Current-density functional theory for bosonic superfluids

Abstract

Abstract A finite-temperature current-density functional theory for bosonic superfluids (sf-CDFT) in the thermal equilibrium state is proposed herein. In the sf-CDFT, hydrodynamic physical quantities, such as particle number density, current density, and the order parameter of the Bose–Einstein condensation, are chosen as the basic variables. This theory enables the simultaneous reproduction of the particle number and current densities of both the superfluid and normal fluid components with incorporating effects of the interaction between these components. Specifically, these components are determined by solving two single-particle equations, i.e., the Gross–Pitaevskii–Kohn–Sham and Kohn–Sham equations. Furthermore, using the continuity equation of superfluids, we present the sum rule for the exchange-correlation energy functional of the sf-CDFT, which is useful for developing the approximate form.

Current–Density Functional Theory for the Superconductor and Its Exchange–Correlation Energy Functional

Katsuhiko Higuchi, Hiroyasu Niwa, Masahiko Higuchi

We present the current–density functional theory for the superconductor immersed in the magnetic field. The order parameter of the superconducting state, transverse component of the paramagnetic current–density, and electron density are chosen as basic variables that uniquely determine the equilibrium properties of the system. In order to construct this theory, the development of the approximate form of the exchange–correlation (xc) energy functional is indispensable as well as the derivation of the effective single-particle equation which makes it possible to reproduce the equilibrium densities mentioned above. The rigorous expression of the xc-energy functional is derived using the technique of the coupling-constant integration. Furthermore, the approximate form of the xc energy functional is proposed such that the energy gap resulting from the effective single-particle equation is consistent with the attractive interaction energy of the system.

1 Time-dependent linear response of an inhomogeneous Bose superfluid: Microscopic theory and connection to current-density functional theory

M. L. Chiofalo, Anna Minguzzi, Monica Tosi

The dynamics of a confined fluid of Bose atoms is treated within the linear response regime, with a view to establishing a current-density functional formalism for an inhomogeneous superfluid state. After evaluating in full detail a simplified case of an external coupling to the density and phase of the condensate, the theory is extended to include the coupling to the total current density. The Kohn-Sham response functions of the condensate and all the exchange-correlation kernels for the superfluid are introduced from the microscopic equations of motion and are expressed in a physically transparent way through functional derivatives of correlation functions. A microscopic formula for the superfluid density is derived and used to introduce a generalized hydrodynamic approach for a weakly inhomogeneous two-fluid model in isothermal conditions. Local-density expressions are thereby derived for the velocities of first and second sound in the weakly inhomogeneous superfluid and for visco-elastic functions describing the transition from the hydrodynamic to the collisionless regime. Landau's hydrodynamic theory and known results in Green's functions language are recovered in the limiting case of a homogeneous superfluid.

Microscopic derivation of density functional theory for superfluid systems based on effective action formalism

Takeru Yokota, Haruki Kasuya, Kenichi Yoshida +1 more

Abstract A density-functional theory for superfluid systems is developed in the framework of the functional renormalization group based on the effective action formalism. We introduce the effective action for the particle-number and non-local pairing densities and demonstrate that the Hohenberg–Kohn theorem for superfluid systems is established in terms of the effective action. The flow equation for the effective action is then derived, where the flow parameter runs from $0$ to $1$, corresponding to the non-interacting and interacting systems. From the flow equation and the variational equation that the equilibrium density satisfies, we obtain the exact expression for the Kohn–Sham potential generalized to include the pairing potentials. The resultant Kohn–Sham potential has a nice feature in that it expresses the microscopic formulae of the external, Hartree, pairing and exchange–correlation terms separately. It is shown that our Kohn–Sham potential gives the ground-state energy of the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory by neglecting the correlations. An advantage of our exact formalism lies in the fact that it provides ways to improve the correlation part systematically.

Kohn-Sham approximation scheme for an interacting Bose-condensed gas

Anna Okopińska

The grand canonical density functional theory for inhomogeneous systems of interacting bosons is developed in the effective action approach. The Legendre transform of the generating functional for Green's functions is used to define the effective action as a functional of both the particle density and the order parameter. Expanding the thermal effective action in powers of the Planck constant we obtain a systematic approximation scheme, which practically implements the Kohn-Sham idea: the problem of interacting bosons is reduced to a single-particle system in a fictitious external potential. The Kohn-Sham potential, the density and the order parameter have to be determined self-consistently in a given order approximation.

Finite-temperature superfluid depletion of disordered Bose gases

Cord Axel Müller

Abstract At zero temperature, homogeneous interacting Bose-condensed fluids are entirely superfluid, with remarkable transport properties. A non-superfluid, normal component is induced by finite temperatures and spatial inhomogeneity, the combined effects of which are rather intriguing, and difficult to describe quantitatively. By inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory, applicable to weakly interacting condensed Bose gases in static external potentials with arbitrary spatial correlations, we calculate the normal fluid density via the transverse current–current correlation. We obtain finite-temperature disorder corrections to the normal fraction known since Laudau’s seminal two-fluid theory, using diagrammatic perturbation theory for systems of any dimensionality, with closed analytical expressions to leading, quadratic order in disorder strength.
