Abstract

We present a detailed analysis of the parametric interaction between a strong and a weak coherent beam with a varying mixture of extraordinary and ordinary rays in nonlinear birefringent media, such as liquid crystals and photorefractive crystals. Through the induced refractive-index changes associated with scalar parameters, such as temperature and space-charge density, the e- and o-rays are energetically coupled, leading to beam amplification and polarization-switching effects. We present the explicit conditions for observing these effects and a detailed analysis of the feasibility of doing so based on experimental data on liquid crystals.

Coherent-beam amplification and polarization switching in a birefringent medium-photorefractive crystal

I. C. Khoo, Y. Liang, Haorong Li

A recent theory of polarization switching and beam amplification effect in Kerr-like media is extended to birefringent photorefractive crystals. In this class of material, the birefringence allows a new mechanism for coherent nonlinear mixing effects among the extraordinary and ordinary waves, leading to amplification and polarization switching effects. Analytic solutions of the parametric equations governing these interacting waves are solved for both the phase-matched and phase-mismatched geometries. The authors also present an experimental confirmation of the predicted polarization switching effect.>

Optical amplification and polarization switching in a birefringent nonlinear optical medium: An analysis

I. C. Khoo

In birefringent nonlinear optical media, it is shown that phase-matched wave-mixing processes occur naturally among the extraordinary and ordinary wave components of a strong pump and a weak probe beam. The necessary and sufficient conditions that these parametric processes may lead to amplification and or polarization switching of the probe beam are quantitatively analyzed.

Stationary equal-frequency two-wave mixing with gain in a bipolar birefringent nonlinear medium

I. C. Khoo, Nelson V. Tabiryan

In a bipolar birefringent nonlinear medium, such as nematic liquid crystals, stationary degenerate two-wave mixing between a weak probe beam and a strong pump beam can occur. This leads to strong amplification of the probe beam. In our analytical calculations, the general conditions for observing these effects and specific conditions pertaining to nematic liquid crystals are explicitly described.

Optical Bistability of a Nematic Liquid Crystal with Photorefractively Amplified Feedback

M. Ingold, K. Totland, Gilles Pauliat +2 more

Light induced changes of the refractive index in a nematic liquid crystal [1] and in a photorefractive crystal (KNbO3) [2] have been used to design an optically bistable device [3]. In the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) light can reorient biréfringent molecules. Therefore the NLC, placed between crossed polarizers, acts as an optically controlled gate. In the KNbO3 crystal photorefractive two-beam coupling is used for light amplification.

Increase of mutual coherence of light beams in two-wave interaction in photorefractive crystals

Two-wave mixing allows one to change effectively Intensities, phases, space profiles, polarizations and time evolution of interacting beams [1,21. We will show, that two-wave mixing of partially coherent beams may be used to increase degree of coherence of these beams. The physics of the effect under discussion is as follows: two partially coherent beams write a refraction index grating in a nonlinear medium whose position and profile are practically stationary. Scattering of strong beam on this grating in the direction of the weak one means that this weak beam acquires an addition, that is coherent with the strong beam, thereby increasing degree of coherence of the beams. Similar effects were discussed in connection with scattering of different frequency components at the common running grating [3] and with Interaction of different polarization components [4,5].

Coherent light amplification with photorefractive crystals may be a consequence of several frequency degenerate (or nearly degenerate) processes of nonlinear wave mixing : It appears for two- beam coupling in the crystals with diffusion-driven charge transport [1] or transport via circular photovoltaic currents [2].
