Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of motion of a system of two point vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate enclosed in a cylindrical trap. Bifurcation diagram is analytically determined for the intensities of one sign and bifurcations of Liouville tori are investigated. We obtain explicit formulas for determining the type of critical trajectories, which allow us to investigate the stability of the obtained solutions.

Bifurcation Analysis of the Dynamics of Two Vortices in a Bose–Einstein Condensate. The Case of Intensities of Opposite Signs

S.V. Sokolov, Pavel Evgen'evich Ryabov

This paper is concerned with a system two point vortices in a Bose–Einstein condensate enclosed in a trap. The Hamiltonian form of equations of motion is presented and its Liouville integrability is shown. A bifurcation diagram is constructed, analysis of bifurcations of Liouville tori is carried out for the case of opposite-signed vortices, and the types of critical motions are identified.

Dynamics of Two Vortex Rings in a Bose – Einstein Condensate

Elizaveta Markovna Artemova, Alexander Alexandrovich Kilin

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of two interacting point vortex rings in a Bose – Einstein condensate. The existence of an invariant manifold corresponding to vortex rings is proved. Equations of motion on this invariant manifold are obtained for an arbitrary number of rings from an arbitrary number of vortices. A detailed analysis is made of the case of two vortex rings each of which consists of two point vortices where all vortices have same topological charge. For this case, partial solutions are found and a complete bifurcation analysis is carried out. It is shown that, depending on the parameters of the Bose – Einstein condensate, there are three different types of bifurcation diagrams. For each type, typical phase portraits are presented.

Integrable case of two vortices in a perfect fluid in a cylindrical domain

S.V. Sokolov, Рамоданов Сергей Михайлович

This paper is concerned with a system of two vortex filaments in a Bose-Einstein condensate enclosed in a harmonic trap. Such a problem is a restriction for the more complicated case of a circular cylinder rigid body and two rectilinear vortex filaments. For these conditions we propose that rigid body has a infinitely big mass. Here we present the Hamiltonian form of equations of motion and explicitly show that system is integrable in Liouville sense. Some bifurcation diagram is constructed, and analysis of bifurcations of Liouville tori is carried out for the case of opposite-signed vortices.

Hamiltonian dynamics of two same-sign point vortices

Anderson V. Murray, Andrew J. Groszek, Pekko Kuopanportti +1 more

We have studied numerically the Hamiltonian dynamics of two same-sign point vortices in an effectively two-dimensional, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We have found in the phase space of the system an impenetrable wall that divides the dynamics into two distinct and exhaustive types. In the two-dimensional position-coordinate space, the first type corresponds to intersecting single-vortex orbits and the second type to orbits that have no points in common. The two types are also easily distinguished in the two-dimensional space spanned by the radial and angular velocities of the vortices: In the first type, both single-vortex orbits are the same simple loop in this two-dimensional space, whereas in the second type the two orbits constitute two nonintersecting loops. The phase-space-dividing wall is distinct from the bifurcation curve of rigidly rotating states found by Navarro et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 225301 (2013)].

A Method for the Dynamics of Vortices in a Bose-Einstein Condensate: Analytical Equations of the Trajectories of Phase Singularities

Sergi de María-García, Albert Ferrando, J. Alberto Conejero +2 more

We present a method to study the dynamics of a quasi-two dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate which initially contains several vortices at arbitrary locations. The method allows one to find the analytical solution for the dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate in a homogeneous medium and in a parabolic trap, for the ideal non-interacting case. Secondly, the method allows one to obtain algebraic equations for the trajectories of the position of phase singularities present in the initial condensate along with time (the vortex lines). With these equations, one can predict quantities of interest, such as the time at which a vortex and an antivortex contained in the initial condensate will merge. For the homogeneous case, this method was introduced in the context of photonics. Here, we adapt it to the context of Bose-Einstein condensates, and we extend it to the trapped case for the first time. Also, we offer numerical simulations in the non-linear case, for repulsive and attractive interactions. We use a numerical split-step simulation of the non-linear Gross-Pitaevskii equation to determine how these trajectories and quantities of interest are changed by the interactions. We illustrate the method with several simple cases of interest, both in the homogeneous and parabolically trapped systems.

Collapse of the metastable state in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate

Jae Gil Kim, Yoon-Hyuck Sean Choi, Eok Kyun Lee

The characteristic features of the collapse of the ground state in trapped one-component attractive Bose-Einstein condensates are studied by applying the catastrophe theory. From numerically obtained stable and unstable solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we derive the catastrophe function defining the stability of the stationary points on the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. The bifurcation diagram and the universal scaling laws stemming from the catastrophe function show quantitative agreement with the numerical results.
