Abstract

Twisted photons offer a high-dimensional Hilbert space with the degree of freedom of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Entanglement swapping allows entangling photons that never interact. We report in this paper the hybrid entanglement swapping from multiphoton spin-entangled states to multiphoton OAM entangled states with the aid of $N$-pair hybrid spin-OAM entangled photons. Our scheme provides a feasible method for creating the two-photon OAM Bell states $(N=2)$ or multiphoton multidimensional OAM Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states $(N\ensuremath{\ge}3)$. We highlight the advantage of multiparticle, multidimensional entangled states in some applications of quantum information protocols.

Entangled W state of multi degree of freedom system based on orbital angular momentum

Fan Rong-Hua, Banghong Guo, Guo Jian-Jun +3 more

We propose a method of generating the three-photon W state. The method uses parametric down-conversion process and hybrid entanglement swapping from multiphoton spin-entangled states to multiphoton orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states, with the aid of a pair of polarization photons. They generate W state entangled in different degrees of freedom of polarization and OAM with a high-dimensional Hilbert space. By simply changing the methods of generating a polarization-OAM-linear momentum entangled W state. Our method produces two mutually symmetric W states with strong entanglement and high dimension, which is expected to realize the secure communication of extending quantum bits.

Entanglement of very high orbital angular momentum

Robert Fickler, Peizhe Li, Radek Łapkiewicz +5 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of single photons represents a new optical degree of freedom for the entanglement of photons [1,2]. One physical realization of OAM carrying light beams are the so called Laguerre-Gaussian modes of light with the required helical phase structure. One big advantage over the well known polarization degree of freedom is the possibility of realizing entanglement between two photons with very high quantum numbers. However, the creation of photonic OAM entanglement using the widely used spontaneous parametric downconversion process is limited by the strongly reduced efficiency for higher momenta [3]. We have realized a novel method to create entanglement between two photons with a very high difference in their OAM quantum number and momentum respectively. Furthermore we have explored hybrid entanglement of photons in the OAM and polarization degree of freedom.

Spin-orbit-path hybrid Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement and open-destination teleportation with multiple degrees of freedom

Lixiang Chen, Weilong She

We propose a scheme to generate hybrid Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entanglement where multiple photons are entangled in different degrees of freedom of spin, orbital angular momentum (OAM), and path (linear momentum). The generation involves mapping the preliminary OAM entanglement of photon pairs onto their spin-orbit and spin-path degrees of freedom, respectively. Based on the hybrid GHZ entanglement, we demonstrate an open-destination teleportation with multiples degrees of freedom, via which a spin state of a single photon is teleported onto a superposition of multiple photons with the postselection technique and the original information could be read out at any photon in individual spin, OAM, or the linear-momentum state. Our scheme holds promise for asymmetric optical quantum network.

Quantum entanglement of orbital angular momentum

Martin P. van Exter, E. R. Eliel, J. P. Woerdman

Introduction In this chapter, we will be concerned with entangled states of light. Historically, quantum states of light, i.e., photons, have played a dominant role in the experimental study of quantum entanglement. For instance, the first Bell tests and the first realizations of quantum teleportation were performed using two-dimensional polarization-entangled twophoton states [3]. From an experimental point of view these states are readily prepared and manipulated using conventional polarization optics. Recently, however, both theoretical and experimental efforts have shifted towards entanglement in more than two modes , which is often referred to as high-dimensional entanglement. This is much richer than two-dimensional entanglement, as is, for instance, reflected in stronger violations of various measures of nonlocality which reveal the complexity of high-dimensional Hilbert spaces [4–7]. Also, from an applications perspective, it promises a larger channel capacity [8, 9] and improved security for quantum communication [10, 11]. There are several ways to implement high-dimensional two-photon entanglement. One can exploit the temporal [12], frequency [13], or spatial [14–18] degrees of freedom of the optical field. A promising way to implement high-dimensional two-photon entanglement is to use the orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) degree of freedom of light. Light beams that carry OAM have a helical wavefront that spirals around the optical axis during propagation [19]. The winding number m , which characterizes the OAM eigenmodes, can adopt any integer value between −∞ and ∞; since all coaxial OAM modes are orthogonal they can thus span a very high-dimensional Hilbert space.

Generation of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum entangled states

Eleonora Nagali, Fabio Sciarrino

Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of Bell's inequalities with the hybrid two photon system has been observed.

Engineering of Multi-Dimensional Entangled States of Photon Pairs Using Hyper-Entanglement

Xi‐Feng Ren, Guo‐Ping Guo, Jian Li +2 more

Multi-dimensional entangled states have been proven to be more powerful in some quantum information processes. Down-converted photons from spontaneous parametric down-conversion are used to engineer multi-dimensional entangled states. A kind of multi-degree multi-dimensional Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger states can also be generated. The hyper-entangled photons are entangled in energy-time, polarization and orbital angular momentum, which is proven to be useful to increase the dimension of systems and to investigate higher-dimensional entangled states.
