Dynamical generation and transfer of nonclassical states in strongly interacting light-matter systems in cavities

Ilia Tutunnikov, Vasil Rokaj, Jianshu Cao +1 more

Abstract We propose leveraging strong and ultrastrong light-matter coupling to efficiently generate and exchange nonclassical light and quantum matter states. Two initial conditions are considered: (a) a displaced quadrature-squeezed matter state, and (b) a coherent state in a cavity. In both scenarios, polaritons mediate the dynamical generation and transfer of nonclassical states between light and matter. By monitoring the dynamics of both subsystems, we uncover the emergence of cavity-induced beatings in the collective matter oscillations. The beating period depends on the particle density through the vacuum Rabi splitting and peaks sharply under light-matter resonance conditions. For initial condition (a), nonclassicality is efficiently transferred from matter to photons under strong and ultrastrong coupling. However, for initial condition (b), nonclassical photonic states are generated only in the ultrastrong coupling regime due to the counter-rotating terms, highlighting the advantages of ultrastrong coupling. Furthermore, in the ultrastrong coupling regime, distinctive asymmetries relative to cavity detuning emerge in dynamical observables of both light and matter. The nonclassical photons can be extracted through a semi-transparent cavity mirror, while nonclassical matter states can be detected via time-resolved spectroscopy. This work highlights that polariton states may serve as a tool for dynamically generating and transferring nonclassical states, with potential applications in quantum technology.

Rydberg matter: properties and decay

Edward A. Manykin, Michael I. Ojovan, Pavel P. Poluektov

Rydberg matter is a condensed excited state made of highly excited atoms. State of art of research in the field of Rydberg matter is briefly reviewed. Special attention is focused on the contribution of Russian and Swedish scientists' groups to the analysis of this problem. Most attention is concentrated on physical principles of pseudopotential method and density functional theory used to describe the Rydberg matter. The description of Rydberg matter as an excited state becomes viable after the formal replacement of excited atoms by ground state pseudoatoms. This procedure has been used to find parameters of Rydberg matter made of highly excited cesium atoms. Theoretical estimations conform to experimental data available.

Heralded ultrafast generation of macroscopic quantum states in matter with bright squeezed vacuum light

Shohei Imai

We show that bright squeezed vacuum light, combined with a single-shot quadrature measurement of the post-interaction light, enables the ultrafast generation of macroscopic quantum states in matter. Although in the weak-coupling regime multiphoton quantum light leaves the unconditional matter state as a classical mixture due to light--matter entanglement, quadrature-based heralding prepares the matter in a Gaussian-weighted quantum superposition of laser-driven matter states. For an ensemble of resonantly electric-dipole-coupled two-level systems, this heralding dynamics acts as a Gaussian filter with respect to the electric polarization, with brighter squeezed-vacuum light accelerating the preparation of the zero-eigenvalue Dicke state. Counter-rotating terms further drive a stroboscopic transition from this Dicke state to a cat-like state. Our results open a route to ultrafast engineering of macroscopic quantum matter with strong-field quantum light.

Preparing multi-partite entanglement of photons and matter qubits

Kok, P, S. D. Barrett, Spiller, T P

We show how to make event-ready multi-partite entanglement between qubits which may be encoded on photons or matter systems. Entangled states of matter systems, which can also act as single photon sources, can be generated using the entangling operation presented in quant-ph/0408040. We show how to entangle such sources with photon qubits, which may be encoded in the dual rail, polarization or time-bin degrees of freedom. We subsequently demonstrate how projective measurements of the matter qubits can be used to create entangled states of the photons alone. The state of the matter qubits is inherited by the generated photons. Since the entangling operation can be used to generate cluster states of matter qubits for quantum computing, our procedure enables us to create any (entangled) photonic quantum state that can be written as the outcome of a quantum computer.
