Abstract

Superradiant operating mode in masers and lasers with distributed feedback is found. Namely, on the basis of two-level model of active medium in low-Q cavity, it is shown that chaotic series of utmost short powerful pulses of coherent radiation may be generated under CW pumping. The ways of achievement and properties of superradiant regime in various quantum microwave and optical oscillators are analyzed using numeric simulations.

Two-level model of a superradiant laser with distributed feedback

N. S. Ginzburg, E. R. Kocharovskaya, Alexander S. Sergeev

Numerical one-dimensional simulation of the superradiance phenomenon in a sample of a two-level medium with cw pumping under the conditions of resonant Bragg backscattering of counterpropagating waves has been performed. A range of parameters is determined in which a superradiant laser generating a chaotic sequence of ultrashort high-power pulses can be implemented, and the properties of these pulses are studied.

Photonic-crystal superradiant laser: effects of homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening of an active medium

N. S. Ginzburg, E. R. Kocharovskaya, Alexander S. Sergeev +1 more

We investigate superradiant lasing in 1D photonic crystal taking into account both homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening in a two-level active medium. The latter may be based on, e.g., the quantum-well heterostructures and the fibers activated by color centers where Bragg structure can be fabricated artificially by means of a periodic modulation of the cladding layers. The truncated Maxwell-Bloch equations for the counter-propagating waves, the polarization and inversion of an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium are used to analyze numerically the interplay between the back-scattering, amplification, dispersion, and de-phasing of waves. It is found that, if the photonic band gap is less than the coherent amplification bandwidth, there is a wide range of the pumping and relaxation parameters of a two-level medium where superradiant lasing exists and results in generation of a quasi-periodic and/or chaotic series of powerful and short pulses similar to those of Dicke superfluorescence. It is the cavity mode selection due to distributed feedback caused by the resonant Bragg structure which is responsible for the existence of superradiant lasing. Typical parameters of superradiant photonic-crystal lasers, including lengths, photonic band gaps and relaxation rates, are indicated.

Collective spontaneous emission in a distributed feedback laser with an inhomogeneously broadened active medium

E. R. Kocharovskaya, N. S. Ginzburg, Alexander S. Sergeev

Peculiarities of the implementation of a superradiant generation mode in a laser with a distributed feedback of the waves and an inhomogeneously broadened spectral line of the active medium are investigated. Based on a numerical solution of the semiclassical Maxwell-Bloch equations for the amplitudes of counterpropagating electromagnetic waves, polarization, and inversion of a two-level medium population, it is shown that a sequence of coherent high-power pulses is generated by the Bragg structure in a wide range of the laser parameters as a result of the selected mode and the cw pumping.

A superradiant two-level laser with intrinsic light force generated gain

Anna A. Bychek, Helmut Ritsch

Abstract The implementation of a superradiant laser as an active frequency standard is predicted to provide better short-term stability and robustness to thermal and mechanical fluctuations when compared to standard passive optical clocks. However, despite significant recent progress, the experimental realization of continuous wave superradiant lasing still remains an open challenge as it requires continuous loading, cooling, and pumping of active atoms within an optical resonator. Here we propose a new scenario for creating continuous gain by using optical forces acting on the states of a two-level atom via bichromatic coherent pumping of a cold atomic gas trapped inside a single-mode cavity. Analogous to atomic maser setups, tailored state-dependent forces are used to gather and concentrate excited-state atoms in regions of strong atom-cavity coupling while ground-state atoms are repelled. To facilitate numerical simulations of a sufficiently large atomic ensemble, we rely on a second-order cumulant expansion and describe the atomic motion in a semi-classical point-particle approximation subject to position-dependent light shifts which induce optical gradient forces along the cavity axis. We study minimal conditions on pump laser intensities and detunings required for collective superradiant emission. Balancing Doppler cooling and gain-induced heating we identify a parameter regime of a continuous narrow-band laser operation close to the bare atomic frequency.

On the Asymmetric Generation of a Superradiant Laser with a Symmetric Low-Q Cavity

Vl. V. Kocharovsky, Vladimir A. Kukushkin, Sergey V. Tarasov +2 more

Abstract On the basis of numerical solution to the Maxwell–Bloch equations within the one-dimensional two-level model of a superradiant laser with a symmetric cavity in which the photon lifetime is less than the incoherent relaxation time of the optical-dipole oscillations of active centers, the phenomenon of the spontaneous asymmetric generation of counter-propagating waves under continuous uniform pumping of the active medium is revealed. It is shown that the observed symmetry breaking of the spatial profiles of counter-propagating waves of the electromagnetic field and, the polarization and inversion of the population of active-medium levels in the case of a small inhomogeneous broadening of the spectral line of its working transition occurs due to the asymmetric half-wave nonlinear grating of inversion of the energy-level population produced by these waves.

Mechanism of Rabi-excitation of discrete modes outside the spectral line of a superradiant laser

E. R. Kocharovskaya, Vl. V. Kocharovsky

By means of numerical modeling of nonlinear and analytical solution of linearized Maxwell-Bloch equations, we find an intriguing regime of a superradiant laser with a symmetric low-Q Fabry-Perot cavity equipped with a distributed feedback of counter-propagating waves. We find that, in a wide range of parameters, there is lasing of a strongly-asymmetric self-modulated powerful polariton mode accompanied by excitation of several almost symmetric weak polariton or electromagnetic modes. The frequency of the powerful mode is approximately coincides with a center of the laser spectral line, and the frequencies of the weak modes are outside the spectral line of an active medium. We show that such a lasing takes place due to formation of a self-consistent inhomogeneous asymmetric grating of population inversion of active centers that provides undamped Rabi oscillations of the population inversion and dipole moments of centers. The grating makes the powerful ‘central’ mode strongly asymmetric, and the Rabi oscillations of active centers excite the weak ‘sideband’ modes due to the quadratic resonant nonlinearity of the two-level active medium.
