Stationary equal-frequency two-wave mixing with gain in a bipolar birefringent nonlinear medium

Abstract

In a bipolar birefringent nonlinear medium, such as nematic liquid crystals, stationary degenerate two-wave mixing between a weak probe beam and a strong pump beam can occur. This leads to strong amplification of the probe beam. In our analytical calculations, the general conditions for observing these effects and specific conditions pertaining to nematic liquid crystals are explicitly described.

Two Wave Mixings with Nematic Liquid Crystal Film

We have observed for the first time amplification of a weak probe beam by a strong pump beam via two and four wave mixing process, the effect occurs if one of the beams is frequency shifted or by moving the film.

Probe beam amplification via two- and four-wave mixings in a nematic liquid crystal film

Iam Choon Khoo, T. Liu

We have observed very large probe beam gain (up to 600 percent) in a thin film (100 μm) of nematic liquid crystal for a low pump beam intensity on the order of 2 W/cm2. The effect is nonlinearly dependent on the pump intensity and the wave mixing angle.

Theory and experiments on stationary degenerate and nearly degenerate optical wave mixing and ring oscillation in a Kerr-like medium

I. C. Khoo, Francesco F. Simoni, G. Cipparrone +2 more

Further theoretical observations and a new analysis of stationary degenerate and nearly degenerate optical wave mixing effects in a Kerr-like nonlinear medium are presented. The effects of phase modulations, beam ratio, intensity, wave mixing angle and frequency differences and other physical and optical parameters in multiwave mixing mediated probe gain and their application in ring oscillation devices are analyzed in detail. New experimental studies of the intensity and the angular dependence of the probe beam amplification and side diffractions in liquid crystal provide further insights into the phenomena.

Optical amplification and polarization switching in a birefringent nonlinear optical medium: An analysis

I. C. Khoo

In birefringent nonlinear optical media, it is shown that phase-matched wave-mixing processes occur naturally among the extraordinary and ordinary wave components of a strong pump and a weak probe beam. The necessary and sufficient conditions that these parametric processes may lead to amplification and or polarization switching of the probe beam are quantitatively analyzed.

Probe Beam Amplification Via Two and Four Wave Mixing in a Kerr-Like (Liquid Crystal) Medium

Iam Choon Khoo, T. H. Liu

Probe beam amplification in a Kerr-like medium, e.g. a nematic liquid crystal film via 2-wave mixing is possible if it is stoke shifted relative to the pump beam. We report experiment observation of this effect and contribution from other multi-wave mixing effects.

Theory and experiments on multiwave-mixing-mediated probe-beam amplification

I. C. Khoo, T. H. Liu

In a highly nonlinear thin film, the presence of the diffracted beams from the pump-probe-beam-induced refractive-index grating modifies considerably the energy coupling between the pump and the probe beams. Using coupled amplitude and phase equations, the roles of various factors such as phases and phase shifts, phase modulations, pump-beam intensity, intensity ratio, interaction length, and losses in the medium in the multiwave-mixing processes are clearly identified. We also present experimental results on the dependence of the probe gain on the pump-probe-beam ratio, the pump intensity, and on the interaction length, using a nematic liquid-crystal film as the nonlinear medium.
