Unbiased Quantum Random-Number Generation by Use of Photon-Number-Resolving Detection up to 30 Photons

Miller Eaton, Amr Hossameldin, Christopher C. Gerry +3 more

We experimentally demonstrate an unbiased all-optical random number gen-erator using coherent light and photon-number-resolved detection of up to 30 photons. Our method requires no de-biasing algorithms and is robust to environmental noise and laser fluctuations.

Superconducting Nanostrip Photon-Number-Resolving Detector as an Unbiased Random Number Generator

Pasquale Ercolano, Mikkel Ejrnaes, Ciro Bruscino +8 more

Detectors capable of resolving the number of photons are essential in many applications, ranging from classic photonics to quantum optics and quantum communication. In particular, photon-number-resolving detectors based on arrays of superconducting nanostrips can offer a high detection efficiency, a low dark count rate and a recovery time of a few nanoseconds. In this work, we use a detector of this kind for the unbiased generation of random numbers by following two different methods based on the detection of photons. In the former, we exploit the property that the light is equally distributed on each strip of the entire detector, whereas in the latter we exploit the fact that, for a high average number of photons, the parity of the Poissonian distribution of the number of photons emitted by the laser tends to be zero. In addition, since these two methods are independent, it is possible to use them at the same time.

High-speed quantum-random number generation by continuous measurement of arrival time of photons

Qiurong Yan, Baosheng Zhao, Hua Zhang +2 more

We demonstrate a novel high speed and multi-bit optical quantum random number generator by continuously measuring arrival time of photons with a common starting point. To obtain the unbiased and post-processing free random bits, the measured photon arrival time is converted into the sum of integral multiple of a fixed period and a phase time. Theoretical and experimental results show that the phase time is an independent and uniform random variable. A random bit extraction method by encoding the phase time is proposed. An experimental setup has been built and the unbiased random bit generation rate could reach 128 Mb/s, with random bit generation efficiency of 8 bits per detected photon. The random numbers passed all tests in the statistical test suite.
