Feshbach resonances in ultracold atom-molecule collisions

Andrea Simoni, Jean–Michel Launay, Pavel Soldán

We investigate the presence of Feshbach resonances in ultracold alkali-dialkali reactive collisions. A potential-energy surface of ${\text{Na}}_{3}$ in the lowest quartet state is constructed and used in quantum scattering calculations. An analysis of scattering features is performed through a systematic variation in the nonadditive three-body interaction potential. Our results should provide useful information for interpreting future atom-molecule collision experiments.

Formation of bosonic Na 23 K 41 Feshbach molecules

Sungjun Lee, Y S Lim, Jongyeol Kim +2 more

Ultracold Feshbach molecules are a crucial intermediate step for the creation of quantum degenerate gases of strongly dipolar molecules. After coherent transfer to the rovibrational ground state, these dimers can realize stable dipolar gases with strong, tunable long-range interactions. Here, we report the creation of bosonic Na 23 K 41 Feshbach molecules by radio-frequency (RF) association. An RF pulse applied on the molecular side of an interspecies Feshbach resonance at 73.6(1) G associates up to 1.1 ( 1 ) × 10 4 molecules from a thermal mixture of Na 23 and K 41 atoms. Measurements of the binding energy reveal a broad resonance width of 5.1(2) G, facilitating robust control over interspecies interactions. The molecule lifetime in the presence of background atoms exceeds 2 ms and increases to approximately 7 ms after removal of Na 23 . These results constitute a key step toward the production of ultracold Na 23 K 41 ground-state molecules and for pursuing shielded evaporative cooling in the dipolar regime.

Magnetically Tunable Feshbach Resonances in Ultracold Li-Yb Mixtures

Daniel A. Brue, Jeremy M. Hutson

We investigate the possibility of forming Li+Yb ultracold molecules by magnetoassociation in mixtures of ultracold atoms. We find that magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances exist, but are extremely narrow for even-mass ytterbium isotopes, which all have zero spin. For odd-mass Yb isotopes, however, there is a new mechanism due to hyperfine coupling between the electron spin and the Yb nuclear magnetic moment. This mechanism produces Feshbach resonances for fermionic Yb isotopes that can be more than 2 orders of magnitude larger than for the bosonic counterparts.
