Quantum computing is a modern way of computing that is based on the science of quantum mechanics and its unbelievable phenomena. It is a beautiful combination of physics, mathematics, computer science and information theory. It provides high computational power, less energy consumption and exponential speed over classical computers by controlling the behavior of small physical objects i.e. microscopic particles like atoms, electrons, photons, etc. Here, we present an introduction to the fundamental concepts and some ideas of quantum computing. This paper starts with the origin of traditional computing and discusses all the improvements and transformations that have been done due to their limitations until now. Then it moves on to the basic working of quantum computing and the quantum properties it follows like superposition, entanglement and interference. To understand the full potentials and challenges of a practical quantum computer that can be launched commercially, the paper covers the architecture, hardware, software, design, types and algorithms that are specifically required by the quantum computers. It uncovers the capability of quantum computers that can impact our lives in various viewpoints like cyber security, traffic optimization, medicines, artificial intelligence and many more. At last, we concluded all the importance, advantages and disadvantages of quantum computers. Small-scale quantum computers are being developed recently. This development is heading towards a great future due to their high potential capabilities and advancements in ongoing research. Before focusing on the significances of a general-purpose quantum computer and exploring the power of the new arising technology, it is better to review the origin, potentials, and limitations of the existing traditional computing. This information helps us in understanding the possible challenges in developing exotic and competitive technology. It will also give us an insight into the ongoing progress in this field.
ABSTRACT Quantum computing represents a fundamental shift in the way computational problems are approached and solved. Unlike classical computing systems that rely on binary bits to process information, quantum computing utilizes quantum bits, or qubits, which exploit principles of quantum mechanics such as superposition and entanglement. This transition from classical bits to qubits has opened new possibilities for solving complex problems that are computationally infeasible for traditional systems. This paper explores the evolution of computing paradigms from classical architectures to quantum-based models, highlighting the theoretical foundations and technological advancements that have driven this transformation. It discusses the core concepts of quantum computing, including qubit representation, quantum gates, and computational models, along with an overview of current quantum hardware architectures. Furthermore, the paper examines key application areas such as cryptography, optimization, artificial intelligence, and scientific simulations, where quantum computing demonstrates significant potential. Despite its promise, quantum computing faces substantial challenges related to hardware stability, error correction, scalability, and resource requirements, which are also analyzed. Finally, the paper outlines future research directions and the potential impact of quantum computing on next-generation information processing systems, emphasizing its role in redefining the boundaries of modern computation. Quantum computing is changing the way we think about computing. Significant strides in research and development for managing and harnessing the power of quantum systems has been made in recent years, demonstrating the potential for transformative quantum technology. Quantum phenomena like superposition, entanglement, and interference can be exploited to solve issues that are difficult for traditional computers. IBM's first public access to true quantum computers through the cloud, as well as Google's demonstration of quantum supremacy, are among the accomplishments. Besides, a slew of other commercial, government, and academic projects are in the works to create next-generation hardware, a software stack to support the hardware ecosystem, and viable quantum algorithms. This chapter covers various quantum computing architectures including many hardware technologies that are being investigated. We also discuss a variety of challenges, including numerous errors/noise that plague the quantum computers. An overview of literature investigating noise-resilience approaches is also presented.
Based on the rapid development of quantum computing and quantum communication all over the world, this paper studies the latest development of quantum computing on the basis of consulting a large number of literatures. By analyzing literature and summarizing, the basic knowledge and concept of quantum computing, the theory of time and data complexity, quantum computer, and the technical route of quantum computing are studied. Through the research, it is found that quantum computing is still in the primary stage, and the hardware of quantum computing, quantum error correction, anti-noise quantum computing and quantum simulation all need further research to improve quantum theory.
As the power industry's digital transformation accelerates, commercial cryptography as a core technical means to ensure the safe and stable operation of power systems, is facing unprecedented opportunities and challenges. This study focuses on the cryptography application scenarios across the generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, and consumption links of the power industry. It systematically analyzes the technical path for migrating from traditional cryptography applications to post-quantum computing-resistant cryptography applications, explores the implementation scheme of quantum key distribution (QKD) technology in internal communication networks, and discusses the application prospects of privacy-preserving computation technology for data services. The research indicates that the power industry has established a relatively sound commercial cryptography application system. However, against the backdrop of the looming threat of quantum computing, the security of traditional cryptographic algorithms will face severe challenges. By constructing a ‘traditional cryptography-post-quantum computing-resistant cryptography hybrid architecture’, deploying quantum key distribution (QKD) networks, and applying privacy-preserving computation technology for data services, the cryptographic security protection capability of power systems can be significantly enhanced. This study provides theoretical guidance and technical support for the upgrading and transformation of the commercial cryptography protection technology system in the power industry.
