Photons are good candidates for carrying quantum information because they are very stable particles: they interact weakly with the medium and barely with each other. However, this has drawbacks when you want to process the information because, in this case, it is preferable to have photon-photon interactions. For example, for applications in quantum repeaters, such interactions would allow deterministic Bell state measurements, increasing the entanglement distribution rate between two remote nodes. Getting two photons to interact with each other efficiently requires mapping them into a nonlinear medium at the single-photon level, that is, a medium that reacts differently when it interacts with a single photon than when it does with two. Such strong nonlinearity has been demonstrated with Rydberg atoms, which are atoms excited to a state with a high principal quantum number. In this thesis we have performed nonlinear quantum optics experiments using an ensemble of cold Rydberg atoms, where we have studied the properties of the quantum light emitted by these atoms. First, we demonstrated nonlinearities at the single-photon level. To reach this stage, we made several improvements to the previous experimental setup available in the group, of which the implementation of a dipole trap was especially relevant. We evidence quantum nonlinearity by measuring photon antibunching for the transmitted light after interacting with the Rydberg state under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We also showed the generation of single photons on-demand after storing weak coherent states of light pulses as collective Rydberg excitations. Then, we studied the variation of the light statistic throughout the output pulse after propagating through the medium as Rydberg polaritons, which are superposition states of light and Rydberg excitations. We showed that the properties at the beginning and the end of the pulse were different from those of the steady state. In particular, the light detected after the input pulse was abruptly turned off gave much stronger suppression of two-photon events. Then, we investigated how to exploit this effect to generate single photons on demand. To do this, we analyzed the quality of the single photons detected at the end of the pulse as a function of the detection probability and compared the results with those obtained by storing the input pulse as collective Rydberg excitations. We showed that the photons were generated more efficiently when increasing the detection window at the cost of deteriorating the single photons statistics. Finally, we investigated the indistinguishability of the photons emitted by our Rydberg atomic ensemble, a crucial property for using Rydberg atoms as nodes in quantum networks. We also compared the single photons generated after storage under EIT conditions with those obtained using a two-photon Raman excitation to the Rydberg state. We measured the indistinguishability by making them interfere with weak coherent states of light in a Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment. And we showed that, although we obtained better photon statistics under EIT conditions, the indistinguishability from those obtained with Raman excitation was significantly higher. (English) Photons have emerged as the main candidates for carrying quantum information due to their weak interaction with the environment. Unfortunately, their limited interaction with one another poses challenges for photonic quantum information processing. One of the possible solutions lies in the unique behavior of interacting Rydberg excitations in cold atomic ensembles, where strong nonlinearities enable engineering interactions among individual photons. This phenomenon makes Rydberg ensembles a promising platform for quantum information applications, notably in long-distance quantum communication. This thesis presents a series of experiments that explore and exploit Rydberg-mediated interactions, all with the long-term objective of building an efficient quantum repeater. The thesis begins with a concise theory overview of Rydberg and ensemble physics. This is followed by an explanation of the experimental setup. I discuss how, building upon a previously existing setup, we improved the stability and spectral properties of our laser system, along with enhancing the quality of the atomic ensemble. The introductory section of the thesis concludes with a description of two different single-photon generation methods and an in-depth review of various decoherence mechanisms impacting Rydberg ensemble excitations. The single-photon generation performance has been improved by the modifications implemented in the setup, resulting in higher generation rates and better single-photon purity. Supported by experimental data and a careful analysis of experimental parameters, we identify the most probable sources of significant decoherence and suggest potential strategies for mitigation. In our initial experiment, we achieve the storage and subsequent retrieval of an on-demand single photon. This photon is generated through the collective excitation of Rydberg states in one cold atomic ensemble, and it is stored in a low-noise Raman quantum memory situated in another cold atomic ensemble. Our results show the capability to store and retrieve these single photons while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio of up to 26 and preserving strong antibunching characteristics. We also explore the built-in temporal beam splitting capabilities of the Raman memory and successfully use the memory to control the single photon waveshape. In the second experiment, we demonstrate for the first time an interaction and storage of single photons in a highly non-linear medium based on cold Rydberg atoms. We employ the DLCZ protocol in a cold atomic ensemble to create single photons, guiding them to another ensemble for storage in a highly excited Rydberg state under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. By studying the statistics of the light retrieved from the Rydberg atoms, we show for the first time single-photon filtering with non-classical input light. Moreover, through Monte Carlo simulation, we get an intuitive understanding of the effect of the (partial) Rydberg blockade upon the Fock state distribution of arbitrary input light pulses. This allows us to conclude that the response of the medium is determined by the input Fock state distribution, what confirms the established understanding of Rydberg ensemble nonlinearity. This demonstration can be seen as a step towards realization of deterministic photon-photon gates based on Rydberg ensembles with single photon inputs. The results presented in this thesis affirm the potential of Rydberg ensembles to become central elements of future quantum networks, both as single photon sources and processing nodes. Furthermore, auxiliary outcomes provide an additional understanding of the Rydberg ensemble physics and offer insight into limitations that we need to overcome to improve further our setup.
Nonlinear optics at the single-photon level enables deterministic photonphoton interaction, a long-standing goal in quantum photonics science. Besides its implication in fundamental aspects of physics, this would unlock several applications in quantum information science. A relevant example are deterministic Bell state measurements, which find a prominent application in long-distance quantum communications using quantum repeater architecture. Toward this goal, we built a highly nonlinear system based on Rydberg excited states of a cold atomic ensemble and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Our work first focuses on the storage of weak coherent light pulses in the atomic ensemble analysing the resulting nonlinear response of the medium. Then we demonstrate storage and retrieval of a paired single photon by coupling the Rydberg ensemble with a second remote cold atomic based quantum memory. Our set-up is based on magneto-optically trapped 87Rb atoms cooled down to temperature of 50 to 100 μK, with a cloud density of 10 ^(10) cm^(-3). Using EIT, light pulses are slowed down, stored as Rydberg collective atomic excitation and retrieved. We characterize EIT, slow-light and light-storage on a variety of Rydberg states, from the 26S up to the 80S. Depending on the state, the typical storage efficiency observed is of the order of few percents at a storage time of ~200 ns while the typical 1/e coherence time is of ~2us. By studying the optical response at different mean probe photon number, we have examined the Rydberg induced nonlinearity in EIT, slow-light and stored-light case for different Rydberg states. In particular, we have measured the nonlinear Rydberg induced dephasing of a stored collective Rydiberg state. For few microseconds storage time we have measured nonlinear response at the order of tens of photons. Our results show that light-storage enhances the nonlinear response of the atomic ensemble when compared to the slow light case, this possibly facilitating photonic quantum information processing using Rydberg excited atoms. Finally, we have used a separated cold atomic quantum memory to generate pair of correlated single photons. One photon of the pair is stored as single collective Rydberg atomic excitation and we show that non-classical correlations between the two photons and the single-photon statistic persist after the retrieval from the Rydberg ensemble. This result marks an important step towards deterministic photon-photon interactions. At the same time, linking a quantum memory with a highly nonlinear system may enable deterministic distribution of entanglement over long-distance using quantum repeaters.
(English) The rapid advancement of quantum technologies is currently pushing the boundaries of scientific and technological innovation. Among the various platforms for translating quantum theory into practical applications, photons have emerged as particularly strong contenders. Their inherent advantages, such as low decoherence and swift propagation, make them ideal carriers of quantum information for communication, computation and sensing purposes. However, the efficient manipulation and control of photonic quantum states presents significant challenges, often requiring the use of interfaces. In this Thesis, we investigate several novel approaches to engineer and control the properties of light using a very traditional system: trapped neutral atoms in free space. In Chapter 2, we introduce a novel method to observe and manipulate strong quantum interference effects between a few photons and a single free-space atom. The approach uses a Maltese-cross configuration, where two perpendicular pump and probe coherent fields drive the atom. Even for a weak atom-light coupling, we demonstrate that adjusting the relative pump-probe strength ratio and phase can simulate an artificially enhanced coupling efficiency for specific observables. In particular, we are able to engineer photon correlations from fully anti-bunched to extremely bunched states, and control the linear transmission properties in specific directions. In Chapter 3, we propose the combination of ordered atomic arrays and Rydberg Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) as a promising platform for quantum nonlinear optics. The spatial periodicity of the array enables precise control over photon scattering, reducing the inherent dissipation associated with traditional Rydberg EIT protocols. Using a two dimensional array, we design and characterize a single photon switch, where the storage of a single photon as a Rydberg excitation results in a strong change in the system's optical response. This switch can be used to implement a photon-photon gate with an error scaling with the Rydberg blockade radius as Rb^{-4}, potentially reaching gate efficiencies of up to 99% for realistic experimental parameters. Additionally, we model the optical properties of the array in the strong driving regime, where the system is multiply excited. In Chapter 4, we discuss a recent experiment that observed features of the Driven-dissipative Dicke phase transition in a driven elongated cloud in free space. This is unexpected, as the Dicke model typically involves an ensemble coupling identically to a single, lossy photonic mode, akin to an ensemble coupled to a cavity. Instead, a free-space ensemble interacts with a continuum of modes, encoding propagation effects. Solving a simple model to explain this behavior, based on the one-dimensional Maxwell-Bloch equations, we observe nonanalytic behavior in certain observables. However, a closer analysis reveals a significant spatial inhomogeneity in atomic properties. We thus argue that the free-space system does not undergo a phase transition but rather a “phase separation,” roughly speaking, between saturated and unsaturated regions. Beyond understanding the phase transition, we also elucidate under which conditions some properties of atoms in cavities can be mapped to atoms in free space. Together, the results in this Thesis represent a meaningful contribution towards better understanding phenomena associated to atom-light interactions in free space, and towards translating that knowledge into practical useful implementations. (English) Cold atom platforms have become central to quantum technologies such as information processing, simulation, and metrology. Their versatility and high degree of control make them especially powerful. A key breakthrough in the field was the ability to trap individual atoms using light. Far-off-resonant optical dipole traps—like optical tweezers and lattices—enable precise positioning of atoms in diverse geometries, from simple 2D arrays to complex 3D structures. Another major advantage of cold atoms is their ability to mediate interactions between photons, which do not naturally interact in free space. Cold atomic ensembles act as a nonlinear medium, enabling strong interactions even at the two-photon level. Using collective atom-photon coupling and Rydberg-state excitations, they allow for photon-photon gates and the creation of non-classical states of light. These two features—strong optical nonlinearities and precise atomic positioning—make cold atoms a leading platform for quantum networks, quantum simulations, and studies of light-matter interaction. A phenomenon common to both platforms is photon scattering, which can either be of an intended or unintended nature. Up until recently, simple theories of scattering were sufficient for the community. However, the advance of atomic platforms now requires more nuanced and sophisticated theories to understand scattering and their consequences on applications. This constitutes the main theme of the thesis. In the application of atom trapping, in many practical situations atoms may experience state-dependent potentials. The potential mismatch can lead to excess heating and reduced elastic scattering of light, as compared to well-known limits like an atom in “magic-wavelength” traps or a trapped ion. In the first part of the thesis, we develop a model to analyze these effects, which can have important consequences in quantum optics or in atom imaging. In the second part of the thesis, we investigate how Rydberg spin waves decohere in the presence of light scattering, within the context of Rydberg Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT). Within Rydberg EIT, an initial photon is stored as a coherent, extended superposition across atoms. This initial photon can strongly modify the propagation of subsequent photons, leading to large nonlinearities, but the scattering of subsequent photons can reveal information about where the first photon was stored, leading to decoherence of the initial superposition state. This in turn can lead to decreased utility or ability to retrieve the first photon. Here, we elucidate the nature of decoherence, and in particular for the first time we take fully into account the three-dimensional nature of the ensemble and its multiple scattering of light. We find regimes in which multiple scattering might offer additional protection from decoherence, as compared to previous simplified theories. Overall, this thesis makes new advances in understanding the nature of microscopic atom-light interactions and scattering, and connects this fundamental physics to key consequences in real-life applications.
Photons travelling through free space do not interact with each other. This characteristic makes them perfect candidates to carry quantum information over long distances. On the other hand, processing the information they encode requires interaction mechanisms. In recent years, there have been growing efforts to realize strong, controlled interactions between photons by making them interact with individual atoms, which are intrinsically nonlinear objects. This, and the efforts to understand the phenomena that can emerge, have spawned the new field of`"quantum nonlinear optics." A number of approaches have been pursued to attain near-deterministic atom-photon interactions, including the use of cavities (CQED), of atomic ensembles, and more recently of dielectric nanostructures able to confine light without defocusing, thus enabling the interaction with atoms trapped in the proximity of the structures. While for the CQED case powerful theoretical tools have been developed to treat the interactions of photons, in the case of atomic ensembles, either in free space or coupled to nanophotonic structures, there is a general lack of theoretical methods beyond the linear regime. This relative lack of understanding also implies that there could be rich new physical phenomena that have thus far not been identified. The overall goal of this thesis is to explore these themes in greater detail. In Chapter 2 of this thesis we develop a new formalism to calculate the properties of quantum light when interfaced with atomic ensembles. The method consists of using a "spin model" that maps a quasi one-dimensional (1D) light propagation problem to the dynamics of an open 1D interacting spin system, where all of the photon correlations are obtained from those of the spins. The spin dynamics can be numerically solved using the toolbox of matrix product states (MPS), thus providing a technique to study strongly interacting photons in the true many-body limit. In Chapter 3 we investigate the possibility of creating exotic phases of matter using the recently realized photonic crystal waveguide (PCW)-atoms interface. In particular, we examine the consequences that arise from the strong interatomic forces mediated by the exchange of band gap photons, whose strengths also depend strongly on the internal atomic states (¿spins¿). Taking one realistic model, we show that "quantum crystallization" can occur, in which the emergent spatial orders of atoms depend intricately on the spin correlations. In Chapter 4 we investigate the possibility of implementing second-order nonlinear quantum optical processes with graphene nanostructures, as a more robust alternative to the use of atomic systems. We quantify the second-order nonlinear properties, showing that the tight confinement of surface plasmons (SP) in graphene gives rise to extraordinary interaction strengths at the single-photon level. Finally, we predict that opportunely engineered arrays of graphene nanostructures can provide a second harmonic generation efficiency comparable with that of state-of-the-art nonlinear crystals, with the high Ohmic losses of graphene serving as the fundamental limitation for deterministic processes. In Chapter 5 we investigate a new paradigm for quantum memories of light based upon ordered atomic arrays. In particular, we show that the strong constructive interference in optical emission can give rise to a significantly enhanced atom-light interface, as compared to a standard, disordered atomic ensemble. In the case of a single, 2D atomic layer, we find the impressive result that a memory realized with 16 atoms can have the same storage efficiency as an atomic ensemble with optical depth larger than 100.
