Photon superposition states in a cavity through adiabatic transfer of Zeeman coherence

Abstract

We propose a novel scheme to prepare Fock states and photon superposition states in a cavity. It is based on the fact that the ground state Zeeman coherence of an atom which is passed through a cavity can be transferred on-to-one to a (coherent) superposition of photon number states of the cavity mode.

Synthesis of arbitrary quantum states via adiabatic transfer of Zeeman coherence

A. S. Parkins, P. Marte, P. Zoller +1 more

A scheme for the preparation of general coherent superpositions of photon-number states is proposed. By strongly coupling an atom to a cavity field, atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence can be transferred by (coherent) adiabatic passage to the cavity mode and a general field state can be generated without atomic projection noise.

Photon-number-state generation with a single two-level atom in a cavity: a proposal

P. Domokos, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond +2 more

A single two-level atom can be used to prepare an arbitrary photon number state (Fock state) in a high Q cavity . The atom undergoes a controlled succession of interactions with two cavity modes. One of them contains a coherent field. The atom transfers photons one by one from this field to the initially empty second mode. The scheme can be extended to prepare a quantum superposition of the vacuum with a Fock state, a highly non-classical situation. We discuss the feasibility of the experiment with our present Rydberg-atom cavity QED set-up.

Coherent superposition of Fock states via adiabatic passage using a four-level atom

Shangqing Gong, Jin Shi-Qi, Shuguang Zhang +2 more

The behavior of a four-level atom-cavity system is investigated. It is shown that because of a control field, the superposition of Fock states can be prepared, even the cavity is initially not in vacuum state.

Cavity-state preparation using adiabatic transfer

Jonas Larson, Erika Andersson

We show how to prepare a variety of cavity field states for multiple cavities. The state preparation technique used is related to the method of stimulated adiabatic Raman passage. The cavity modes are coupled by atoms, making it possible to transfer an arbitrary cavity field state from one cavity to another and also to prepare nontrivial cavity field states. In particular, we show how to prepare entangled states of two or more cavities, such as an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen state and a $W$ state, as well as various entangled superpositions of coherent states in different cavities, including Schr\"odinger cat states. The theoretical considerations are supported by numerical simulations.

Quantum-state mapping between multilevel atoms and cavity light fields

A. S. Parkins, P. Marte, P. Zoller +2 more

A scheme for the preparation of Fock states and general superposition states of the electromagnetic field in a cavity is studied in detail. The scheme uses adiabatic passage in a strongly coupled atom-cavity system to ``map'' atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence onto the cavity-mode field. We model photon-counting and homodyne measurements of the field exiting the cavity and demonstrate the possibility of generating and detecting highly nonclassical states of the field parameter values close to currently realizable experimental values. The adiabatic passage process is also reversible, enabling cavity-mode fields to be mapped onto atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence. Application of this property to the measurement of cavity fields is discussed, with particular consideration given to a possible scheme for quantum measurements of the intracavity photon number.

Generation of coherent superposition of Fock states in a cavity. Entanglement of atomic coherent states

M. Khanbekyan

A scheme for preparation of coherent superposition of Fock states of electromagnetic field is constructed. The superposition state is created inside the cavity via a strong interaction of a four-level atom with quantum field of the cavity and classic laser fields. We demonstrate the possibility to create desired arbitrary superposition of the cavity Fock states just by changing the relative delay of the fields. Then, as another application of our model, we study a means of creating entanglement of neutral four-level atoms using different sequences of interactions with the cavity and laser fields.
