classes. In particular, combinatorial optimization problems—ubiquitous in engineering design and logistics—offer fertile ground for quantum algorithms such as the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) and quantum annealing. Additionally, quantum simulation techniques, including the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE), promise to accelerate the modeling of physical systems at the molecular and materials level, potentially informing the design of next-generation structural and functional materials. Beyond raw algorithmic performance, this paper carefully assesses the end‑to‑end workflow, accounting for overheads in problem encoding, error mitigation, and classical post‑processing. We also present a detailed analysis of resource utilization—quantified by qubit counts, circuit depths, and annealing schedules—highlighting trade‑offs between solution quality and execution time. Ultimately, our findings underscore that, while pure quantum speedups remain rare in 2022, hybrid approaches harnessing both quantum and classical resources can yield practical benefits for small‑to‑medium scale engineering tasks. This expanded evaluation provides a roadmap for researchers and practitioners interested in applying quantum computing to real‑world engineering challenges.
