In the previous three to four decades, numerical weather and climate modelling have advanced significantly, yet many challenges still exist. Appropriate adaptation techniques to reduce loss of life and property require geographically and temporally targeted predictions. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning (AI and ML) based technologies are improving predictions. However, they are bound by the absence of a hardware's or a software's—or both—capable of handling the enormous data volumes created on a global basis. The burgeoning paradigm of quantum computing (QC) has potential applications across many industries. This review shows that the current progress in quantum ML for quantum computers may lead to technological advancements in climate change research. The subsequent climate forecasting improvements are expected to have several socioeconomic benefits. The authors have also provided three or four examples showing how quantum technology might be used with ML systems to study climate change.

Climate change has become one of the biggest global problems increasingly compromising the Earth's habitability. Recent developments such as the extraordinary heat waves in California & Canada, and the devastating floods in Germany point to the role of climate change in the ever-increasing frequency of extreme weather. Numerical modelling of the weather and climate have seen tremendous improvements in the last five decades, yet stringent limitations remain to be overcome. Spatially and temporally localized forecasting is the need of the hour for effective adaptation measures towards minimizing the loss of life and property. Artificial Intelligence-based methods are demonstrating promising results in improving predictions, but are still limited by the availability of requisite hardware and software required to process the vast deluge of data at a scale of the planet Earth. Quantum computing is an emerging paradigm that has found potential applicability in several fields. In this opinion piece, we argue that new developments in Artificial Intelligence algorithms designed for quantum computers - also known as Quantum Artificial Intelligence (QAI) - may provide the key breakthroughs necessary to furthering the science of climate change. The resultant improvements in weather and climate forecasts are expected to cascade to numerous societal benefits.
Pattern identification for weather and climate research can benefit from quantum machine learning. The issues that will benefit the most from quantum speedup are those that are naturally parallelizable. Future predictions indicate that quantum artificial intelligence will be a potent technology. Computer vision and sequencing algorithms that can be used on powerful quantum computers are among the advancements in the field of quantum artificial intelligence. One component, namely the creation of high performance quantum computing hardware, would be the driving force behind all these developments. For huge N, a quantum processor's simulation capabilities seem to be simply unmatched by their conventional equivalent, which might allow for the resolution of difficult and technologically relevant physics and chemistry problems. Assuming that feasible large -scale devices can be constructed and installed in a reasonable length of time, the objective of quantum computers is not merely to speed up present calculations. Models based on partial differential equations only explicitly resolve physical processes operating at spatial scales greater than the grid size; processes operating at smaller scales, such as clouds and deep convection, are represented by approximate empirical relationships known as parameterizations. It is still unclear i) to what extent quantum computers can offer optimisation advantages over classical algorithms in important applications of interest, and ii) when we can expect to realise such advantages in terms of both hardware and algorithm development. This is true even though optimisation offers a wide range of potential quantum computing applications related to climate change. This review paper analyses the three types of quantum processes that can be used to solve climate issues. Some of them are Quantum Simulation, Quantum Optimization and Quantum Sensing.
