Abstract

Abstract We obtain the power and Ω-function of one-qubit Agrawal quantum heat engines solving the Lindbland equation and using the tools of Finite Time Thermodynamics. We prove that these two thermodynamic functions have their maximum values for efficiencies different to zero and the Carnot efficiency. Finally, analyzing the high temperature limit of AQHEs we discover the range of temperatures for which the quantum behaviour is valid.

Optimization of energy production in two-qubit heat engines using the ecological function

J J Fernández

Abstract We study the ecological regime of quantum heat engines where the heat transfer between the environment and the engine is mediated with two qubits that act as energy filters and allow the conversion of heat into work. Using quantum thermodynamics, the theory of open quantum system and the fundamentals of finite-time thermodynamics we obtain the output power, the ecological function and the entropy production of the engine. Then, we optimize the functioning to the ecological function to find the range of efficiencies for which the system works optimally under the ecological criterium. We find that (i) the maximum value of the ecological function depends on the thermal copulings and the energies of the qubits that define the engine. (ii) We can define an ecological working region where the engine works producing a power that is similar to the maximum power but where it rejects much less heat to the environment. (iii) That the range of efficiencies defining the ecological region depends on the parameters defining the engine.(iv) An optimal working region where both the power and the ecological function are big is defined for each machine.

Finite-time thermodynamic process of a two-level quantum heat engine

Yigermal Bassie, Tibebe Birhanu, Yoseph Abebe +1 more

In this paper, we consider a model of two-level quantum heat engine to investigate the explicit analytic expression for the thermodynamics quantities in different condition under the finite-time operation. In this engine, the working substance is composed of a spin-half particles immersed in a magnetic field. The finite-time thermodynamic processes consisting of two quantum adiabatic and two quantum isothermal processes. This processes working between two heat reservoirs with an inverse temperatures $β_{1}$ and $β_{2}$ ($<β_{1}$). In this processes, we obtain the work, heat, power and efficiency at maximum power output of the model. Our result of the efficiency at maximum power agree with the universal value in the first order of Carnot efficiency.

Efficiency at maximum power output of quantum heat engines under finite-time operation

Jianhui Wang, Jizhou He, Zhaoqi Wu

We study the efficiency at maximum power, ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{m}$, of irreversible quantum Carnot engines (QCEs) that perform finite-time cycles between a hot and a cold reservoir at temperatures ${T}_{h}$ and ${T}_{c}$, respectively. For QCEs in the reversible limit (long cycle period, zero dissipation), ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{m}$ becomes identical to the Carnot efficiency ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{{}_{C}}=1\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c}/{T}_{h}$. For QCE cycles in which nonadiabatic dissipation and the time spent on two adiabats are included, the efficiency ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{m}$ at maximum power output is bounded from above by ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{{}_{C}}/(2\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{{}_{C}})$ and from below by ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{{}_{C}}/2$. In the case of symmetric dissipation, the Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{{}_{\mathit{CA}}}=1\ensuremath{-}\sqrt{{T}_{c}/{T}_{h}}$ is recovered under the condition that the time allocation between the adiabats and the contact time with the reservoir satisfy a certain relation.

Power and efficient power optimization of one-qubit Novikov quantum heat engines with an external dissipative heat leak

Julio Juan Fernández

Abstract We optimize one-qubit Novikov quantum heat engines with a dissipative heat leak using the formalisms of open-system Quantum Mechanics and the Finite-Time Thermodynamics. We show that the leak changes the power-efficiency and the efficient-power-efficiency curves, reduces the maximum efficiency of the machine and does not change its power. We also discuss the effects of the leak on the power that is rejected from the machine to the environment. Finally, we study the high-temperature limit to check that the engine reduces in this limit to a classic Novikov heat engine.

Finite-power performance of quantum heat engines in linear response

Qin Liu, Jizhou He, Yong-li Ma +1 more

We investigate the finite-power performance of quantum heat engines working in the linear response regime where the temperature gradient is small. The engine cycles with working substances of ideal harmonic systems consist of two heat transfer and two adiabatic processes, such as the Carnot cycle, Otto cycle, and Brayton cycle. By analyzing the optimal protocol under maximum power we derive the explicitly analytic expression for the irreversible entropy production, which becomes the low dissipation form in the long duration limit. Assuming the engine to be endoreversible, we derive the universal expression for the efficiency at maximum power, which agrees well with that obtained from the phenomenological heat transfer laws holding in the classical thermodynamics. Through appropriate identification of the thermodynamic fluxes and forces that a linear relation connects, we find that the quantum engines under consideration are tightly coupled, and the universality of efficiency at maximum power is confirmed at the linear order in the temperature gradient.

Optimal operation of a three-level quantum heat engine and universal nature of efficiency

Varinder Singh

We present a detailed study of a three-level quantum heat engine operating at maximum efficient power function, a trade-off objective function defined by the product of the efficiency and power output of the engine. The efficient power function represents a trade-off between the power output and efficiency of a heat engine.Engines working in the maximum efficient power regime operate at finite power, with finite efficiency lying in between the regimes of maximum power and maximum efficiency (Carnot efficiency).First, for near-equilibrium conditions, we find a general expression for the efficiency and establish the universal nature of efficiency at maximum power and maximum efficient power. Then in the high-temperature limit, optimizing with respect to one parameter while constraining the other one, we obtain the lower and upper bounds on the efficiency for both strong as well as weak matter-field coupling conditions.Except for the weak matter-field coupling condition, the obtained bounds on the efficiency exactly match with the bounds already known for some models of classical heat engines.Further for weak matter-field coupling, we derive some new bounds on the efficiency of the engine which lie beyond the range covered by bounds obtained for strong matter-field coupling. We conclude by comparing the performance of our three-level quantum heat engine in maximum power and maximum efficient power regimes and show that the engine operating at maximum efficient power produces at least 88.89% of the maximum power output while considerably reducing the power loss due to entropy production. Finally, to complete our analysis, we review the experimental setup of a recently realized effective three-level quantum engine.
