Abstract

The role of Rydberg autoionizing states in interfering one- and two-photon ionization paths is theoretically investigated in atomic Ar. The angularly resolved photoionization cross sections for each individual path is provided. By varying the relative optical phase between the two pulses the phase difference between the two interfering paths is extracted. The retrieved phase difference and the photoelectron angular distributions exhibit a strong dependence on the photon energy in the vicinity of the resonant states. In contrast to previous results obtained in atomic Ne, the phase difference features a smooth dependence with photoelectron emission angle.

Complete determination of atomic parameters in two -photon ionization and study of quantum interference with two -color laser fields

Zhengmin Wang

We present our study on complete measurements of two-photon ionization in atomic rubidium. In this study we developed an effective technique to measure the angular distributions of photoelectrons. Through the measurements with this technique and using elliptically-polarized light we have successfully determined the atomic parameters—the relative cross sections for various ionization channels as well as the phase difference between s- and d-continuum waves. The measured phase differences are in excellent agreement with expected values over the entire range of photoelectron kinetic energy from 0 to 0.5 eV. The measured relative cross sections for ionization into S and D channels are also in good agreement with theoretical data. Both the relative cross sections and phase differences show a slow variation as a function of photoelectron energy. The ratios of cross sections of the two D channels are not in agreement with the expected value, suggesting fine structure effects. We also studied a quantum mechanical interference using two-color laser fields and observed the extremely asymmetric photoelectron angular distribution produced by interfering even- and odd-order photoionization processes in atomic rubidium as the optical phase was varied. We observed these effects with both perpendicularly and parallel-polarized fields components. It is worthy to note that the quantum interference observed with perpendicularly-polarized two-color fields is unique. Based on the analysis of measured angular distributions we derived the phase difference between even and odd continuum waves for the first time. The measured value of the phase difference is in good agreement with the calculated value from quantum defect theory.

Strong variation of the phase lag in the vicinity of autoionizing resonances

Rekishu Yamazaki, Daniel S. Elliott

We have observed the phase lag in the sinusoidal variation of the asymmetric photoelectron angular distributions into two ionization channels of atomic barium using an $\ensuremath{\omega}\text{\ensuremath{-}}2\ensuremath{\omega}$ excitation scheme. We excite atomic barium from the $6s6p\text{ }{^{1}P}_{1}$ intermediate state electron to an energy between the $5{d}_{3∕2}ϵ$ and the $5{d}_{5∕2}ϵ$ thresholds with concurrent one-photon and two-photon interactions. The left-right asymmetry of the photoelectron angular distributions for the two energy-resolved product states, $6{s}_{1∕2}ϵ$ and $5{d}_{3∕2}ϵ$, show sinusoidal modulation as a function of the relative phase of the $\ensuremath{\omega}\text{\ensuremath{-}}2\ensuremath{\omega}$ fields. The phase difference between these signals, or phase lag, varies rapidly with the laser frequency when the interaction is nearly resonant with autoionizing resonances in the continuum. An exceptionally large phase lag variation of over $2\ensuremath{\pi}$ was measured.

Path dependence in resonant multiphoton excitation to autoionizing states of barium

James S. Keller, John E. Hunter, R. Stephen Berry

We measure photoion spectra and angular distributions of photoelectrons from the two-color, two-photon resonant ionization of barium atoms in order to probe the effect of the photoionization pathway on autoionization processes. The (6s6p${)}^{1}$P${\mathrm{\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}}}_{1}$ and the (5d6p${)}^{1}$P${\mathrm{\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}}}_{1}$ states are used as intermediates in the photoexcitation of barium to energies in the range of a series of 5dnd autoionizing states. Dramatic differences in the profiles of autoionizing lines are observed for excitation pathways involving different intermediate states. Angular distributions of photoelectrons collected across the range of autoionizing resonances demonstrate strong variations that follow constraints imposed by the angular momentum of the autoionizing peaks and also suggest significant spin-orbit interactions in the photoionization step.

Observation of the Phase Lag in the Asymmetric Photoelectron Angular Distributions of Atomic Barium

Rekishu Yamazaki, Daniel S. Elliott

We have observed and measured the phase lag in the phase-dependent variation of the asymmetric photoelectron angular distribution of atomic barium. For these measurements, we photoionize the 6s6p(1)P(1) intermediate state of barium with concurrent one-photon and two-photon (omega-2omega) interactions. The laser interactions ionize the atoms in the vicinity of the series of autoionizing states converging upon the 5d(2)D(5/2) threshold. We study the variation of the phase lag as a function of the laser frequency. The variation shows strong correlation to the location of the autoionizing resonances, with full range exceeding 2pi, confirming the critical role of these resonances.

Polarization phenomena in bichromatic ionization of Ne and Ar induced by circularly polarized VUV femtosecond pulses

A N Grum-Grzhimailo, Грызлова Елена Владимировна, Maria M. Popova

Synopsis Interference effects resulting from direct single-photon and resonant two-photon ionization of neon and argon by bichromatic circularly polarized radiation were investigated in the framework of the perturbation theory. Analytical formulas are obtained for the differential cross section of the process in multielectron noble gas atoms. The possibility of coherent control of the photoelectron angular distribution and spin polarization will be discussed.

Photoelectron angular distributions and phase interference in alkali atoms

Yi-Yian Yin

In this thesis we report an experimental study of the interference between one- and two-photon ionization processes from the ground state of rubidium atom. This interference is observed by measuring the photoelectron angular distribution under the influence of fundamental and second harmonic laser fields. Externally controlling the relative phase and amplitude between these two laser fields, we obtained interference in the angular distribution patterns. This study represents the first observation of the phase interference in photoionization angular distributions. The photoelectron angular distributions resulting from the single-photon ionization of cesium and rubidium from its ground state to the continuum were measured. This is the first set of measurements of the single photon photoelectron angular distributions at a variety of energies in vicinity of the Cooper minimum from a single initial state of alkali metals. The results show a strong variation of asymmetry parameter $\beta$ from its nonrelativistic value of 2. Spin-orbit coupling displaces the minimum in the cross section for excitation to the $\rm \varepsilon P\sb{1/2}$ and $\rm \varepsilon P\sb{3/2}$ and results in a rapid variation of the angular distribution with photon energy in this region. Through the measurement of two-photon ionization angular distributions the quantum defects and spin-orbit coupling were investigated. These studies help us to understand the phase interference interaction, and the data in those studies would be used to analyze the interference processes.
