Abstract

Numerical one-dimensional simulation of the superradiance phenomenon in a sample of a two-level medium with cw pumping under the conditions of resonant Bragg backscattering of counterpropagating waves has been performed. A range of parameters is determined in which a superradiant laser generating a chaotic sequence of ultrashort high-power pulses can be implemented, and the properties of these pulses are studied.

Superradiant Masers and Lasers with Distributed Feedback: Numeric Simulation and Optimization

N. S. Ginzburg, E. R. Kocharovskaya, A. S. Sergeyev

Superradiant operating mode in masers and lasers with distributed feedback is found. Namely, on the basis of two-level model of active medium in low-Q cavity, it is shown that chaotic series of utmost short powerful pulses of coherent radiation may be generated under CW pumping. The ways of achievement and properties of superradiant regime in various quantum microwave and optical oscillators are analyzed using numeric simulations.

Collective spontaneous emission in a distributed feedback laser with an inhomogeneously broadened active medium

Peculiarities of the implementation of a superradiant generation mode in a laser with a distributed feedback of the waves and an inhomogeneously broadened spectral line of the active medium are investigated. Based on a numerical solution of the semiclassical Maxwell-Bloch equations for the amplitudes of counterpropagating electromagnetic waves, polarization, and inversion of a two-level medium population, it is shown that a sequence of coherent high-power pulses is generated by the Bragg structure in a wide range of the laser parameters as a result of the selected mode and the cw pumping.

Photonic-crystal superradiant laser: effects of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening of an active medium

N. S. Ginzburg, E. R. Kocharovskaya, Alexander S. Sergeev +1 more

We investigate superradiant lasing in 1D photonic crystal taking into account both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in a two-level active medium. The latter may be based on, e.g., the quantum-well heterostructures and the fibers activated by color centers where Bragg structure can be fabricated artificially by means of a periodic modulation of the cladding layers. The truncated Maxwell-Bloch equations for the counter-propagating waves, the polarization and inversion of an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium are used to analyze numerically the interplay between the back-scattering, amplification, dispersion, and de-phasing of waves. It is found that, if the photonic band gap is less than the coherent amplification bandwidth, there is a wide range of the pumping and relaxation parameters of a two-level medium where superradiant lasing exists and results in generation of a quasi-periodic and/or chaotic series of powerful and short pulses similar to those of Dicke superfluorescence. It is the cavity mode selection due to distributed feedback caused by the resonant Bragg structure which is responsible for the existence of superradiant lasing. Typical parameters of superradiant photonic-crystal lasers, including lengths, photonic band gaps and relaxation rates, are indicated.

On the Asymmetric Generation of a Superradiant Laser with a Symmetric Low-Q Cavity

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vladimir A. Kukushkin, Sergey V. Tarasov +2 more

Abstract On the basis of numerical solution to the Maxwell–Bloch equations within the one-dimensional two-level model of a superradiant laser with a symmetric cavity in which the photon lifetime is less than the incoherent relaxation time of the optical-dipole oscillations of active centers, the phenomenon of the spontaneous asymmetric generation of counter-propagating waves under continuous uniform pumping of the active medium is revealed. It is shown that the observed symmetry breaking of the spatial profiles of counter-propagating waves of the electromagnetic field and, the polarization and inversion of the population of active-medium levels in the case of a small inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of its working transition occurs due to the asymmetric half-wave nonlinear grating of inversion of the energy-level population produced by these waves.

New light-matter phase: Asymmetric nonlinear self-consistent grating in a low-Q CW superradiant laser with symmetric Fabry-Perot cavity

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Alexey Mishin, E. R. Kocharovskaya +2 more

We carry out numerical modelling of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a CW superradiant lasing of a homogeneous two-level active medium in a symmetric low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity and find a remarkable phase transition. Namely, at a pumping level n > n ( a ) exceeding by several times the lasing threshold, n ( s ) , a stationary (or nonstationary multimode) lasing of more or less symmetric counter-propagating electromagnetic waves is replaced with a steady-state monochromatic (or weakly modulated) lasing of asymmetric counter-propagating waves with different amplitudes a + , a − . The spontaneous transition to a new field structure is accompanied by formation of a highly asymmetric strongly nonlinear half-wavelength grating of the self-consistent polarization and population inversion of active medium n z [1] , [2] . Many similar numerical runs with noise taking into account show that in a rather wide range of laser parameters the grating appears with equal probabilities 50:50 at one and the same distance from left or right ends of an active sample and has always one and the same asymmetric profile n z ( ζ ) with maximum at symmetric points with respect to the cavity center ζ = 0. As a rule, a formation of the steady-state grating takes a long transient period of time and includes generation of several superradiant pulses (see Fig. 1a ).
