Optically bistable reflection from a nonlinear multilayer : an exact theory

Abstract

Recently1, an exact theory of the irradiated nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity and the ensuing multistability has been published. In this paper this approach is developed further and an exact treatment for the reflectivity and transmissivity of an optically isotropic structure of dielectric layers characterised by a third-order polarisation tensor at arbitrary angles of incidence is presented. The calculations use exact2 solutions of the nonlinear wave equation, rather than the commonly used ray treatment. This takes into account fully the standing wave effect and permits a precise examination of the interaction between the forward and backward travelling waves and the relationship between the transmissivity resonance condition and changes in the field profile. For an s-polarised incident wave an analytical solution is found for arbitrary angles of incidence and layer thicknesses. It is discovered that for certain ranges of layer thickness the system displays a multivalued response only above a critical angle. This bistability is achieved for irradiances much lower than those reported previously1 for normal incidence and indicates possible applications for optical processing. This plane wave treatment is supplemented by a numerical beam simulation which goes beyond the usual Fresnel approximation by utilising novel boundary conditions which permit the demostration of bistability.

Optical response of a nonlinear dielectric film

Wei Chen, D. L. Mills

We present a theoretical discussion of the optical reflectivity and transmissivity of a dielectric slab of arbitrary thickness, with index of refraction that contains a term proportional to the intensity of the optical wave in the slab. An exact solution is found for the problem, in terms of a single parameter whose value is determined through a straightforward numerical search procedure. We present numerical studies of the power dependence of the transmissivity, with emphasis on bistability, and the multivalued behavior of the transmissivity considered as a function of incident power.

Polarization-induced switching and polarization bistability in nonlinear planar resonators with diffusive nonlinearity

Jan Danckaert, Hugo Thienpont A, Irina P. Veretennicoff

To merge the fields of polarization and nonlinear optics opens wide perspectives. The present work aims at investigating some of them. It is shown, on one hand, that if a nonlinear Fabry- Perot resonator filled with an optically isotropic material is addressed by an obliquely incident beam, the transmitted irradiance can switch from an up to a down state (or the reverse) if its polarization is properly modulated. If on the other hand the nonlinear cavity is filled with a linearly birefringent material, polarization optical bistability can occur, even at normal incidence. This polarization bistability can arise both by modulating the incident irradiance and by modulating the incident polarization. Optical bistability of the transmitted irradiance can also be induced by the modulation of the polarization of the incident beam. All these features provide new tools for parallel digital optical information processing.

Dispersive bistability in coupled nonlinear Fabry–Perot resonators

S. Dutta Gupta, G. S. Agarwal

The transmission properties of coupled nonlinear Fabry–Perot resonators with reflection coatings are studied. A general characteristic matrix approach for nonlinear layered media is developed for the case of normal incidence of linearly polarized light. Use of reflection coatings and coupled systems results in the lowering of the bistability threshold.

Optical bistability in the light reflection from photorefractive crystals

N. S. Petrov, A. B. Zimin

The rigorous solution in the plane-wave approximation of the light reflection boundary problem for the interface the isotropic medium - photorefractive crystal with the drift- diffusion nonlinearity mechanism is given. The possibility of the realization of the hysteresis light reflection phenomenon in this case under certain conditions is shown. The analytical expressions describing hysteresis behavior of the reflectivity as a function of the angle of incidence or that of the external electric field strength applied to the crystal are derived. By changing the value and sign of the applied electric field it is possible to transfer system from the total reflection state to the transmission state and vice versa. The obtained results are attractive for the elaboration of the possible devices for laser radiation control and optical information processing.

A Model of Optical Bistability and Polarisation Evolution in Birefringent χ(2)Nonlinear Media

Waldemar Jęda, Andrzej Zagorski

We present a model calculation of optical bistability and polarisation evolution in optically birefringent media based on the interaction of three waves.Second-order optical nonlinearity (described by the third rank susceptibility tensor) is assumed to be dominant.A bistable light transmission is analysed in terms of standard Fabry-Perot model of feedback, and is a direct consequence of the results obtained for a semi-infinite medium.A second effect considered in the paper is evolution of polarisation state of the waves involved in these processes. We derived a closed formula for intensity-dependent refractive index, which corresponds to that used in the case of third-order nonlinear media. As a result, we calculated both intensity • and Stokes parameters of transmitted light.

Optical Bistability from Ferroelectric Fabry-Perot Interferometer

Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, David Reginald Tilley, Junaidah Osman

We study the nonlinear optical bistability and multistability of a nonlinear ferroelectric (FE) Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer assumed coated with partial dielectric mirrors on its interfaces. The FE material is considered to have an intensity-dependent refractive index where the third order nonlinear susceptibility χ ilmn (3) acts like Kerr coefficient. The nonlinear response of the FE medium is modeled by the Landau-Khalatnikov (LK) dynamical equation. Within a single frequency approximation, the nonlinear wave equation is written in terms of polarization P rather than the electric field E as the dependent variable. The resulting nonlinear polarization equation is numerically integrated across the FP film using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The behavior of the resulting polarization and transmission as a function of the field input intensity is investigated.
