This paper considers a finite-sized two-leg ladder of spin-1/2 particles with local inter-chain Ising interaction. We include the effects of an external magnetic field by incorporating a Zeeman-type coupling between the magnetic field and the spins localized on the lattice sites. To analyze the system, we utilize the transfer-matrix formalism to calculate the partition function. We compute the magnetization for different configurations by varying the system's parameters. We observe the presence 3of spontaneous magnetization within the system. As the inter-chain Ising interaction changes its sign, the magnetization value changes from negative to positive values. Furthermore, we identify a phase transition from diamagnetic to ferromagnetic states when examining the temperature dependence of the magnetization at zero magnetic fields. We observe a step-like behavior in the magnetization curve in the low temperature limit.

Abstract In this paper we consider ladders with two, three, and four coupled Ising spin chains, characterized by interchain and intrachain couplings, to study in detail their magnetic behaviour for different ratios of the interaction constants and different values of magnetic field, by using a transfer matrix method and a complex algorithm, realizing the diagonalization and the differentiation. We have proposed a combined algorithm to realize also the generation of the elements of the transfer matrix for more complicated ladder configurations. The problem of Ising ladders is straightforward with a crossover between a 2D high‐temperature region and a 1D low‐temperature region when the 2D correlation length equals the width. To emphasize the fact that there is no finite magnetization in absence of the magnetic field, we study also analytically this case for the ladder with two coupled Ising chains. In presence of the magnetic field, for very weak magnetic fields (of the order 10−8, in reduced units) the magnetization goes from the value one to the value zero in a narrow interval of nonzero temperatures, where also the susceptibility exhibits a very high peak. This narrow interval, increasing the number of chains, is displaced towards higher temperatures. Also, in the case of interchain antiferromagnetic couplings, the formation of interchain spin pairs becomes clear.
The experimental realization of various spin ladder systems has prompted their detailed theoretical investigations. Here we study the evolution of ground-state magnetization with an external magnetic field for two different antiferromagnetic systems: a three-legged spin-1/2 ladder, and a two-legged spin-1/2 ladder with an additional diagonal interaction. The finite system density-matrix renormalization-group method is employed for numerical studies of the three-chain system, and an effective low-energy Hamiltonian is used in the limit of strong interchain coupling to study the two- and three-chain systems. The three-chain system has a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. The two-chain system has a plateau at zero magnetization due to a gap above the singlet ground state. It also has a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization for a certain range of values of the couplings. We study the regions of transitions between plateaus numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong-coupling expansion, by an XXZ spin-1/2 chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the XXZ model. We also study numerically some low-temperature properties of the three-chain system, such as the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat.
At zero temperature, thermal fluctuation is eliminated and phase transitions will occur due to quantum fluctuations that arise from the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Magnetic insulators, described by the Heisenberg model Hamiltonian, are a known class of physical systems that can undergo quantum phase transitions when submitted to a magnetic field. The magnetic field induces the transition by closing energy gaps through the Zeeman effect. Examples of systems that undergo these transitions are the antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain, the antiferromagnetic spin- 1/2 ladder, the ferrimagnetic mixed spin-1 and spin- 1/2 chains and ladders. The presence of a gap in the energy spectrum with zero magnetic field leads to a magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve. We use the density matrix renormalization group to investigate the magnetization curves of the mixed spin-1 and spin- 1/2 ladder, for antiferromagnetic and ferro- magnetic couplings between the ladder legs J⊥. For J⊥ > 0, the ground-state is ferrimagnetic with the total spin equal to 1/3 of the saturation value, in accord with the Lieb-Mattis theorem. The magnetization curve presents a plateau at total magnetization 1/3 of the saturation value, the 1/3-plateau since the ground state has a gap to excitations that increase the total spin by 1 unit. Decreasing J⊥ below zero, the ground state becomes a singlet, but the 1/3-plateau survives down to a critical value J⊥ = Jc. Given that the gap closes with the magnetization fixed, it is a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition type. To determine Jc, we have made a finite-size scale analysis of the plateau width.
We study the quantum critical behavior in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain and two-leg Heisenberg ladder resulting from the application of an external magnetic field. In each of these systems a finite-temperature crossover line between two different ferromagnetic phases ends with a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Using the bond-mean-field theory, we calculate the field dependence of the magnetization and the mean-field spin bond parameters in both systems. For the Heisenberg chain, we recover the existing exact results and show in addition that the saturation of the zero-temperature magnetization at the field hc=2J is accompanied by a quantum phase transition, where the bond parameter vanishes. Here J is the exchange coupling constant along the chain. For the two-leg ladder, we also recover the known results, like the two magnetization plateaus, and show that at the upper critical field, which corresponds to the appearance of the saturation magnetization plateau, the chain and rung spin bond parameters vanish. The identification of the order parameters that govern the field-induced quantum criticality in the systems we study here constitutes an original contribution. Because no long-range order, which breaks symmetry, characterizes the bond order, the latter could be a proposal for the so-called hidden order. We calculate analytically the bond parameters in both systems as functions of the field in the low- and high-field limits at zero temperature. At nonzero temperatures, the calculation of the magnetization and bond parameters is carried out by solving the mean-field equations numerically.
We analyze the phase diagram of a system of spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains interacting through a zig-zag coupling, also called zig-zag ladders. Using bosonization techniques we study how a spin-gap or more generally plateaux in magnetization curves arise in different situations. While for coupled XXZ chains, one has to deal with a recently discovered chiral perturbation, the coupling term which is present for normal ladders is restored by an external magnetic field, dimerization or the presence of charge carriers. We then proceed with a numerical investigation of the phase diagram of two coupled Heisenberg chains in the presence of a magnetic field. Unusual behaviour is found for ferromagnetic coupled antiferromagnetic chains. Finally, for three (and more) legs one can choose different inequivalent types of coupling between the chains. We find that the three-leg ladder can exhibit a spin-gap and/or non-trivial plateaux in the magnetization curve whose appearance strongly depends on the choice of coupling.
We analyze the weak-localization correction to the conductivity of a spinless two-leg ladder model in the limit of strong dephasing ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\ensuremath{\varphi}}\ensuremath{\ll}{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{tr}}$, paying particular attention to the presence of a magnetic field, which leads to an unconventional magnetoresistance behavior. We find that the magnetic field leads to three different effects: (i) negative magnetoresistance due to the regular weak-localization correction, (ii) effective decoupling of the two chains, leading to positive magnetoresistance, and (iii) oscillations in the magnetoresistance originating from the nature of the low-energy collective excitations. All three effects can be observed depending on the parameter range, but it turns out that large magnetic fields always decouple the chains and thus lead to the curious effect of magnetic-field-enhanced localization.
