High-dimensional spin-orbital single-photon sources

Yinhui Kan, Xujing Liu, Shailesh Kumar +4 more

Hybrid integration of solid-state quantum emitters (QEs) into nanophotonic structures opens enticing perspectives for exploiting multiple degrees of freedom of single-photon sources for on-chip quantum photonic applications. However, the state-of-the-art single-photon sources are mostly limited to two-level states or scalar vortex beams. Direct generation of high-dimensional structured single photons remains challenging, being still in its infancy. Here, we propose a general strategy to design highly entangled high-dimensional spin-orbital single-photon sources by taking full advantage of the spatial freedom to design QE-coupled composite (i.e., Moiré/multipart) metasurfaces. We demonstrate the generation of arbitrary vectorial spin-orbital photon emission in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces, mapping the generated states on hybrid-order Bloch spheres. We further realize single-photon sources of high-dimensional spin-orbital quantum emission and experimentally verify the entanglement of high-dimensional superposition states with high fidelity. We believe that the results obtained facilitate further progress in integrated solutions for the deployment of next-generation high-capacity quantum information technologies.

Spin-orbit hybrid entanglement of photons and quantum contextuality

Ebrahim Karimi, Jonathan Leach, Sergei Slussarenko +7 more

We demonstrate electromagnetic quantum states of single photons and of correlated photon pairs exhibiting ``hybrid'' entanglement between spin and orbital angular momentum. These states are obtained from entangled photon pairs emitted by spontaneous parametric down conversion by employing a $q$ plate for coupling the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of a photon. Entanglement and contextual quantum behavior (that is also nonlocal, in the case of photon pairs) is demonstrated by the reported violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. In addition, a classical analog of the hybrid spin-orbit photonic entanglement is reported and discussed.

Hybrid entanglement swapping of photons: Creating the orbital angular momentum Bell states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states

Lixiang Chen, Weilong She

Twisted photons offer a high-dimensional Hilbert space with the degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Entanglement swapping allows entangling photons that never interact. We report in this paper the hybrid entanglement swapping from multiphoton spin-entangled states to multiphoton OAM entangled states with the aid of $N$-pair hybrid spin-OAM entangled photons. Our scheme provides a feasible method for creating the two-photon OAM Bell states $(N=2)$ or multiphoton multidimensional OAM Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states $(N\ensuremath{\ge}3)$. We highlight the advantage of multiparticle, multidimensional entangled states in some applications of quantum information protocols.
