The escalating impacts of climate change and the increasing demand for sustainable development and natural resource management necessitate innovative technological solutions. Quantum computing (QC) has emerged as a promising tool with the potential to revolutionize these critical areas. This review explores the application of quantum machine learning and optimization techniques for climate change prediction and enhancing sustainable development. Traditional computational methods often fall short in handling the scale and complexity of climate models and natural resource management. Quantum advancements, however, offer significant improvements in computational efficiency and problem-solving capabilities. By synthesizing the latest research and developments, this paper highlights how QC and quantum machine learning can optimize multi-infrastructure systems towards climate neutrality. The paper also evaluates the performance of current quantum algorithms and hardware in practical applications and presents realistic cases, i.e., waste-to-energy in anaerobic digestion, disaster prevention in flooding prediction, and new material development for carbon capture. The integration of these quantum technologies promises to drive significant advancements in achieving climate resilience and sustainable development.

Quantum Machine Learning Applications to Address Climate Change

Sagar Lachure, Ashwin Lohidasan, Ashish Tiwari +2 more

In the previous three to four decades, numerical weather and climate modelling have advanced significantly, yet many challenges still exist. Appropriate adaptation techniques to reduce loss of life and property require geographically and temporally targeted predictions. Artificial Intelligence and machine learning (AI and ML) based technologies are improving predictions. However, they are bound by the absence of a hardware's or a software's—or both—capable of handling the enormous data volumes created on a global basis. The burgeoning paradigm of quantum computing (QC) has potential applications across many industries. This review shows that the current progress in quantum ML for quantum computers may lead to technological advancements in climate change research. The subsequent climate forecasting improvements are expected to have several socioeconomic benefits. The authors have also provided three or four examples showing how quantum technology might be used with ML systems to study climate change.

Alessandro Sebastianelli, Francesco Mauro, Amer Delilbasic +7 more

Quantum machine learning (QML) is an emerging interdisciplinary field that employs quantum computing (QC) principles to address complex computational challenges. Traditional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models face major challenges in Earth observation (EO) due to the increasing volume and complexity of data. These challenges include computational intensity, energy consumption, and data management constraints. QML emerges as a promising paradigm for overcoming these barriers through quantum phenomena such as superposition, entanglement, and interference. This review aims at offering a detailed analysis of the state of the art and new trends in QML application to EO. This study methodically examines key advancements in QML for EO (QML4EO) through an exploration of the fundamental concepts of QML. The proposed review methodology involved systematic searches across prominent scientific databases, based on our extensive knowledge on the topic, using carefully formulated queries to ensure broad coverage and high relevance. In addition, this work addresses the changing institutional and geographic environment of QML4EO research, highlighting important centers of contribution and the important role of programs such as the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Quantum Earth Science and Technology (QUEST) Technical Committee. To transform QML from a specialized research area into a complementary and essential tool for advancing EO, this article critically analyzes current limitations and provides an outlook on future directions, highlighting the need for reliable hardware, improved algorithmic design, and standardized protocols.
