Adiabatic approximation for the evolution generated by an A-uniformly pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian

Wenhua Wang, Huaixin Cao, Zhengli Chen

We discuss an adiabatic approximation for the evolution generated by an A-uniformly pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian H(t). Such a Hamiltonian is a time-dependent operator H(t) similar to a time-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian G(t) under a time-independent invertible operator A. Using the relation between the solutions of the evolution equations H(t) and G(t), we prove that H(t) and H † (t) have the same real eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors form two biorthogonal Riesz bases for the state space. For the adiabatic approximate solution in case of the minimum eigenvalue and the ground state of the operator H(t), we prove that this solution coincides with the system state at every instant if and only if the ground eigenvector is time-independent. We also find two upper bounds for the adiabatic approximation error in terms of the norm distance and in terms of the generalized fidelity. We illustrate the obtained results with several examples.

Generalized quantum Rabi model with both one- and two-photon terms: A concise analytical study

You-Fei Xie, Liwei Duan, Qing‐Hu Chen

A generalized quantum Rabi Hamiltonian with both one- and two-photon terms has emerged in the circuit quantum electrodynamics system for a decade. The usual parity symmetry is broken naturally in the simultaneous presence of both couplings, which complicates analytical treatments, even in the rotating-wave approximations. In this paper, we propose an adiabatic approximation to this generic model by using Bogoliubov operators and obtain a very concise analytical solution for both eigenvalues and eigenstates. Although the adiabatic approximation is only exact in the vanishing limit of the qubit frequency, the results for some physical observables nevertheless agree well with the numerical ones in a wide parameter regime. In the rotating-wave approximations, we also derive an analytical eigensolution. Two dominant Rabi frequencies are found in the Rabi oscillations of this generalized model. We also apply the present analytical theory to the vacuum Rabi splitting. It is found that some different phenomena emerge just because of the presence of the additional two-photon coupling term.

The Leading Order of the Theory of Strong Perturbations in Quantum Mechanics

Marco Frasca

We prove that, for a quantum system that undergoes a strong perturbation, the solution of the leading order equation of the strong field approximation (M.Frasca, Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 45}, 43 (1992)) can be derived by the adiabatic approximation. In fact, it is shown that greatest is the perturbation and more similar the quantum system is to an adiabatic one, the solution being written as a superposition of eigenstates of the time-dependent perturbation.A direct consequence of this result is that the solution of the Schrödinger equation in the interaction picture, in the same approximation for the perturbation, coincides with the one of the leading order of the strong field approximation. The limitation due to the requirement that the perturbation has to commute at different times is so overcome. Computational difficulties could arise to go to higher orders. Beside, the method is not useful for perturbations that are constant in time. In such a case a small time series is obtained, indicating that this approximation is just an application to quantum mechanics of the Kirkwood-Wigner expansion of statistical mechanics. The theory obtained in this way is applied to a time-dependent two-level spin model, already considered for the study of the Berry's phase, showing that a geometrical phase could arise if a part of the hamiltonian is considered as a strong perturbation. No adiabatic approximation is taken on the parameters of the hamiltonian, while their cyclicity is retained.
