Abstract

We propose a Λ-type superconducting three-energy-level device-based communication system for extremely weak microwave communication scenarios, for example, long-distance deep-space communication. We provide a system diagram and propose the frame synchronization and power estimation approaches based on pre-defined synchronization sequences. Based on the microwave response characteristics of the superconducting three-energy-level system, we further investigate the optimization of synchronization sequence and information symbol modulation. We show that three-energy-level systems with weak Markovianity can be approximated using independent identical distribution methods to obtain optimal synchronization sequences, and the optimal modulation is asymmetric. The proposed system design and optimization approaches are evaluated by numerical results. Moreover, we investigate the performance of the three-energy-level communication system in the presence of interference. Simulation results show that the three-energy-level communication system can tolerate more than 10 dB interference compared to long term evolution (LTE) systems and achieve the same communication rate for the same bandwidth and temperature.

Quantumized Microwave Detection Based on Λ-Type Three-Level Superconducting System: HMM Modeling and Performance Prediction

Junyu Zhang, Chen Gong, Shangbin Li +6 more

We adopt artificial$\Lambda $-type three-level system with superconducting devices for microwave signal detection, where the signal intensity reaches the level of discrete photons instead of continuous waveform. Based on the state transition principles of the three-level system, we propose a statistical model for microwave signal detection. In addition, achievable transmission rates and signal detection based on the proposed statistical models are investigated for low temperature conditions in deep space communication scenario. It is predicted that high sensitivity can be achieved by the proposed system. We further characterize the received signal considering the saturation phenomenon of three-level system, which reveals negligible performance degradation caused by saturation under weak received power regime.

Weak Radio Frequency Signal Reception Sensitivity Based on DC Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices

Shanchi Wu, Chen Gong, Shangbin Li +2 more

Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) are promising for detection of extremely weak power regimes for the Internet of Things and long-distance satellite networks. In low-frequency magnetic signal measurements, it has demonstrated superior performance over the traditional systems. We review the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model of dc SQUIDs and investigate its transfer function to magnetic flux signals while taking thermal fluctuation into account. We numerically evaluate the influence of bias current and bias flux signal to determine the operating parameters of the device. The performances related to SQUID ring inductance operating at 4.2 K and 77 K are demonstrated. Combined with common radio frequency front-end modules, including low-noise amplifier and low-pass filter, we evaluate the bit-error-rate performance of the system under different inductance values and inferred that the sensitivity of the system can reach −99 dBm at 100 MHz bandwidth.

Microwave Communication Under Weak Intensity to Quantumized Level: Recent Progress and Future Challenges

Chen Gong, Shanchi Wu, Chengjie Zuo +9 more

We provide an overview of the recent progresses on the system architecture design and performance prediction for microwave signal detection under weak signal intensity regime, up to quantumized level. The technique roadmap includes two perspectives, the opto-electro-mechanical (OEM) and superconducting devices. For the former one, we first overview the concept of OEM, and then introduce the signal detection based on capacitive-opto-electro-mechanical systems and piezo- opto-electro-mechanical systems. For the latter one, we first overview the concept and architecture of Josephson junction, and then introduce the signal detection based on superconducting Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) experiments and Λ energy-level splitting system. Besides, we review the microwave detection based on Rydberg atom system. We believe that this overview can provide a guidance for future transmission limit, signal processing, detection device fabrication and real experiments.

Quantum phase gate on a single superconducting Λ-type three-level and two superconducting resonators

Liu Chao, Wu Yun-Wen

Quantum phase gate is a necessary quantum component for quantum coding and quantum computing. Compared with the traditional gate circuit, quantum phase gate has the characteristics of unitarity and reversibility. Therefore, we construct a model of mutual coupling between a single Λ -type three-level atom and two superconducting resonators, which is connected by a capacitor. By separately controlling the disconnection time and connection time of the two superconducting resonators in the model as well as by controlling the magnetic flux of the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to make a certain transition energy level of the Λ -type three-level atom equal the relevant resonance energy level, the interaction between the two levels can be achieved and the system can be manipulated. Afterwards, we propose four control schemes for implementing the controlled-Z gate through a three-step operation, and two operation schemes for implementing swap gate through a four-step operation. At the same time, the numerical simulations of fidelity are implemented for the first operation scheme for controlling the Z-gate. The results of fidelity discussion show that the fidelity of this scheme is 96.67% through the running time of 20.83 ns, thus it proves that this scheme is theoretically feasible. The increase in the three attenuation parameters, i.e., attenuation rate, relaxation rate, and phase shift ratio, will reduce the fidelity of the system, while the increase in coupling strength will cut down the time of system operation, thus reducing the influence of attenuation parameters and improving the system fidelity. In this paper we present a quantum phase gate scheme in which two superconducting resonators and a Λ -type three-level atom are coupled with two capacitors. Since the experimental setup is simplified, it is important to reduce the coherence between devices. In addition, the solution has no restriction on the strength of the classic pulse principally, through which the system operates faster and the fidelity of the phase gate is improved effectively.

Tunable asymmetric Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steering of microwave photons in superconducting circuits

Kun Wu, Guangling Cheng, Aixi Chen

We present an alternative scheme for generating the asymmetric steering of microwave photons via using a superconducting circuit system, where a single Δ -type three-level fluxoninum qubit interacts dispersively with three superconducting resonators. The nondegenerate parametric down-conversion occurs among three microwave modes by adiabatically eliminating the atomic variables of the artificial atom, which is responsible for the existence of quantum correlation. Furthermore, the asymmetric steering is easily established with the help of coherent driving of the resonators, and its directionality can be controlled by adjusting the driving strengths to two modes among three modes without additional noise. The scheme we present is based on general quantum operations under conditions of decoherence and nonideal coupling efficiency, and the asymmetric steering of microwave photons is a useful resource for the construction of long-distance quantum communication networks in solid-state systems.
