Abstract

Quantum computing plays a major role in modern computation. It can perform operations exponentially faster when compared to classical computation. It has applications in various areas like Secure communication, Drug design, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber security, etc. Thus the researchers and students are showing interest to perform experiments in quantum computing to design novel architectures. But to learn/understand quantum computing, one should have strong knowledge of its basics. Because quantum computing performs operations at the atomic level, so the learners need to understand basic concepts like Qubits, Superposition, Quantum gates, etc. Therefore this chapter gives a clear idea about the basic concepts of quantum computing like Qubits, Superposition, Entanglement, Teleportation, and Quantum gates.

Introduction to Quantum Computing

Surya Teja Marella, Hemanth Sai Kumar Parisa

Quantum computing is a modern way of computing that is based on the science of quantum mechanics and its unbelievable phenomena. It is a beautiful combination of physics, mathematics, computer science and information theory. It provides high computational power, less energy consumption and exponential speed over classical computers by controlling the behavior of small physical objects i.e. microscopic particles like atoms, electrons, photons, etc. Here, we present an introduction to the fundamental concepts and some ideas of quantum computing. This paper starts with the origin of traditional computing and discusses all the improvements and transformations that have been done due to their limitations until now. Then it moves on to the basic working of quantum computing and the quantum properties it follows like superposition, entanglement and interference. To understand the full potentials and challenges of a practical quantum computer that can be launched commercially, the paper covers the architecture, hardware, software, design, types and algorithms that are specifically required by the quantum computers. It uncovers the capability of quantum computers that can impact our lives in various viewpoints like cyber security, traffic optimization, medicines, artificial intelligence and many more. At last, we concluded all the importance, advantages and disadvantages of quantum computers. Small-scale quantum computers are being developed recently. This development is heading towards a great future due to their high potential capabilities and advancements in ongoing research. Before focusing on the significances of a general-purpose quantum computer and exploring the power of the new arising technology, it is better to review the origin, potentials, and limitations of the existing traditional computing. This information helps us in understanding the possible challenges in developing exotic and competitive technology. It will also give us an insight into the ongoing progress in this field.

Understanding the Basics of Quantum Computing and Its Impact on Modern Physics

M. Venugopala Rao, M. Krishna Kishore, A. Subba Rao

Quantum computing represents a transformative approach to computation by leveraging the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Unlike classical computing, which operates on bits, quantum computing uses quantum bits or qubits that exist in superposition, enabling parallel processing of information. This paper introduces the foundational concepts of quantum computing—such as superposition, entanglement, and quantum gates—and explores how these principles differ from classical models. Further, it highlights the implications of quantum computing in modern physics, especially in areas like quantum simulation, cryptography, and quantum field theory. By avoiding complex mathematical derivations, this paper aims to make quantum computing accessible to a broader academic audience, emphasizing both theoretical insights and practical impacts.

A Review of Quantum Computing: Fundamental Concepts, Physical Implementations and Future Challenges

L. Sujitha, Y. Ganga Devi

Quantum computing represents a transformative paradigm that exploits the principles of quantum mechanics—superposition, entanglement, and quantum interference—to perform computations beyond the capabilities of classical computers. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts underlying quantum computation, including qubits, quantum gates, quantum algorithms and measurement theory. It further examines major physical implementations of quantum computers, such as superconducting circuits, trapped ions, photonic systems, spin-based qubits, and topological approaches, highlighting their operational principles, advantages, and technological limitations. Key challenges hindering large-scale quantum computation—decoherence, error rates, qubit scalability, and fault tolerance—are critically discussed. Additionally, recent progress in quantum error correction, hybrid quantum–classical algorithms, and hardware optimization is summarized. The review concludes by outlining future research directions and potential applications of quantum computing in cryptography, materials science, optimization, and drug discovery. By integrating theoretical foundations with experimental advancements, this article aims to provide a clear and accessible reference for students, researchers, and scientists entering the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing.

Brief Introduction to Quantum Computing for Undergraduate Students: Lecture Three — Quantum Gates, Quantum Circuits, and Simple Quantum Algorithms

Li Chen

This lecture continues Lectures One and Two, where we introduced the basic concepts of quantum computing and reviewed the essential linear algebra background for undergraduate students. In this lecture, we focus on the basic computational units of quantum computation, known as quantum gates. Quantum gates play a central role in quantum algorithms, as each quantum algorithm can be implemented as a sequence of quantum gate operations. This idea has a close analogy with classical computing, where computations can be represented by Boolean circuits constructed from elementary logic gates. In principle, classical algorithms can be implemented through combinations of such logic gates. To establish this connection, we first review several fundamental logic gates in classical computing, including the AND, OR, and NOT gates. These elementary Boolean gates provide a useful foundation for understanding quantum gates and how classical computational concepts are extended into the quantum domain. In general, a quantum processing unit (QPU), which executes quantum gate operations, can be viewed as the quantum counterpart of a classical central processing unit (CPU), where computations are carried out through logical operations and circuits. This lecture establishes the foundation for understanding the quantum circuit model and for designing and analyzing quantum algorithms in subsequent lectures. To provide a smooth transition to the topics that follow, we also introduce several tiny quantum algorithms and examples in this lecture. These examples illustrate how quantum gates can be combined to perform meaningful computational tasks and prepare students for the more advanced quantum algorithms discussed later.
