Abstract

Abstract Specific features of the excitation of a 2D semiconductor nanosystem by non-classical light in a solid state micro-resonator are found under the impact of the Kerr phase nonlinearity in the cavity. Different regimes of excitation are revealed in dependence on the efficiency of the nonlinearity. A negative impact of the nonlinear self-phase modulation on the excitation is found to be compensated by proper choice of the field frequency detuning. The possibility to controllably enhance a certain excitation channel by varying field frequency detuning is demonstrated and the value of the optimal detuning is found analytically. The effect of transfer of non-classical features from the field to the electronic subsystem is revealed. The formation of the photon-like non-classical excitonic states is demonstrated. The obtained results seem to be a basis for the creation of the light–matter interface and development of quantum information algorithms in solid state nanosystems.

Dynamics of Exciton Formation in Planar Nanostructures under the Action of a Quantum Electromagnetic Field under Nonlinearity Conditions

I. A. Tereshchenko, Olga V. Tikhonova

Abstract The features of exciton formation in planar nanostructures under the action of a nonclassical field under the conditions of Kerr phase modulation are analyzed. Excitations of various exciton channels are enhanced or suppressed depending on the nonlinearity magnitude in the system. The possibility of controlling different excitation channels by varying the frequency detuning of the field relative to the resonant transition is demonstrated, and an analytical formula for determining its optimal value is found. The effect of amplification of even excitation channels has been detected, which is caused by correlations of photons under the action of a field in a state of two-mode squeezed vacuum.

Excitation of Semiconductor Nanosystems by Multy-Frequency Quantum Field

I. A. Tereshchenko, Olga V. Tikhonova

Abstract The formation of Frenkel excitons in a 2D semiconductor nanosystem induced by frequency-multimode non-classical electromagnetic field is investigated. Strong sensitivity of excitation dynamics to the initial states of quantum field modes is found. The possibility to manage the excitation dynamics and controllably enhance a certain excitation channel by varying field frequency detuning and by choosing a proper initial state of the non-classical multimode field is demonstrated. The specific features of the excitation arising due to efficient coupling and energy exchange between initially independent field frequency modes are demonstrated. The polarization response of the considered nanosystem on the multi-frequency field impact is studied and its peculiarities arising due to the quantum features of the affecting non-classical light are found.

Peculiarities of interaction of a quantum dot with non-classical light in the self-phase modulation regime

Stepan N. Balybin, Roman V. Zakharov, Olga V. Tikhonova

Abstract Influence of the self-phase modulation of quantum light on the induced resonant excitation of a semiconductor quantum dot is studied analytically in the case of the Kerr-nonlinearity of the medium. The phase nonlinearity is found to result actually in a resonance detuning specific for each field photon number state. This effect is shown to provide significant decrease of the excitation efficiency accompanied at the same time by more regular excitation dynamics obtained even for initial squeezed vacuum field state. The enhancement of entanglement between semiconductor and field subsystems with growing non-linearity is demonstrated. As a result, the formation of different types of non-Gaussian field states is found with features being analyzed in details.

Excitation of semiconductor nanosystems by a few-photon frequency-multimode optical field

I. A. Tereshchenko, Olga V. Tikhonova

Abstract The excitation of a semiconductor quantum nanosystem induced by a frequency-multimode nonclassical electromagnetic field is analytically investigated. The possibility to control the features and dynamics of different excitation channels by varying the weights and initial energy distribution in the considered field spectral modes is demonstrated. Strong coupling between different frequency modes is found to arise due to their interaction with electronic subsystem and is shown to influence dramatically on the excitation. The peculiarities of the excitation process induced by a multi-frequency Schmidt mode, which characterizes spectral distribution of squeezed vacuum light, are revealed. The optimal spectral profile of the Schmidt mode and initial energy distribution of different field spectral components providing the most efficient excitation of a nanosystem are found.

Tunneling induced two-dimensional phase grating in a quantum well nanostructure via third and fifth orders of susceptibility

Azar Vafafard, Mostafa Sahrai, Hamid Reza Hamedi +1 more

We study the nonlinear optical properties in an asymmetric double AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well nanostructure by using an external control field and resonant tunneling effects. It is found that the resonant tunneling can modulate the third-order and fifth-order of susceptibilities via detuning frequency of coupling light. In presence of the resonant tunneling and when the coupling light is in resonance with the corresponding transition, the real parts of third-order and fifth-order susceptibilities are enhanced which are accompanied by nonlinear absorption. However, in off-resonance of coupling light, real parts of third-order and fifth-order susceptibilities enhance while the nonlinear absorption vanishes. We investigate also the two-dimensional electromagnetically induced grating (2D-EIG) of the weak probe light by modulating the third-order and fifth-order susceptibilities. In resonance of coupling light, both amplitude and phase grating are formed in the medium due to enhancement of third-order and fifth-order probe absorption and dispersion. When the coupling light is out of resonance, most of probe energy is transferred from zero-order to higher-order directions due to resonant tunneling effect. The efficiency of phase grating for third-order of susceptibility is higher than phase grating for fifth-order susceptibility. Our proposed model may be useful for optical switching and optical sensors based on semiconductor nanostructures.
