Abstract

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel method for fiber delivery of optical frequency references by all-optical cancellation of fiber-induced degradation on the outward trip during the return trip without any active feedback control.

We have transferred a narrow-linewidth $1.5{\mu}m$ laser beam through a 525 m fiber network with excellent transfer stability. The fiber-induced optical phase noise during the fiber transmission is cancelled by configuring a noise-canceling servo. The transfer instability was $2{\times}10^{-17}$ at 1 s of averaging time. We quantitatively analyzed the transferred optical frequency in the frequency domain and in the time domain.

Remote Transfer of Ultra-Stable Optical Frequency Reference using Active Cancellation of Fiber Induced Phase Noise

Manoj Das

Comparison of ultra-stable frequency references located in geographically distributed areas require a transfer technique, which offers stability of 10−17at 1 s over tens of kilometer. Such remote frequency transfer will allow comparing the optical frequency references of same or different atomic species (through a frequency comb bridge) for test of relativistic geodesy [1] or time variation of fundamental constants [2], and will contribute towards the database of frequency ratio measurements-an essential requirement for the re-definition of the SI second based on optical clocks [3]. It will also facilitate in creating an optical to microwave frequency link that can be used by various SI standards laboratory requiring stable microwave sources. In this paper, I discuss the modulated optical carrier wave based ultra-stable frequency reference transfer technique, and present a study of a laser interferometer based active fiber noise cancellation system and its applications.

Delivering the same optical frequency at two places: accurate cancellation of phase noise introduced by an optical fiber or other time-varying path

Although a single-mode optical fiber is a convenient and efficient interface/connecting medium, it introduces phase-noise modulation, which corrupts high-precision frequency-based applications by broadening the spectrum toward the kilohertz domain. We describe a simple double-pass fiber noise measurement and control system, which is demonstrated to provide millihertz accuracy of noise cancellation.

Frequency transfer via a two-way optical phase comparison on a multiplexed fiber network

Claudio Eligio Calosso, Elio K. Bertacco, Davide Calonico +6 more

We performed a two-way remote optical phase comparison on optical fiber. Two optical frequency signals were launched in opposite directions in an optical fiber and their phases were simultaneously measured at the other end. In this technique, the fiber noise was passively cancelled, and we compared two optical frequencies at the ultimate 10-21 stability level. The experiment was performed on a 47 km fiber that is part of the metropolitan network for Internet traffic. The technique relies on the synchronous measurement of the optical phases at the two ends of the link, that is made possible by the use of digital electronics. This scheme offers some advantages with respect to active noise cancellation schemes, as the light travels only once in the fiber
