Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the light drag in an optically dense negative refractive index medium. Our model is a four-level atomic system in which we demonstrate an enhancement of the light drag while keeping the negative refraction condition. Furthermore, we control the shift in the light drag by tuning both the strong coupling field and the detuning. Hence, we observe that the light drag in the negative refractive index material can be controlled to switch from subluminal to superluminal at various ranges of the detuning. Our system suggests a straightforward technique for realizing and controlling light dragging in materials with negative refractive indices, or ‘NRI,’ which might open the way for more efficient use of left-handedness in atomic systems.

Negative refractive index in a four-level atomic system

Zhen-Qing Zhang, Zhengdong Liu, Shun‐Cai Zhao +3 more

A closed four-level system in atomic vapour is proposed, which is made to possess left handedness by using the technique of quantum coherence. The density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the effect of a local field in dense gas. The numerical simulation result shows that the negative permittivity and the negative permeability of the medium can be achieved simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness) in a wider frequency band under appropriate parameter conditions. Furthermore, when analysing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we can find that the probe beam propagation can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal, or vice versa via changing the detuning of the probe field.

We propose a scheme for realizing negative refractive index in a four-level atomic system. It is shown that such a system can simultaneously exhibit negative permittivity and negative permeability in an optical frequency range. Furthermore, by analysing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we find that the probe beam can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal or vice versa via choosing appropriate parameters.

Controllable refractive index in a four-level left-handed medium using pulse shaping

Nadia Boutabba

Abstract In this paper we control the negative refractive index of a four-level left-handed medium by applying different waveforms to excite the atomic system. The control field is a few-cycle strong pulse described by a double exponential function, and its modified forms, a Gaussian field, and a tan-hyperbolic pulse. The considered four-level system was fully analyzed in terms of the density matrix formalism under the rotating wave approximation, and the refractive index for various control fields was obtained. Hence, under specific conditions, the tunneling, and the modulation of the negative refractive index are achieved for various shaped waveforms. Such strong-shaped laser pulses open the way to fully control the system.

Electromagnetically Induced Left Handedness in a V-type Four-level Atomic System

Zheng Juna

A V-type four-level atomic system has been investigated for realizing left handedness. It is shown that the negative refractive index can be achieved not only in the condition of weaker probe field and stronger coupling field, but also in the condition which the probe field and the coupling field are in the same order. The negative refractive index band is enlarged in the situation of stronger probe field and left handedness is enhanced.

Enhanced photon drag in closed-loop quantum systems

Seyedeh Hamideh Kazemi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

Abstract In recent years, photon drag has attracted enormous attention owing to both fundamental and practical interests. In this paper, we investigate dragging effect in quantum systems with closed-loop interaction. First, we demonstrate an enhanced photon drag in a moving atomic medium with a three-level Λ-type structure. By incorporating the interference of spontaneous emissions, the properties of the atomic medium can be easily controlled by the relative phase of applied fields so that a large group index along with a transparency or even a gain can be achieved. As the photon drag is proportional to the group index, the enhancement can be also found in the dragging of light. Such enhanced dragging effect can be applied for the efficient modulators of light, position control, and the detection of slow motion. We then investigate the Fresnel’s light drag effect in another closed-loop structure, i.e. chiral molecules with a cyclic three-level Δ-type configuration, and show that left- and right-handed chiral molecules exhibit different dragging effects. This provides a possible way to probe the molecular chirality, which may find applications in the sorting and separation of chiral molecules.
