Abstract

The quantum statistical equations for the field produced in the process of second-harmonic generation (SHG) are expressed, based on a method proposed for four-wave mixing.1 We start from the following assumptions: 1) the field absorption in the nonlinear medium may be neglected; 2) the amplitude of the fundamental field is much greater than that of the SH field; 3) the Wigner function associated with the density operator of the field depends significantly only on the variables of the SH field. The coefficients of the Fokker–Planck equation thus obtained depend on the Laplace transforms of the correlation functions of the atomic polarization operator. The moments of the Wigner function2 are related to the moments of the SH field photon number; consequently, we impose the condition for sub-Poissonian photon-statistics and derive the corresponding relationships satisfied by the atomic correlation functions. A numerical interpretation is given.

Squeezing and Sub-Poissonian Effects of Light in Third Harmonic Generation

R. Pratap, Dilip Kumar Giri, A. Prasad

The squeezing and sub-Poissonian eects of light in third harmonic generation are investigated based on the fully quantum mechanical approach up to the rst order Hamiltonian interaction in gt, where g is the coupling constant between the modes per second and t is the interaction time between the waves during the process in a nonlinear medium. The coupled Heisenberg equations of motion involving real and imaginary parts of the quadrature operators are established. The occurrence of amplitude squeezing eects in both the quadratures of the radiation eld in the fundamental mode is investigated and found to be dependent on the selective phase values of the eld amplitude. The photon statistics of the pump mode in this process have also been investigated and found to be sub-Poissonian in nature. It is shown that for particular phase values the amplitude squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics of light occur simultaneously. It is observed that there is no possibility to produce squeezed light in the harmonic mode up to rst-order interaction in gt.Further, it is found that the normal squeezing in the harmonic mode directly depends upon the amplitude-cubed squeezing of the initial pump eld to the case of second-order interaction in gt.This gives a method of converting higher-order (amplitude-cubed) squeezing of the fundamental mode into normal squeezing of the harmonic mode and vice versa.

Second harmonic generation in the positive P-representation

G. S. Holliday, Surendra Singh

Equation of motion for the density operator of the field in the process of second harmonic generation is converted into a Fokker-Planck equation by using the positive P-representation of the density operator. This Fokker-Planck equation is replaced by a set of four coupled stochastic differential equations using the Ito interpretation. The statistics of the light field are studied by numerically solving these stochastic equations. For long interaction times substantial antibunching and squeezing are possible in principle.

Semi-classical Limit of Chaos and Quantum Noise in Second Harmonic Generation

Michael Dörfle, R. Graham

Second harmonic generation and subharmonic generation in a cavity are described by the usual master equation (1) for the statistical operator of the system of two modes (fundamental and second harmonic). The master equation is equivalent to a partial differential equation for the Wigner function which is a generalized Fokker-Planck equation involving partial derivatives of the first, second and third order (2). In the semi-classical limit the third order derivatives are negligible and the Wigner distribution satisfies the Fokker-Planck equation equivalent to the Langevin equation with the formally classical Gaussian white noise ξ1, ξ2 with the only non-vanishing correlation coefficients β1, β2 are the mode amplitudes (normalized to photon numbers), g is the coupling constant, Δ1, 2 the frequency mismatch, x is the damping rate, Fp the amplitude of the pump field.

Quantum-statistical theory of the growth and stabilization of fields in a two-photon medium with competing nonlinear processes

G. S. Agarwal, Frank Rattay

We formulate a quantum-statistical theory of the generation of the fields in a two-photon medium in which several competing nonlinear processes such as four-wave mixing, two-photon absorption, and amplified spontaneous emission are taking place. We derive the equation for the density matrix of the generated fields. We give numerical results for the time-dependent solutions, which enable us to understand the growth and stabilization of the fields in such a medium. We show the generation of new types of the coherent states of the radiation field. Our analysis shows that the generated fields, both in transient and the steady-state domain, have very striking quantum properties leading to squeezing, sub-Poissonian statistics, and violations of Cauchy-Schwarz inequalities. Wherever possible we compare our results with the experiment of Malcuit et al. and the semiclassical theory of Boyd et al.

Photon statistics of degenerate two-photon laser

Z Wang

Starting from the master equation for density operator of the atoms and the field mode and applying the operator method of adiabatic elimination of the atomio variables developed by Haake and Lewenstein, we derived the Fokker-Planck Equation for Wigner function of the lightfield and its steady-state solution. With a Gaussian approximation to the solution, analytical and numerical results on the photon statistics for various pumping strengths are obtained. Comparisons with previous works are made.

Higher-order sub-Poissonian photon statistics in terms of factorial moments

Daniel B. Erenso, Reeta Vyas, Surendra Singh

We introduce the concept of higher-order super-Poissonian and sub-Poissonian statistics and show that higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics is a signature of a nonclassical field. Fields generated in intracavity second-harmonic generation and single-atom resonance fluorescence are shown to exhibit higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics.
