Abstract

Abstract A density-functional theory for superfluid systems is developed in the framework of the functional renormalization group based on the effective action formalism. We introduce the effective action for the particle-number and non-local pairing densities and demonstrate that the Hohenberg–Kohn theorem for superfluid systems is established in terms of the effective action. The flow equation for the effective action is then derived, where the flow parameter runs from $0$ to $1$, corresponding to the non-interacting and interacting systems. From the flow equation and the variational equation that the equilibrium density satisfies, we obtain the exact expression for the Kohn–Sham potential generalized to include the pairing potentials. The resultant Kohn–Sham potential has a nice feature in that it expresses the microscopic formulae of the external, Hartree, pairing and exchange–correlation terms separately. It is shown that our Kohn–Sham potential gives the ground-state energy of the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory by neglecting the correlations. An advantage of our exact formalism lies in the fact that it provides ways to improve the correlation part systematically.

Generalized Kohn-Sham Density-Functional Theory via Effective Action Formalism

Marat Valiev, Gayanath Fernando

We present a rigorous formulation of generalized Kohn-Sham density-functional theory. This provides a straightforward Kohn-Sham description of many-body systems based not only on particle-density but also on any other observable. We illustrate the formalism for the case of a particle-density based description of a nonrelativistic many-electron system. We obtain a simple diagrammatic expansion of the exchange-correlation functional in terms of Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies; develop systematic Kohn-Sham formulation for one-electron propagators and many-body excitation energies. This work is ideally suited for practical applications and provides a rigorous basis for a systematic development of the existing body of first-principles calculations in a controllable fashion.

The Density Functional via Effective Action

Yi‐Kuo Yu

A rigorous derivation of the density functional via the effective action in the Hohenberg-Kohn theory is outlined. Using the auxiliary field method, in which the electric coupling constant $e^2$ need not be small, we show that the loop expansion of the exchange-correlation functional can be reorganized so as to be expressed entirely in terms of the Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies.

Derivation of the Density Functional via Effective Action

Yi‐Kuo Yu

A rigorous derivation of the density functional in the Hohenberg-Kohn theory is presented. With no assumption regarding the magnitude of the electric coupling constant $e^2$ (or correlation), this work provides a firm basis for first-principles calculations. Using the auxiliary field method, in which $e^2$ need not be small, we show that the bosonic loop expansion of the exchange-correlation functional can be reorganized so as to be expressed entirely in terms of the Kohn-Sham single-particle orbitals and energies. The excitations of the many-particle system can be obtained within the same formalism. We also explicitly demonstrate at zero-temperature the single-particle limit, the weak-coupling limit of the energy functional, and its application to homogeneous electron gas.

Density-Functional Theory for Time-Dependent Systems

Erich Runge, Eberhard K. U. Gross

A density-functional formalism comparable to the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham theory of the ground state is developed for arbitrary time-dependent systems. It is proven that the single-particle potential $v(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ leading to a given $v$-representable density $n(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ is uniquely determined so that the corresponding map $v\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n$ is invertible. On the basis of this theorem, three schemes are derived to calculate the density: a set of hydrodynamical equations, a stationary action principle, and an effective single-particle Schr\"odinger equation.

Functional renormalization group and Kohn–Sham scheme in density functional theory

Haozhao Liang, Yifei Niu, Tetsuo Hatsuda

Deriving accurate energy density functional is one of the central problems in condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and quantum chemistry. We propose a novel method to deduce the energy density functional by combining the idea of the functional renormalization group and the Kohn–Sham scheme in density functional theory. The key idea is to solve the renormalization group flow for the effective action decomposed into the mean-field part and the correlation part. Also, we propose a simple practical method to quantify the uncertainty associated with the truncation of the correlation part. By taking the φ4 theory in zero dimension as a benchmark, we demonstrate that our method shows extremely fast convergence to the exact result even for the highly strong coupling regime.

TREATMENTS OF THE EXCHANGE ENERGY IN DENSITY-FUNCTIONAL THEORY

TAMÁS GÁL

Following a recent work [Gál, Phys. Rev. A64, 062503 (2001)], a simple derivation of the density-functional correction of the Hartree–Fock equations, the Hartree–Fock–Kohn–Sham equations, is presented, completing an integrated view of quantum mechanical theories, in which the Kohn–Sham equations, the Hartree–Fock–Kohn–Sham equations and the ground-state Schrödinger equation formally stem from a common ground: density-functional theory, through its Euler equation for the ground-state density. Along similar lines, the Kohn–Sham formulation of the Hartree–Fock approach is also considered. Further, it is pointed out that the exchange energy of density-functional theory built from the Kohn–Sham orbitals can be given by degree-two homogeneous N-particle density functionals (N = 1, 2, …), forming a sequence of degree-two homogeneous exchange-energy density functionals, the first element of which is minus the classical Coulomb-repulsion energy functional.
