Quantum Ising model in a transverse random field: A density-matrix renormalization-group analysis

Aušrius Juozapavičius, S. Caprara, Anders Rosengren

The spin-$1/2$ quantum Ising chain in a transverse random magnetic field is studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization group. The system evolves from an ordered to a paramagnetic state as the amplitude of the random field is increased. The dependence of the magnetization on a uniform magnetic field in the $z$ direction and the spontaneous magnetization as a function of the amplitude of the transverse random magnetic field are determined. The behavior of the spin-spin correlation function both above and at criticality is studied. The scaling laws for magnetization and correlation functions are tested against previous numerical and renormalization-group results.

Spin dynamics and Griffiths singularity in the random quantum Ising magnet PrTiNbO6

Yuesheng Li, Qiaoyi Li, Wei Li +4 more

Abstract In crystalline magnets, interaction randomness is usually thought as a negative factor preventing interesting quantum phenomena to occur. However, intriguing interplay between randomness and quantumness can also leads to unique phenomena in the strongly correlated materials. Among others, the random transverse-field Ising spin chain (RTIC) hosts a renowned quantum Griffiths phase. Although the RTIC model has been regarded as a toy model for long, here we materialize this model with the compound PrTiNbO6, which has a disordered ground state with pronounced quantum fluctuations and continuous spin excitations. The observed anomalous spin dynamics of PrTiNbO6 can be accounted by the RTIC model with a consistent set of parameters determined from fitting the thermodynamic data, and it is ascribed to the quantum Griffiths rare regions in the system. Our results provide a concrete example of quantum Griffiths magnet, and offer an ideal experimental platform for investigating the dynamical properties of random many-body system.

II. Exact solutions of disordered Ising spin chains in a magnetic field

Stephen B. Haley

The one-dimensional Ising model with arbitrary nearest neighbor interactions and a magnetic field is formulated in terms of the spin correlation function relations derived in the preceding article I. The local magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions are shown to satisfy a set of coupled algebraic summation equations. The solution of this set is given in terms of a power series in hyberbolic tangents of the magnetic field strength, for chains of arbitrary length. For cases in which the interaction constants are random variables, explicit expressions are derived for the configurational averaged magnetization and the two-spin correlation functions to the lowest order in the magnetic field.
