Abstract

We build a quantum optical theory of strongly-driven many-body systems. We find that quantum correlated emitters result in strongly nonclassical emission, opening a new path towards generating quantum light and characterizing quantum correlated matter.

Realization of waveguide many-body quantum optics

Lena M. Hansen, Clara Henke, Christoph Hotter +13 more

Controlling light photon-by-photon is central to quantum optics. At a fundamental level, photon interactions are mediated by their coupling to atoms, and ultimate control requires deterministic light-matter interfacing of single photons to single atoms. Extending this paradigm to radiatively couple multiple individual atoms in a deterministic and scalable manner opens the arena of many-body quantum optics. Here, we realize such a setting by coherently coupling solid-state artificial atoms to a nanophotonic waveguide and demonstrate higher-order photon correlations that are controlled by the number of quantum emitters. We study the scaling of nonlinear photonic transport induced by emitter-photon scattering and demonstrate that adding a quantum emitter generates higher-order photon correlations. Specifically, we experimentally observe genuine three-photon correlations from a pair of collectively coupled emitters, while contributions from lower photon numbers are suppressed. In addition, we scale to three resonant quantum emitters coupled to the waveguide. These advancements demonstrate the onset of many-body quantum optics in waveguide quantum electrodynamics, enabling new photonic quantum simulators, the creation of many-body entangled states, and the exploration of novel quantum phase transitions.

High-order correlations and ultrafast Wigner negativities in bright-squeezed-vacuum-driven high-harmonic generation

Sebastián de-la-Peña, Heiko Appel, Marcelo F. Ciappina +2 more

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is a prototypical strong-field process in which intense light drives matter to emit radiation at integer multiples of the driving frequency. Extending HHG into the quantum-optical regime offers new opportunities to probe and control strongly nonlinear light-matter interactions using nonclassical states of light. Yet describing this regime requires a fully quantum treatment of the correlated electron-photon dynamics, which becomes computationally challenging for broadband, strongly squeezed fields. Here we solve the quantum-electrodynamical dynamics of a two-level system driven by bright squeezed vacuum in a converged multimode Hilbert space. Both the driving field and emitted harmonics are fully quantized, with the light-matter interaction treated nonperturbatively. This enables direct access to the multimode quantum state and its higher-order correlations beyond semiclassical sampling or perturbative descriptions. We show that squeezed-vacuum driving produces harmonic emission with qualitatively distinct second- and third-order photon correlations compared with coherent excitation. Moreover, back-action from the driven emitter strongly reshapes the incident squeezed field, generating pronounced Wigner-function negativities that evolve on attosecond timescales. Our results establish a fully quantum framework for broadband strong-field dynamics with squeezed light and provide a route to predicting and interpreting quantum-HHG experiments and their extension to more complex emitters.

Quantum-optical analysis of high-order harmonic generation in H 2 + molecules

Javier Rivera-Dean, Philipp Stammer, Andrew Maxwell +5 more

We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of high-order harmonic generation in ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}{}^{+}$ molecules within a quantum-optical framework. Our study focuses on characterizing various quantum-optical and quantum-information measures stemming from the correlations established between light and matter. We demonstrate the emergence of entanglement between electron and light states after the laser-matter interaction. We also identify the possibility of obtaining nonclassical states of light in targeted frequency modes by conditioning on specific electronic quantum states, which turn out to be crucial in the generation of highly nonclassical entangled states between distinct sets of harmonic modes. Our findings open up avenues for studying strong-laser-field-driven interactions in molecular systems under a fully quantum-mechanical framework.
