Abstract

  1. The optical Bloch equations predict the lorentzian shape of a hole burnt in the population of atoms by laser light. This hole is related to the exponential echo-signal by the Fourier-transformation Eq.(1) is also used [1] for ultrafast nonexponential dephasing which is usually related to the existence of the phonon side band in an optical spectra.

Optical dephasing in defect-rich crystals

V. Hizhnyakov, P. Reineker

The optical dephasing, caused by vibrational modulation of interactions of optical centers with defects is studied. This mechanism is essential for crystals with a substantial amount of defects, being more efficient at low temperatures than the Raman mechanism, caused by scattering of acoustic phonons at optical centers. A theory is developed, which allows one to find averaged widths and shapes of spectral holes in these systems dependending on the temperature T and concentration c of defects. The shape of the hole is found to be close to a Lorentzian, and at intermediate temperatures its width is proportional to T3, and strongly depends on c (for charged point defects as c8/3).

Many-body theory of Rabi flopping and photon echo in semiconductors

S. W. Koch, Rolf H. Binder, Markus Lindberg

The availability of femtosecond pulses in the optical-frequency regime allows the study of coherent effects in the interaction between semiconductors and light. Because the properties of the exciting pulses become important ingredients in spectroscopy, the theoretical analysis must treat the complete time dependence of the system. For this purpose we use the semiconductor Bloch equations (SBE),1-3 which are the coupled equations of motion for the interband polarization and the electron and hole populations for an interacting electron-hole system in the random-phase approximation. The equations describe the electron-hole Coulomb attraction leading to excitonic features; they contain phasespace filling and band-gap renormalization effects, as well as the dipole interaction with the applied light field.

Ultrafast Dephasing and Incoherent Light Photon Echoes in Organic Amorphous Systems

Ryuzi Yano, Yoshinori Matsumoto, Toshiro Tani +1 more

Incoherent light photon echoes were observed in organic amorphous systems (cresyl violet in polyvinyl alcohol and 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone in polymethacrylic acid) by using temporally-incoherent nanosecond laser pulses. It was found that an echo decay curve of an organic amorphous system is composed of a sharp peak which decays very rapidly and a slowly decaying wing at the tail. We show that the persistent hole burning (PHB) spectra were reproduced by the Fourier-cosine transforms of the echo decay curves. We claim that in general, we must take into account the multi-level feature of the system in order to explain ultrafast dephasing at very low temperatures.

Atomic population inversion in a two-level atom for shaped and chirped laser pulses: Exact solutions of Bloch equations with dephasing

Sofiane Grira, Nadia Boutabba, Hichem Eleuch

We perform a theoretical analysis of the Bloch equations of a two-level atom with dephasing. Exact analytical solutions with two different chirped and time-dependent detuned laser pulses are derived. The atomic population inversion as well as the coherence are explored for different initial populations. We show that the stationary population inversion can be controlled.

Research of hole width and depth on laser duration in spectral hole burning

With the transient solutions of optical Bloch equation the dependences of hole width and depth on the burning pulse duration have been discussed in spectral hole burning of two level system. With a strong and short π pulse ,a deep hole can be burnt mode which width is much narrower than the steady state one predicted by optical bloch equation safficient.
