Quantum measurement and uncertainty relations in photon polarization

Keiichi Edamatsu

Abstract Recent theoretical and experimental studies have given raise to new aspects in quantum measurements and error-disturbance uncertainty relations. After a brief review of these issues, we present an experimental test of the error-disturbance uncertainty relations in photon polarization measurements. Using a generalized, strength-variable measurement of a single photon polarization state, we experimentally evaluate the error and disturbance in the measurement process and demonstrate the validity of recently proposed uncertainty relations.

Weak Measurements with Adjustable Strength

Sofya Manko, Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

The method for weak measurements with an ad-justable strength is proposed and implemented on an IBM quantum computer. The relationship between the strength, the qubit disturbance and the accuracy of the measurement are investigated.

Experimental Test of Error-Disturbance Uncertainty Relations by Weak Measurement

Fumihiro Kaneda, So-Young Baek, Masanao Ozawa +1 more

We experimentally test the error-disturbance uncertainty relation (EDR) in generalized, strength-variable measurement of a single photon polarization qubit, making use of weak measurement that keeps the initial signal state practically unchanged. We demonstrate that the Heisenberg EDR is violated, yet the Ozawa and Branciard EDRs are valid throughout the range of our measurement strength.

Test of weak measurement on a two- or three-qubit computer

Todd A. Brun, Lajos Diósi, Walter T. Strunz

Current quantum computer technology is sufficient to realize weak measurements and the corresponding concept of ``weak values.'' We demonstrate how the weak value anomaly can be tested, along with consistency and simultaneity of weak values, using only discrete degrees of freedom. All that is needed is a quantum computer with two---or better, three---qubits. We also give an interpretation of the weak value as an effective field strength in a post-selected spin measurement.

Computer model of a qubit

D. A. Slavnov

A computer model of a qubit is constructed. We have considered a number of key experiments in the physics of quantum information: (1) the distribution of value of quantum observables for a single qubit, (ii) correlation functions in a quantum singlet state of two qubits, (iii) the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox, (iv) the violation of the Bell inequality, (v) quantum-state teleportation, (vi) and the fidelity of teleportation. In all these cases the proposed model regularly reproduces results of quantum measurements without the use of adjustable parameters.

Error-disturbance uncertainty relations in a superconducting quantum processor

TINGRUI DONG, So-Young Baek, Fumihiro Kaneda +1 more

We experimentally test the error-disturbance uncertainty relation (EDR) in generalized, variable strength measurements of superconducting qubits on a NISQ processor. Making use of sequential weak measurements that keeps the initial signal state practically unchanged prior to the main measurement, we demonstrate that the Heisenberg EDR is violated, yet the Ozawa and Branciard EDRs are valid throughout the range of measurement strengths from no measurement to projection measurement. Our results verify that universal EDRs are valid even in a noisy quantum processor and will stimulate research on measurement-based quantum information and communication protocols using a NISQ processor.
