Abstract

In order to make quantum information science applicable to the real world, it is necessary to change direction to focus on engineering technology based on quantum communication theory. Consequently, we can expect the following abilities: the possibilities of ultrahigh-speed optical communication, the feasibility of all-weather sensors, and enhancing the security of the physical layer of current optical networks. In addition, clarifying decoherence properties of quantum processors in the sense of noise analysis is important for real applications of quantum technology. The aim of Special Issue was to consolidate and publish the latest research trends by researchers who are conducting research toward the above goals.

Quantum Communication: From Fundamentals to Recent Trends, Challenges and Open Problems

Dutta, Hrishikesh, Amit Kumar Bhuyan

With the recent advancements and developments in quantum technologies, the emerging field of quantum communication and networking has gained the attention of the researchers. Owing to the unique properties of quantum mechanics, viz., quantum superposition and entanglement, this new area of quantum communication has shown potential to replace modernday communication technologies. The enhanced security and high information sharing ability using principles of quantum mechanics has encouraged networking engineers and physicists to develop this technology for next generation wireless systems. However, a conceptual bridge between the fundamentals of quantum mechanics, photonics and the deployability of a quantum communication infrastructure is not well founded in the current literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by merging the theoretical concepts from quantum physics to the engineering and computing perspectives of quantum technology. This paper builds the fundamental concepts required for understanding quantum communication, reviews the key concepts and demonstrates how these concepts can be leveraged for accomplishing successful communication. The paper delves into implementation advancements for executing quantum communication protocols, explaining how hardware implementation enables the achievement of all basic quantum computing operations. Finally, the paper provides a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art advancements in the field of quantum communication and quantum internet; and points out the recent trends, challenges and open problems for the real-world realization of next generation networking systems.

Photonic Quantum Technologies

Mohamed Benyoucef, Anthony J. Bennett, Stephan Götzinger +1 more

Photons are very promising resources for the whole field of quantum information processing. Bulk optics are currently not suitable for the realization of complex quantum optical schemes due to several drawbacks. The ongoing miniaturization of photonic structures due to the availability of sophisticated nanofabrication has provided huge opportunities for physical research of novel phenomena in nanophotonic systems and quantum technological applications. These include quantum information processing such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum metrology, and quantum sensing. Quantum communication is already quite advanced with several quantum key distribution (QKD) systems commercially available offering absolute security. Photonic quantum technologies are enabling breakthroughs in experimental tests of quantum physics and are close to practical applications of quantum technologies in imaging, secure communications, ultrasensitive metrology and quantum computing. There are several advantages to encoding a quantum bit onto a photon: the preparation and manipulation of single photons is easy, and the photonic qubit is a natural candidate for quantum imaging and communications. Furthermore, the qubit can be encoded in various degrees of freedom such as on the position, phase, time-bin, energy, angular momentum, polarization of the photon—or a combination of these. This flexibility leads to enormous opportunities for scientific exploration and in practical applications. This special issue on “Photonic Quantum Technologies” presents selected papers on photonic quantum systems from leading groups in the world. The articles represent a flavor of the cutting-edge research that is going on in this area. The studied material systems range from molecules to semiconductor quantum emitters. A major challenge is the design of telecom photon emitters with high efficiency, good yield, spectral purity, stability and the possibility of mass manufacture. We believe that this Special Issue will provide an overview of recent exciting developments in the field of photonic quantum technologies, serving to keep researchers up-to-date with the latest progress and spurring on new concepts in this field.

Quantum Communication Technologies: Future Trends And Prospects For Innovation

Karan Mathews Shaji, Ravishankar S. Dudhe, Roma Raina

Humanity’s social, economic, and technological progress could not have been made without communications infrastructure. The need to attain the sophistication of long-distance communication has grown steadily since the dawn of civilization. The modern global communications system is the single greatest infrastructural project in human history. The global telecommunications grid which uses satellites, deep-sea fiber-optic systems, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microwave and other radio, and optical-frequency communications networks are tremendous in coverage, unparalleled in connection, and ubiquitous in application. As we approach the middle of the 21st century, this system’s next major update will incorporate quantum communications technology. Quantum communication, in tandem with quantum computing and quantum sensing, constitutes one of the three pillars of second-generation quantum technology and promises an array of novel applications. Considering the reliable transmission of quantum information often requires the transport of individual particles of light photons through a world inundated by trillions upon trillions of photons, quantum communication systems are an engineering marvel. To provide a technological alternative for existing public-key encryption protocols, which are now susceptible to the threat posed by future quantum computing systems, nascent commercial quantum communication networks aim to realize the potential for cryptographic security provided by the laws of quantum mechanics. However, a number of obstacles must be overcome before quantum communications can be widely adopted. This study focuses on the current state of quantum communication, the promise of its prospects in the near and far future, the obstacles it faces, and the breakthroughs and applications developed by the United Arab Emirates.
