Abstract

Here we present a new fast two-bit quantum random number generator based on the intrinsic randomness of the quantum physical phenomenon of photon statistics of coherent light source. Two-bit random numbers were generated according to the number of detected photons in each light pulse by a photon-number-resolving detector. Poissonian photon statistics of the coherent light source guaranteed the complete randomness of the bit sequences. Multi-bit true random numbers were generated for the first time based on the multi-photon events from a coherent light source.

Quantum random-number generator based on a photon-number-resolving detector

Min Ren, E Wu, Yan Liang +3 more

We demonstrated a high-efficiency quantum random number generator which takes inherent advantage of the photon number distribution randomness of a coherent light source. This scheme was realized by comparing the photon flux of consecutive pulses with a photon number resolving detector. The random bit generation rate could reach $2.4$ MHz with a system clock of $6.0$ MHz, corresponding to a random bit generation efficiency as high as $40%$. The random number files passed all the stringent statistical tests.

Quantum Random Number Generation Based on Multi-photon Detection

Kanin Aungskunsiri, Sakdinan Jantarachote, Kruawan Wongpanya +3 more

We demonstrate quantum random number generation based on a photon-number detection scheme with the use of a silicon photomultiplier. We implement a time integral with detector response signals for resolving photon numbers, which are subsequently digitized into a stream of 4-bit sequences with a generation rate of 13.6 Mbit/s. Our generated random bits pass the statistical randomness validation according to the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-22. This scheme is implementable with inexpensive components, and the system can be miniaturized to the size of a plug-and-play portable cryptographic device.

Bias-free true random-number generator

Wei Wei, Hong Mei Guo

We propose what we believe to be a new approach to nondeterministic random-number generation. The randomness originated from the uncorrelated nature of consecutive laser pulses with Poissonian photon statistics and that of photon number detections is used to generate random bit, and the von Neumann correction method is used to extract the final random bit. This method is proved to be bias free in randomness generation, provided that the single photon detections are mutually independent. Further, it has the advantage in fast random bit generation, since no postprocessing is needed. A true random-number generator based on this method is realized, and its randomness is tested and guaranteed using three statistical test batteries.

Photon arrival time quantum random number generation

Michael A. Wayne, Evan R. Jeffrey, Gleb M. Akselrod +1 more

We present an efficient random number generator based on the randomness present in photon emission and detection. The interval between successive photons from a light source with Poissonian statistics is separated into individual time bins, which are then used to create several random bits per detection event. Using a single-photon counter and FPGA-based data processing allows for a cost-efficient and convenient implementation that outputs data at rates of roughly 40 Mbit s−1.

Quantum random number generator based on photonic emission in semiconductors

Mario Stipčević, B. Medved Rogina

We report upon the realization of a novel fast nondeterministic random number generator whose randomness relies on the intrinsic randomness of the quantum physical processes of photonic emission in semiconductors and subsequent detection by the photoelectric effect. Timing information of detected photons is used to generate binary random digits-bits. The bit extraction method based on the restartable clock method theoretically eliminates both bias and autocorrelation while reaching efficiency of almost 0.5 bits per random event. A prototype has been built and statistically tested.

Multi-bit optical quantum random number generator based on the distribution of single photon pulse amplitude of a photomultiplier tube

Yan Qiu-ron

This paper proposes and demonstrates an optical quantum random number generator based on distribution of single photon pulse amplitude of a photomultiplier tube. The light emitted from ultraviolet LED is attenuated into discrete single photon sequence. After these photons are detected by the photomultiplier tube, the single-photon pulses with random distribution are output.Digital values of peaks of these single-photon pulses are used as the entropy sources of random number generation. In order to reduce the bias of the raw extracted random number, the SHA-256 post processing method based on FPGA is proposed and implemented. When our designed quantum random number generator works at a counting rate of 500kc/s,7random bits can be extracted on average per detected photon, and a random number generation rate of 3.5Mbit/s is obtained. The random bit sequences are tested by random number test programs ENT and STS.The test results show that the generated random bit sequences fully meet the standards of true random numbers.
