Abstract

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of two interacting point vortex rings in a Bose – Einstein condensate. The existence of an invariant manifold corresponding to vortex rings is proved. Equations of motion on this invariant manifold are obtained for an arbitrary number of rings from an arbitrary number of vortices. A detailed analysis is made of the case of two vortex rings each of which consists of two point vortices where all vortices have same topological charge. For this case, partial solutions are found and a complete bifurcation analysis is carried out. It is shown that, depending on the parameters of the Bose – Einstein condensate, there are three different types of bifurcation diagrams. For each type, typical phase portraits are presented.

Bifurcation Analysis of the Dynamics of Two Vortices in a Bose–Einstein Condensate. The Case of Intensities of Opposite Signs

S.V. Sokolov, Pavel Evgen'evich Ryabov

This paper is concerned with a system two point vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate enclosed in a trap. The Hamiltonian form of equations of motion is presented and its Liouville integrability is shown. A bifurcation diagram is constructed, analysis of bifurcations of Liouville tori is carried out for the case of opposite-signed vortices, and the types of critical motions are identified.

Bifurcation Diagram of the Two Vortices in a Bose–Einstein Condensate with Intensities of the Same Signs

S. V. Sokolov, Pavel Evgen'evich Ryabov

This paper deals with the problem of motion of a system of two point vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate enclosed in a cylindrical trap. Bifurcation diagram is analytically determined for the intensities of one sign and bifurcations of Liouville tori are investigated. We obtain explicit formulas for determining the type of critical trajectories, which allow us to investigate the stability of the obtained solutions.

Dynamics of interacting two vortex N-gons in BECs

Elizaveta Markovna Artemova, Alexander Alexandrovich Kilin

Equations governing the motion of vortex N-gons in a Bose-Einstein condensate enclosed in a harmonic trap are obtained. It is shown that these equations have two first integrals: the integral of energy and the integral of the moment. The reduction on the fixed level set of the integral of moment is carried out. The equilibrium positions of the system considered are found. Phase portraits of the system of two vortex N-gons, each of which consists of two vortices, are constructed.

A modified point-vortex model for the vortex dynamics in a two-dimensional superfluid Bose gas

Jiamei Kong, Rukuan Wu

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the vortices in the homogeneous two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate by considering the condensate density variation. It is shown that the condensate density variation plays an important role when two vortices are close together. By the time-dependent Lagrangian functional method and the numerical simulation, we study how the interaction strength of the vortices varies with the distance between two vortices with the same or different topological charges, and generalize the results for the vortex pairs to the multi-vortex case. The numerical simulations demonstrate the validity of our theory.

Vortex Excitations of Dirac Bose-Einstein Condensates

Joris Schaltegger, Alexander V. Balatsky

We explore vortices in non-equilibrium Dirac Bose-Einstein condensates (Dirac BEC) described by a stationary Dirac Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE). We find that the multi-component structure of Dirac equation enables the difference in phase winding of two condensates with respective phase winding number differing by one, $\ell_a - \ell_b = \pm 1$. We observe three classes of vortex states distinguished by their far-field behavior: A ring soliton on either of the two components in combination with a vortex on the other component, and, in the case of strong inter-component interactions, a vortex profile on both components. The latter are multiple core vortices due to the phase winding difference between the components. We also address the role of a Haldane gap on these vortices, which has a similar effect than inter-component by making the occupation on either sublattice more costly. We employ a numerical shooting method to reliably identify vortex solutions and use it to scan large parts of the phase space. We then use a classification algorithm on the integrated wavefunctions to establish a phase diagram of the different topological sectors.

Dynamics of quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate with two “holes”

V. P. Ruban

The dynamics of interacting quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous Bose–Einstein condensate, whose equilibrium density vanishes at two points of the plane with a possible presence of an immobile vortex with a few circulation quanta at each point, has been considered in a hydrodynamic approximation. A special class of density profiles has been chosen, so that it proves possible to calculate analytically the velocity field produced by point vortices. The equations of motion have been given in a noncanonical Hamiltonian form. The theory has been generalized to the case where the condensate forms a curved quasi-two-dimensional shell in the three-dimensional space.
