Abstract

Aiming at the threat of eavesdropping in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communication networks, multiuser secure communication with multi-relay nodes and multi-eavesdropping threats is investigated in this paper. By deploying a dual-antenna UAV relay node, a hybrid decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol is considered to transmit data. In addition, cooperative jamming techniques are used in order to improve the performance of the secure confidential communication. The secure communication problem is formulated as an optimization problem. The goal is to maximize the minimum secrecy transmission rate subject to UAV transmitting power, user transmitting power, and channel bandwidth. By introducing a grey wolf optimizer (GWO), the suboptimal solution is obtained. Simulation results show that the GWO has higher secrecy transmission rate than the firefly algorithm and the average bandwidth and fixed transmitting power method.

UAV-Aided Secure Communication With Deployment Optimization and Cooperative Jamming

Hongbing Li, Juan Wu, Lei Luo +1 more

This paper investigates the jointly transmit power and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)/jammer deployment optimization problem for UAV enabled jammer-assisted secure communication systems, where a jammer is exploited to assist transmitting data from a source node to a legitimate destination node in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. To increase the secrecy energy efficiency, which is defined as the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, we formulate a secrecy energy efficiency maximization problem by jointly optimizing the transmit power and UAV/jammer deployment. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a non-convex and fractional optimization problem, which is challenging to solve. As such, we decompose the original problem into two sub-problems, and then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the extensive search method and Dinkelbach method in combination with successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the secrecy energy efficiency of the system.

On the Performance of Low-Altitude UAV-Enabled Secure AF Relaying With Cooperative Jamming and SWIPT

Milad Tatar Mamaghani, Yi Hong

This paper proposes a novel cooperative secure unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided transmission protocol, where a source sends confidential information to a destination via an energy-constrained UAV-mounted amplify-and-forward relay in the presence of a ground eavesdropper. We adopt destination-assisted cooperative jamming as well as simultaneous wireless information and power transfer at the UAV-mounted relay to enhance physical-layer security and transmission reliability. Assuming a low-altitude UAV, we derive connection probability, secrecy outage probability, instantaneous secrecy rate, and average secrecy rate of the proposed protocol over Air-Ground channels, which are modeled as Rician fading with elevation-angel dependent parameters. Further, we analyze the asymptotic average secrecy rate performance of the proposed UAV-relaying scheme and derive high signal-to-noise ratio measures of the average secrecy rate to highlight the effect of various channel features on the system performance. By simulations, we verify our novel theoretical exact and approximate results and demonstrate significant performance improvement of our protocol, when compared to conventional transmission protocol with ground relaying and UAV-based transmission protocol without exploiting destination jamming. Finally, we evaluate the impacts of various system parameters, specifically, find the optimal UAV placement on the proposed protocol in terms of the aforementioned secrecy metrics.

Secure Communications via Two-Phase Jamming Beamforming in UAV Relaying Networks

Xiaozheng Gao, Yalin Zhang, Qing Shen +4 more

This paper investigates secure communications between a pair of ground transceivers with the aid of a relay unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Specifically, we consider a powerful eavesdropper who conducts eavesdropping attacks in two transmission phases. The multi-antenna transmitter communicates with the UAV through information beamforming in Phase I, and the UAV relays the secrecy data through a single antenna to the receiver in Phase II. We propose a secure transmission scheme where the transmitter utilizes artificial noise technique to interfere with the eavesdropper through jamming beamforming in two phases. In particular, we formulate an optimization problem, and employ the max-min optimization, block coordinate descent, semi-definite relaxation, and successive convex approximation methods to deal with it. Simulation results verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed secure transmission scheme.

Secure AF Relaying in Power-Constrained UAV Networks

Lutfi Samara, Abubakr O. Al-Abbasi, Ahmed El Shafie +2 more

This paper proposes a secure amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks while accounting for the power consumption limitations of UAVs. Since a UAV's battery life is limited, we propose selecting the UAV relays based on their probability of availability, which we model to be a function of the UAV's power consumption model. Then, physical layer security is achieved by partitioning the limited available relays into information relaying UAVs and cooperative jammers while aiming to maximize the secrecy rate of the network when an eavesdropper is located in the vicinity of the destination node. Meanwhile, the information bearing relays use beamforming to enhance the information delivery to the destination, and the cooperative jamming relays use precoded artificial-noise scheme to degrade the eavesdropping links' received signal-to-noise ratios. Simulation results show significant secrecy rate enhancements when the proposed schemes are adopted compared to conventional relaying scenarios, especially when cooperative jamming is deployed.

Secure UAV Communication With Cooperative Jamming and Trajectory Control

Canhui Zhong, Jianping Yao, Jie Xu

This letter presents a new cooperative jamming approach to secure the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication by leveraging jamming from other nearby UAVs to defend against the eavesdropping. In particular, we consider a two-UAV scenario when one UAV transmitter delivers the confidential information to a ground node (GN), and the other UAV jammer cooperatively sends the artificial noise to confuse the ground eavesdropper for protecting the confidentiality of the data transmission. By exploiting the fully controllable mobility, the two UAVs can adaptively adjust their locations over time (a.k.a. trajectories) to facilitate the secure communication and cooperative jamming. We assume that the two UAVs perfectly know the GN's location and partially know the eavesdropper's location a priori. Under this setup, we maximize the average secrecy rate from the UAV transmitter to the GN over one particular time period, by optimizing the UAVs' trajectories, jointly with their communicating/jamming power allocations. Although the formulated problem is non-convex, we propose an efficient solution by applying the techniques of alternating optimization and successive convex approximation.

Joint Trajectory Optimization and Power Control for Cognitive UAV-Assisted Secure Communications

Can Wang, Helin Yang, Liang Xiao +2 more

Cognitive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication systems combine benefits of both the cognitive radio and UAV, which improves the spectral efficiency and communication coverage area. However, high-quality air-ground channel links maybe more vulnerable to potential eavesdropping or jamming attacks. Thus, this paper proposes a secure transmission approach assisted by deploying a cooperative UAV to transmit artificial noise to jam an active eavesdropper, in order to maximize the system secrecy rate under the quality of service (QoS) requirement of a primary device. Specifically, we jointly optimize the flight trajectory and transmission power of the cooperative jammer to maximize the system's secrecy rate under strict constraints. To achieve this, we convert the non-convex problem into an approximately convex problem using the block coordinate descent algorithm and successive convex approximation method. Simulation results show that compared to existing algorithms, the proposed algorithm in this study can significantly improve the system's secrecy rate.
