Abstract

Underwater quantum communication plays a crucial role in ensuring secure data transmission and extensible quantum networks in underwater environments. However, the implementation of such applications encounters challenges due to the light attenuation caused by the complicated natural seawater. This paper focuses on employing a model based on seawater chlorophyll-a concentration to characterize the absorption and scattering of light through quantum channels. We propose a multi-scattering random channel model, which demonstrates characteristics of the excess noise in different propagation directions of communication links. Furthermore, we consider the fidelity of a continuous-variable quantum teleportation through seawater channel. To enhance transmission performance, non-Gaussian operations have been conducted. Numerical simulations show that incorporating non-Gaussian operations enables the protocol to achieve higher fidelity transmission or lower fidelity fading rates over longer transmission distances.

Performance Analysis of Continuous Variable Quantum Teleportation with Noiseless Linear Amplifier in Seawater Channel

Hao Wu, Xu Liu, Hang Zhang +2 more

Continuous variable quantum teleportation (CVQT) is one of the technologies currently explored to implement global quantum networks. Entanglement source is an indispensable resource to realize CVQT, and its distribution process has natural symmetry. Though there are many results for CVQT over optical fiber or atmospheric channel, little attention is paid to seawater channel. In this paper, a model based on seawater chlorophyll concentration is used to study the attenuation effect of seawater on light. In our scheme, a noiseless linear amplifier is utilized for enhancing the performance of CVQT under seawater channel. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has an improvement in terms of fidelity and maximum transmission distance compared with the original scheme.

Underwater quantum key distribution with continuous-variable via photon additions

Jiali Huang, Wei Ye, Cunjin Liu +2 more

Quantum key distribution with continuous-variable (CVQKD) provides an alternative way for the security improvement of underwater optical communication, but facing into the awkward situation of short distance. For this reason, here we exploit photon addition operation at the emitter into enhancing the performance of underwater CVQKD. Based on numerical simulation, it is shown that applying photon-addition non-Gaussian operation between entangled resource and the sender can further enhance both the secure key rate and the transmission distance, compared to apply photon subtraction operation between entangled resource and the receiver. In addition, the influence of seawater quality factors in underwater CVQKD system is also considered, so as to provide technical support for underwater safety communication.

Passive Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution through the Oceanic Turbulence

Yiwu Zhu, Lei Mao, Hui Hu +1 more

Continuous variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) can be potentially implemented through seawater channels, whereas the involved oceanic turbulence has a negative effect on the maximal transmission distance of quantum communication systems. Here, we demonstrate the effects of the oceanic turbulence on the performance of the CVQKD system and suggest an implementation feasibility of the passive CVQKD through the oceanic turbulence-based channel. We achieve the channel transmittance characterized by the transmission distance and depth of the seawater. Moreover, a non-Gaussian approach is used for performance improvement while counteracting the effects of excess noises on the oceanic channel. Numerical simulations show that the photon operation (PO) unit can bring reductions of excess noise when taking into account the oceanic turbulence, and hence results in performance improvement in terms of transmission distance and depth as well. The passive CVQKD explores the intrinsic field fluctuations of a thermal source without using an active scheme and hence has a promising application in chip integration for portable quantum communications.

Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Based on N-APSK Modulation over Seawater Channel

Lei Mao, Zhangtao Liang, Zhiyue Zuo +2 more

A continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) can be realized over the seawater channel, but the transmission of quantum signals in seawater media exhibits significant attenuation effects. Therefore, we propose an N-symbol amplitude and phase shift keying (N-APSK) modulation scheme to enhance the transmission performance of the CVQKD over the seawater channel. Specifically, an optimal N-APSK modulation scheme is designed based on the principle of maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MED). The simulation results show that the CVQKD protocol based on N-APSK modulation achieves a longer transmission distance over the seawater channel compared to the Gaussian modulation protocol. Additionally, increasing the value of N simultaneously expands the number of rings in the constellation diagram, further enhancing the communication distance. This study transfers modulation methods from the field of classical communications to the field of quantum communications, achieving a substantial improvement in communication distance and thereby promoting the integration of quantum communications and classical communications.

Continuous variable-based quantum communication in the ocean

Ramniwas Meena, Subhashish Banerjee

Abstract Continuous Variable-Based Quantum Cryptography (CV-QKD) is an emerging field in quantum information science, offering unprecedented security for communication protocols by harnessing the principles of quantum mechanics. However, ocean environments pose unique challenges to quantum communication due to their distinct properties and characteristics. This work investigates the impact of turbulence on the transmission of Gaussian light beams used in a continuous variable-based quantum key distribution system for underwater quantum communication. The objective is to quantitatively analyze the induced losses and propose methodologies to mitigate their effects. To achieve this, we adopt the widely accepted ABCD matrix formalism, which provides a comprehensive framework for characterizing the propagation of optical beams through different media. Moreover, a numerical simulation framework is developed to assess the resulting losses and evaluate the performance of the proposed system. The implications of these numerical simulation frameworks for the design and optimization of quantum communication systems for oceanic environments are thoroughly discussed.

Performance optimization of continuous-variable quantum teleportation with generalized photon-varying non-Gaussian operations

Mingjian He, Shouyin Liu

Continuous variable quantum teleportation provides a path to the long-distance transmission of quantum states. Photon-varying non-Gaussian operations have been shown to improve the fidelity of quantum teleportation when integrated into the protocol. However, for a given type of non-Gaussian operation, the achievable fidelity varies with the parameters associated with the operation. Previous work only focused on particular settings of the parameters, over which an optimization was missing. The potential of such operations is not fully uncovered. Given a fixed non-Gaussian operation, the achievable fidelity also varies with input states. An operation that increases the fidelity for teleporting one class of states might do the contrary for other classes of states. A performance metric, upon which an operation is optimized, suitable for different input states, is also missing. In this work, we build a framework for photon-varying non-Gaussian operations for multimode states, upon which we propose a performance metric suitable for arbitrary teleportation input states. We then apply the new metric to evaluate different types of non-Gaussian operations. Starting from simple multiphoton photon subtraction and photon addition, we find that increasing the number of ancillary photons involved in the operation does not guarantee performance improvement. We then investigate a generalization of the operations mentioned above, finding that operations that approximate a particular form provide the best improvement. The results provided here will be valuable for real-world implementations of quantum teleportation networks and applications that harness the non-Gaussianity of quantum states.
